Justin Wilcox still frustrated by Cal football's close losses: ‘Those are difficult'

In putting together a 6-7 record for the second consecutive season last year, Cal went 2-5 in games decided by one score. The Bears endured one particularly painful stretch in which they lost four straight games by a combined nine points.
On Tuesday, when a reporter at the ACC Football Kickoff event in Charlotte, N.C., asked Cal head coach Justin Wilcox about the Bears' struggles in tight games in 2024 and how they plan to remedy that issue in '25, Wilcox had a ready response.
'You didn't need to remind me, but I know the stat, yeah,' said Wilcox, who's entering his ninth season leading the Bears. 'Those are difficult, frustrating losses. We had plenty of opportunities to win those games.
'I wish it was as simple as, well, we need to do this one drill or address this one position or fix this one problem. It's not that simple.'
Wilcox then listed several components, from coaching and schematics to class schedules and admissions to 'support from every level of our institution. … I could name 50 things that can help us.'
The Bears will need help from either new players or ones who haven't had major roles in their time at Cal.
From last season, the Bears lost their starting quarterback (Fernando Mendoza, transferred to Indiana), top two running backs (Jaivian Thomas, transferred to UCLA; Jaydn Ott, transferred to Oklahoma), top wide receiver Nyziah Hunter (transferred to Nebraska), top tight end (Jack Endries, transferred to Texas), top tackler (Teddye Buchanan, fourth-round pick by Baltimore) and top interceptor (Nohl Williams, third-round pick by Kansas City).
One man expected to provide a lot of help to Wilcox and the entire team is Ron Rivera, the former Cal and Chicago Bears linebacker and longtime NFL head coach who was named the football program's general manager in March.
Wilcox said he and Rivera 'get to talk about anything and everything that has to do with Cal football. … He's a Cal Bear through and through, and he will tell you that. He will carry that flag.'
Who will carry the flag as Cal's starting quarterback for its opener at Oregon State on Aug. 30 remains uncertain. The competition centers on Devin Brown, who spent the past three seasons as a backup at Ohio State, and heralded freshman Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele, the left-hander from Hawaii who committed to Cal but signed with Oregon, then quickly transferred from Eugene to Berkeley.
Redshirt freshman EJ Caminong is also in the mix, Wilcox said, but the fact that Cal brought Brown and Sagapolutele to Charlotte would lead you to believe they're the top two candidates.
'The history of the quarterback position at Cal is long with Aaron Rodgers and Jared Goff,' Brown said. 'The list goes on and on.'
Brown then went on about making the transition from the Buckeyes to the Bears.
'The biggest thing was building relationships on and off the field,' Brown said. 'The O-line had to be able to trust that they could be my friend off the field. They're not going to want to block for somebody that they don't like, right?'
This will be the third straight year in which the Bears begin preseason camp with their starting QB uncertain. In 2023, Sam Jackson V and Ben Finley were the top candidates. They alternated as starters for the first five games before Mendoza took the job. Last year, Mendoza held off Chandler Rogers to remain QB1.
'We feel like this team at each position is probably as competitive or more competitive than any team we've had in our tenure there, so that's a good thing,' Wilcox said. 'The goal is to bring in as many good players as we possibly can who fit us, who fit Cal, and let the competition sort the depth chart out.'
Briefly: Cal also brought defensive lineman Aidan Keanaaina and linebacker Cade Uluave to Charlotte. In an interview on the ACC Network, Wilcox hinted that Uluave might get playing time beyond his duties on defense. Uluave was both a linebacker and running back at Mountain Ridge High in Utah and he returned four kickoffs. … Brown wore No. 33, not the typical quarterback number, at OSU as a tribute to Pro Football Hall of Fame QB Sammy Baugh. Brown is wearing No. 13 at Cal as running back Dean-Taylor Chapman has No. 33. Brown jokingly said that Chapman 'is being a little stingy, but I wanted (No. 33), so we'll see what happens.'

