Shadow Labyrinth might just pull off its oddball elevator pitch
At PAX East 2025, Digital Trends went hands-on with the upcoming game and chatted with Seigo Aizawa, producer at Bandai Namco, about Pac-Man's new look. Aizawa showed us how the oddball game is more true to Pac-Man's core tenets than it looks at first glance. It may be a gritty Metroidvania with intense boss fights, but this is still the same maze-navigating eat-em-up you've been playing for decades, albeit in a very different light.
In Shadow Labyrinth , players wake up in a strange world where everything is trying to kill them. The only thing aiding their survival is a Pac-Man-like creature that gives them abilities and guides them through a savage planet. Amazon's Secret Level episode starring Pac-Man serves as a prequel to Shadow Labyrinth , and watching it will give players a better understanding of what to expect.
'To expand our audience, we wanted to make something new,' Aizawa tells Digital Trends. 'We wanted to get people who never played a Pac-Man game to play [ Shadow Labyrinth ]. When we thought about the concept of the game, 'Dark Pac-Man' came up. When you think about a dark atmosphere and a maze concept, [the] Metroidvania [genre] matches it perfectly.'
Shadow Labyrinth is especially fast-paced for the genre. Every attack must be executed with a plan in mind. But that's not to say Shadow Labyrinth isn't a Pac-Man game at its heart still. There's still a maze for players to run through, you just won't see it from a bird's eye view. Instead, players navigate 2D environments and you have to figure out where they're going as they explore.
Pac-Man's tendency to eat everything in sight plays a role here too, though in much more sinister fashion. After players are done chopping up your enemies, they can perform an action that essentially turns you into a Pac-Man Kiju that lets them eat their foes to gain abilities. Aizawa revealed that this was by design, as the game needed three key pillars for which Pac-Man is known for: eating, mazes, and power ups.
That's not the only thing my Pac-Man companion can do. As I was making my way through mazes, I was presented with paths that had rails on them. The only way to cross them was to turn into that iconic yellow sphere from the arcade classic. The catch was that the rails were packed with all sorts of traps that were trying to kill me. If I wanted to make it through alive, I needed to evade them.
While the Shadow Labyrinth itself is a new location, it still connects to a familiar universe. Bandai Namco decided to toy around with the UGSF (Universal Gaming Simulation Framework), a narrative device that the company uses to connect many of its games. A clear example of this appeared towards the end of my demo. After defeating the main boss, I uncovered a Dig-Dug easter egg that played a bit of the game's music. Bandai Namco
Aizawa says that this is just one example of how all of the games are connected thanks to the UGSF. Shadow Labyrinth takes place in a distant future, whereas Dig Dug took place 3,000 years before this game. As players progress through the story, they'll find remnants of other beloved Bandai Namco properties. Sometimes these will be simple winks and nods to other games, and other times they'll play a bigger role in the story.
The overall gameplay doesn't disappoint based on what I've played so far. There's a clear sense of Metroidvania progression that gives players plenty of new abilities to unlock, changing their tool set. The boss fights are engaging clashes against larger than life monsters and the platforming almost feels like a game of its own. Every aspect of it is working for me so far, which is a pleasant surprise considering how left-field the pitch is.
Shadow Labyrinth is dark, edgy, and grim, but still very much a Pac-Man game at its core. As different as it is from anything else in the series history, I'm still having fun exploring mazes and eating enemies at the end of the day. Shadow Labyrinth is taking a big swing and hopes to capture a new audience with its latest iteration of Pac-Man. From what I played, Bandai Namco may just pull that off with something entirely new.
Shadow Labyrinth launches on July 18 for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2.

I was dead for 2 minutes and I didn't want to leave — what I saw on the other side was beyond belief
A woman who was pronounced dead for two minutes has revealed the shocking discovery of what she saw on 'the other side.' Nicole Meeuws was lifeless in a hospital bed when she supposedly felt 'pulled' from her body and entered a tunnel of light where she was met by 'blue-skinned' beings, she told NeedToKnow. The 49-year-old artist was rushed into emergency surgery after losing her baby, as complications from labor sent her in and out of consciousness. 7 Nicole photographed after passing over to 'the other side.' Jam Press/Nicole Meeuws 'I found myself passing through a tunnel of blue and white light, not a beam, but a corridor that felt alive,' she explained. Meeuws, from Greece, said that the light had a temperature and tone 'almost like music made of water' as she entered a glowing space with 'luminous' colors — silver, soft violets and deep radiant blues. 7 Nicole painting what she saw after being pronounced dead. Jam Press/Nicole Meeuws 'It didn't feel frightening; it felt like I was being called home,' she said. 'The chamber was vast, larger than any earthly structure, and everything pulsed gently like a heartbeat,' she said. 'And then I saw them.' She revealed that she was greeted by 'blue-skinned' beings with human faces — similar to the characters in 'Avatar.' 7 Nicole Meeuws painting her visions. Jam Press/Panagiotis Peikidis 'Two towering beings seated on marble-like thrones, shimmering with energy. Their eyes were large and indigo, filled with kindness and recognition,' she shared. 'They looked human, but had gentle gills on their cheeks. I remember seeing their fish-like tails, rather than legs, covered in scales.' 'They were both male and female intertwined and didn't speak in words – but I understood everything they had to tell me.' She didn't understand their language, but the Avatar-like figures allegedly made her feel at home and telepathically communicated with her that life is actually an illusion, and we start to live when we die. 7 Nicole Meeuws felt 'pulled' from her body and entered a tunnel of light where she was met by 'blue-skinned' beings. Jam Press/Nicole Meeuws She also said they told her that she wasn't meant to have children, and rather, she was given the gift to teach people about 'the other side.' 