Luke Littler sent warning over playing darts tournament that 'levels people out'

Daily Mirror13-06-2025
Luke Littler will make his World Cup of Darts debut on Saturday as he looks to lead England to the title alongside Luke Humphries, but former winner Simon Whitlock has called for caution
Luke Littler has been handed words of caution by Simon Whitlock ahead of the teenager's World Cup of Darts debut. The Warrington youngster's rise in the darting sphere has been stellar, with him reaching a world final in 2024, but even he missed out on one competition last year.
In the World Cup of Darts, teams are determined via the PDC Order of Merit, and the top two players from each participating country qualify.

Twelve months ago, Luke Humphries and Michael Smith, both former world champions, outranked Littler and subsequently led England to their first triumph since 2016.

Littler, who is now a world title holder, has made the doubles tournament this time around and is slated to team up with Cool Hand in what appears to be a formidable pairing. However, 2022 champion Whitlock has issued a warning.
"I love the World Cup. I mean, it's pairs. It's something different," Whitlock said, speaking at the MODUS Super Series 24/7 on Pluto TV launch. "There's only one tournament in the PDC, the whole calendar [that is a pairs competition], and it's a great tournament.
"But it sort of levels people out. You're not just playing for yourself, you're playing for your partner and your country as well, which makes it unique from everything else, and I really do believe they should be playing more pairs tournaments."
While Whitlock, who defeated England's Smith and James Wade en route to the title three years ago, acknowledged the challenges of the format, he heaped praise on Littler's exceptional abilities, reports the Express.
"Luke Littler, he looks calm; he never looks flustered," Whitlock said. "I'm not being disrespectful, but he is an absolute freak of darts. He's absolutely brilliant, and he deserves all the wins he gets. He's just an incredible player."

Ahead of his World Cup debut, 18-year-old Littler expressed his excitement and admitted that many were confused why he was unable to participate in Frankfurt last year.
"I cannot wait," he said. "Last year, people were confused about the ranking system. Everyone was asking why I wasn't in the World Cup, and I had to explain that I'd just started my career. But now, with the major ranking money contributing to the rankings, it's a different story."
Humphries has also commented on the duo's prospects, acknowledging that, due to the format, he will let the prolific scorer Littler throw first.
"I will probably put him first," Humphries told Sky Sports. "He is definitely the best scorer in the world. That's not a lie, it's obvious. So, you're going to put your strengths forward. You put him first, he is probably better at going for the bullseye than I am, getting the throws.
"Only if he's comfortable with it. If not, I'll go first but I played the anchor role last year. I felt really good going second, so maybe that is my role for this year as well."
As England retains the No. 1 seed for the 2025 renewal thanks to their pairing ranking the highest on the PDC circuit, Littler and Humphries will team up for the first time in the last 16 on Saturday, June 14.