30 Most Important Bears of 2025: Dennis Allen (No. 4)

The Chicago Bears are gearing up for an exciting 2025 NFL season, which features some new faces within the organization poised to get the franchise back to its winning ways. That starts with the hiring of Ben Johnson as head coach, as well as overhauling the interior offensive line, adding pieces on defense and a potenital impactful rookie draft class. Every day from now right up through training camp, we're counting down our 30 Most Important Bears for the 2025 season. We'll recap their 2024 season, look ahead to 2025 and tackle the biggest question facing them this year. Next up at No. 4 is defensive coordinator Dennis Allen, the first coach to make an appearance on the list, who is tasked with getting the most out of a veteran defense. Background Position: Defensive coordinator Age: 52 Experience: 29 years 2025 cap hit: N/A 2024 recap Allen's 2024 season was one to forget for the veteran coach. He entered his third season as the head coach for the New Orleans Saints, and the team seemed to be turning the corner after a 9-8 year in 2023 that almost resulted in a division title. New Orleans had a dependable veteran quarterback in Derek Carr and some talented playmakers with running back Alvin Kamara and wide receiver Chris Olave, but Allen couldn't bring his team to have sustained success. After a 2-7 start to the 2024 season, the Saints fired Allen and turned their attention towards the future. It was Allen's second head coaching stint after spending three and a half years with the (then) Oakland Raiders. 2025 outlook Despite his shortcomings as a head coach, Allen was one of the more highly regarded defensive minds on the market. Prior to taking over for Sean Payton as the Saints head coach, Allen was an excellent defensive coordinator. He got the most out of a number of Pro Bowl players and helped develop stars such as Trey Hendrickson and Marshon Lattimore. The Bears saw the potential to pair Allen with new head coach Ben Johnson to give him a veteran presence to work with, while also providing the defense with a proven coach who can get the most out of the unit. Big question: What will the defense look like under Allen? For the last few seasons, the Bears deployed a relatively standard 4-3 defense under former head coach Matt Eberflus with varying degrees of success. With Allen now leading the group, what exactly will be different? We know Allen prefers to work with bigger defensive linemen and could opt to move players around, such as Dayo Odeyingbo and Gervon Dexter. At linebacker, the Bears may be swapping linebackers TJ Edwards and Tremaine Edmunds to mix things up and disguise coverages, and the secondary will likely feature more man coverage with Jaylon Johnson shadowing top receivers instead of sticking at one spot. Through a few days of camp, the Bears offense is already feeling Allen's defense and what they can do. Hopefully opposing teams will have a similar experience. 30 Most Important Bears of 2025

Panthers 2025 training camp tracker: Top takeaways and observations from Day 4

After cooling down in a walkthrough on Friday, the Carolina Panthers got back to some real on-field action this morning. Here are the top takeaways and observations from Saturday's session of training camp . . . Derrick Brown is getting there Defensive lineman Derrick Brown was absent from the few first days of camp due to personal reasons. Turns out, the personal reason was the birth of his fourth child. Now that he's back, Brown is ready to take on new life for 2025 after sustaining a season-ending knee injury in 2024. He was asked if he's close to 100 percent yet. "I feel like it. Gimme a few weeks, I feel like it," Brown replied. "Right now, they got a great plan in place, just gettin' back in shape. Being able to transition back into being able to play the plays I've played before and be there for the team. I expressed my opinion to them and they've been nothing but compliant on when it came to that." Head coach Dave Canales also offered an outlook on Brown. "We're gonna just kinda ramp him up each day and just kinda give him a little bit more, dose him a little bit higher," Canales told reporters. "He's gotta be ready to play Week 1, so we'll continue to grow the capacity in practice as we go." Hunting down a spot Canales also talked about veteran wideout Hunter Renfrow, who had himself quite a day on the practice field. He said that the former Pro Bowler has looked "great," then explained why. "It's just the Hunter Renfrow I remember," Canales stated. "He looks healthy. I think everyone who's watched football over the last four or five years remembers what he looks like, and he's really playing in top form right now. I'm really excited to have him here and to have his family, which is right down the road here after this practice, just to be able to connect with him. And it's a great story that's unfolding right before our eyes." Renfrow missed the 2024 season due to ulcerative colitis. He signed with Carolina shortly following the 2025 NFL draft. A bigger role for a slimmer Sanders Tight end Ja'Tavion Sanders said he's feeling more confident as a pro, both on and off the field, entering Year No. 2. Part of that confidence stems from some newfound speed, thanks to his offseason weight loss. "I was probably like 255 [pounds] last year, like 238 right now," Sanders stated. "So definitely moving faster. Being able to get in and out my breaks better as well." Sanders will have to step up this summer in the absence of starter Tommy Tremble, who is currently on the active/physically unable to perform list as he recovers from back surgery. Panthers DL Derrick Brown is asked if he's at 100 percent yet

Carolina Panthers defensive lineman Derrick Brown is getting there. After welcoming his fourth child into the world this past week, Brown returned to the Panthers on Saturday to start his 2025 training camp journey. The sixth-year veteran, who missed nearly the entirety of the 2024 campaign due to a knee injury, was asked if he's feeling at 100 percent yet. "I feel like it. Gimme a few weeks, I feel like it," Brown replied. "Right now, they got a great plan in place, just gettin' back in shape. Being able to transition back into being able to play the plays I've played before and be there for the team. I expressed my opinion to them and they've been nothing but compliant on when it came to that." Brown went down after Carolina's regular-season opener in New Orleans, when testing revealed a torn meniscus. The Panthers then placed the Pro Bowler on injured reserve, causing him to miss 16 of their 17 games. The defense didn't hold up well in his absence. The Panthers ended up allowing the most rushing yards per game (179.8) as well as the most points ever in a single season. But Brown isn't looking back. "I'm not gonna really touch about last year. It's in the past," he said of 2024. "My wife may not like me being at home. All I did was fuss and cuss at the TV. But that's all I say about that." Hopefully for Brown, his wife and their third baby girl, he won't be able to fuss and cuss at home this season. Follow @ThePanthersWire on Twitter/X for more Panthers content.