'I felt more known than I had ever felt in my life; I didn't want to leave,' she said. 'I understood this place, this feeling, and I truly believe it was the original home from which we all come from.' 'I learned that death is not an end, it's a return to our actual lives.' 7 Nicole with her husband, Christos, who is a specialized doctor. Jam Press/Nicole Meeuws Following the 2 minutes in which she was presumably dead, Meeuws was 'zapped' back into her body. When she awoke, her husband Christos, 65, tried to speak to her, but she responded in a high-pitched tone in an 'unfamiliar' language. 'It sounded like dolphin clicks. It continued for minutes, which left everyone around us stunned. But I couldn't stop it — it was coming through me, not from me,' Meeuws explained. 'My senses were heightened and I could hear emotion in people's voices as color. I returned completely different; almost reborn.' 7 A painting made by Nicole showing the Avatar-like faces she saw. Jam Press/Nicole Meeuws Meeuws hasn't had any near-death experiences since the incident, but she said she has visions of the blue-skinned beings often. She believed the creatures are non-alien creatures from the Apkallu interdimensional tribe, also referred to as Demigods, that allegedly have given civilization to mankind. According to Meeuws, the mission given to her by these blue beings is so spread the message that 'love is stronger than death.' 7 Nicole Meeuws entered a glowing space with 'luminous' colors. Jam Press/Nicole Meeuws 'Love will always win; it's where we came from. We're all one big family, regardless of boundaries, cultures, religion and politics. Everything that exists came from the same spark,' she said. 'The more we hold onto fear, hate and lies, the easier it is to control humanity.' 'To create heaven on Earth, we must spend each day spreading love. I'm no longer afraid of death because I know what's waiting for me on the other side. It was a beginning, not an end.'

Seismic Xbox Game Pass upgrade could change the way you game forever
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Quick Summary Xbox Cloud Gaming could soon receive a number of key enhancements to make it a much better service. There are also suggestions that it could be available outside of an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription too. Microsoft is reportedly working on several big upgrades to its Xbox Cloud Gaming service to make it run closer to playing games on local hardware. And that could include a bump in resolution and frame rates. Currently part of an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription, Xbox Cloud Gaming offers 100s of games that players can stream over a data connection to multiple devices. This includes phones, tablets, Smart TVs from Samsung and LG, and even Amazon Fire TV Sticks. As long as you have an Xbox controller or Bluetooth equivalent, you can play a whole host of big name games, as well as many you might not have heard of before. Some even come with touchscreen controls, for playing on an iPhone, iPad or Android device without a dedicated gamepad. Day one releases are available on the service too, even the likes of the recently released Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 +4, Doom: The Dark Ages, and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. While subscribers can also play many of their own purchased Xbox games through the cloud. In fact, it's a well-rounded, extremely accessible service that works well as an accompaniment to conventional console and PC gaming. It just isn't quite ready to replace them. That's where the upgrades come in. Renowned Xbox expert Jez Corden of Windows Central believes that Microsoft is currently working on next-gen technologies and features for Xbox Cloud Gaming to make it a more attractive rival to traditional gaming platforms. A reduction in latency He suggests that a further reduction in latency is key, with measures being taken to eliminate the lag between controller motion or button press and the action being shown on screen. One of those is to release a new Xbox Wireless Controller that connects directly to the a home network when playing cloud games, rather than needing to send control codes to a device, which are then sent on to a remote server. By cutting out the middle-man, so to speak, it'll help reduce latency. This is something Google attempted with its failed Stadia service, and Amazon achieves with its Luna gamepad. In addition, Corden claims that Microsoft is considering switching the hosted games to PC versions rather than Xbox. This could enable the games to be more scaleable in terms of settings, while servers could be faster and less hamstrung by console technology. When it comes to console exclusives, they could run through emulation. It could also allow the service to offer higher resolutions and frame rates. Xbox Cloud Gaming is currently locked to 1080p at up to 60 frames per second, whereas Nvidia's major rival, GeForce Now, offers an Ultimate tier with up to 4K and 240fps streaming (albeit not at the same time). This would be dependent on users' own network connections and an increase in bit rates, but it's doable – as Nvidia has proved. Xbox Cloud Gaming subscription The other route that Corden suggests Microsoft could go in is to launch new, cloud only payment plans. You can currently only subscribe to Xbox Cloud Gaming through Game Pass Ultimate, which doesn't really make much sense if all you want is to play games on a Fire TV Stick. In that case, you don't need a library of games to download onto an Xbox Series X/S or PC, nor many of the other benefits membership adds. GeForce Now has three tiers – Free, Performance, and Ultimate – with different levels of streaming quality and priority access. Microsoft could adopt similar in the future. Xbox Cloud Gaming is still just in public beta mode at present – it has been since launch – so enhancements and upgrades could come with a push to a final release model. Certainly, with non-gaming manufacturers like LG and Samsung adding the service to their TVs, there's a market for more casual gamers to enjoy the latest and greatest without needing dedicated hardware. Maybe if the changes are as seismic as hoped, some of the more dyed-in-the-wool gamers will consider it too.