Brad Pitt and George Russell's awkward incident before gatecrashed F1 interview

George Russell has opened up on a particularly awkward first encounter with Brad Pitt, before the Formula 1 driver gatecrashed one of the Hollywood titan's interviews at a swanky premiere George Russell has explained that he had quite an awkward first encounter with Brad Pitt, despite the two seeming like best friends during a recent interview. Pitt has spent a number of years getting to know the ins and outs of Formula 1, as well as seeking guidance from some of the sport's biggest stars as he filmed a new movie on the sport which landed in cinemas last month. ‌ He initially attended the US Grand Prix in Texas back in 2022 as a guest with Mercedes, when he first met esteemed driver Russell. ‌ Reflecting on the incident when asked if he has ever been left starstruck by a celebrity, Russell explained: "Starstruck maybe is pushing it a little bit, but the first time I ever saw Brad Pitt I wanted to act quite cool so I didn't want to take a photo with him as everyone else was. "So I pretended to be on the phone and sort of took the photo on the side of my phone. I've still got it on my phone now and I wanted to show him in Austin because we had a chat but it slipped my mind so next time." However, then the two met at the premiere of F1: The Movie last month in New York City, Russell wasn't quite as reserved. Pitt was being interviewed by Sky Sports when he spotted Russell approaching, before he said: "Hold on... what a weekend, dude." Alluding to the Canadian Grand Prix which Russell won, he added: "What a great race. Dude, it was so fun... it was so fun to watch. Dude, real pleasure. We'll talk later." All smiles, Russell exchanged a firm handshake and a swift hug with Pitt before he replied: "We've got the matching salmon shirt," referencing their similar fashion choices. To which, Pitt playfully added: "You texted. You said pink and I said pink? I said okay." ‌ With one win and five podiums to his name for 2025 thus far, Russell will hope to bridge the gap on Drivers' Championship leader Max Verstappen of Red Bull as the British Grand Prix at Silverstone on Sunday. Russell trails Verstappen by just 70 points with 13 races on the F1 calendar remaining at present. And given he started the British GP in fourth on the grid behind the RB star and McLaren duo Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris, he has given himself a fighting chance to reign supreme at Silverstone and slim Verstappen's overall lead. It comes as the Express reports Russell has played down any rumours of him parting ways with Mercedes for 2026, as Verstappen has been linked with a move to the team. The 27-year-old is out of contract with his current side at the end of this season, but he believes he will secure a new deal ahead of the new year. ‌ He told BBC Sport: "The likelihood I'm not at Mercedes next year, I think, is exceptionally low," adding: "I want to continue with Mercedes into the future. The fact is, Toto [Wolff] has never let me down. He's always given me his word, but he's also got to do what's right for his team, which includes me. "But it also includes the thousands of people who work for Mercedes. For me, it's nothing to worry about because I don't think I'll be going anywhere. And whoever my team-mate will be, it doesn't concern me either. I know where their loyalty lies. It doesn't need to be public. "It doesn't need to be broadcast to everybody. I feel I'm performing better than ever. And it's as simple as that really. Performance speaks for everything."

USA Olympic hero opens up on PTSD after suffering gruesome injuries in traumatic crash

Olympic hero Mikaela Shiffrin has opened up on the traumatic injuries she sustained during her horror crash last year that has left her suffering with PTSD even months later. The Team USA skier, 30, had to be stretchered off the slopes in Vermont after doing a flip and careening into the protective barriers during the Killington Cup on November 30, 2024. Shiffrin, who was chasing her 100th World Cup win, had been leading before she lost control near the finish line, slid into a gate, flipped head over skis, and collided with another gate before stopping in protective fencing. She suffered a five-centimeter puncture wound to her hip area, which she has now revealed narrowly avoided her colon by one millimeter. But the skiing star admitted the crash took more than a physical toll, as she detailed the mental health struggles she's had to endure over the past seven months. 'It's just been a process to recover from that physically, and mentally, more-so than I maybe expected,' Shiffrin told People. 'I was having a lot of actual PTSD symptoms.' *WARNING - GRAPHIC CONTENT BELOW* Shiffrin, 30, took a scary fall during her second Giant Slalom run at the Women's World Cup She opened up on the mental health woes, revealing the symptoms included 'flashbacks' and 'intrusive thoughts that were pretty challenging,' especially as she prepared for her return to the slopes in January. Shiffrin previously explained that she had been 'impaled' during the scary incident when she shared a snap of her bruised hips and pelvis, and even a video of the hole in her side as it was tended to by a nurse at the hospital, with her followers in December. However, even months later, Shiffrin admitted that she still isn't entirely certain how the crash occurred. 'That's the million-dollar question,' she told People. 'I crashed into a gate, and we think that maybe it was either impact or a portion of some part of the gate somehow managed to create the effect of a stab wound and it went right in here.' When the incident occurred, Shiffrin was leading after the first run of the GS and charging after her 100th World Cup win. She was within sight of the finish line, five gates onto Killington's steep finish pitch, when she lost the grip on her outside ski. She hit a gate and did a somersault before sliding into another gate. The fencing slowed her momentum as she came to an abrupt stop. Shiffrin stayed down on the edge of the course for quite some time as the ski patrol attended to her. She was taken off the hill on a sled and waved to the cheering crowd. The American has not suffered as many devastating injuries as many ski racers have. In her 14-year career, she has only had to rehab two injuries that happened on the hill: a torn medial collateral ligament and bone bruising in her right knee in December 2015 and a sprained MCL and tibiofibular ligament in her left knee after a downhill crash in January 2024. Neither knee injury required surgery and both times Shiffrin was back to racing within two months. Shiffrin went on to secure her historic 100th World Cup win on the slopes of Sestriere in February following her comeback. She took that tally to 101 in March when she clinched another victory at the Sun Valley Finals. To date, she has earned five overall World Cup titles, two Olympic gold medals - along with a silver - and seven world championships.
