[WASHINGTON] Goldman Sachs Group said Rishi Sunak, the former UK prime minister, has rejoined the firm as a senior adviser.
Sunak, who served as prime minister from October 2022 to July 2024, will work with leaders across New York-based Goldman to advise clients globally on a range of topics, 'sharing his unique perspectives and insights on the macroeconomic and geopolitical landscape,' chief executive officer David Solomon said in a statement on Tuesday (Jul 8).
Before his time as prime minister, Sunak was chancellor of the exchequer from February 2020 to July 2022, and previously served as chief secretary to the Treasury and parliamentary under-secretary of state at the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government. He started his career in politics as a Member of Parliament in 2015.
After leading the Conservative Party to its worst-ever defeat in last year's general election, Sunak still serves as an MP for the constituency of Richmond and Northallerton in northern England. During the election campaign, he vowed to remain an MP for the full duration of the next Parliament, regardless of the outcome of the vote. His successor, Labour's Keir Starmer, can call the next general election as late as mid-2029.
Sunak worked at Goldman first as a summer intern in investment banking, in 2000, and then as an analyst, from 2001 to 2004. He later co-founded an investment firm working with companies internationally. BLOOMBERG

Libya's eastern-based government bars entry of EU migration commissioner, three ministers

REUTERS/Johanna Geron/File Photo TRIPOLI - The European Union migration commissioner and ministers from Italy, Malta and Greece were denied entry to the eastern part of divided Libya on Tuesday as they had disregarded "Libyan national sovereignty", the Benghazi-based government said. The delegation had arrived to attend a meeting with the parallel government of Osama Hamad, allied to military commander Khalifa Haftar who controls the east and large areas of southern Libya, shortly after a meeting with the rival, internationally recognised government that controls the west of Libya. The delegation included EU Internal Affairs and Migration Commissioner Magnus Brunner, Greek Migration and Asylum minister Thanos Plevris, Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi and Maltese Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri. The Benghazi-based government said the visit was cancelled upon the delegation's arrival at Benghazi airport whereupon the ministers were declared persona non grata and told to leave Libyan territory immediately. Members of the European delegation did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for comment. The Hamad government had said on Monday all foreign visitors and diplomatic missions should not come to Libya and move inside the country without its prior permission. Earlier in the day the EU delegation had met in Tripoli with the U.N.-recognised government of Abdulhamid Dbiebah to discuss the migration crisis before flying to Benghazi. Libya has become a transit route for migrants fleeing conflict and poverty to Europe across the Mediterranean since the fall in 2011 of dictator Muammar Gaddafi to a NATO-backed uprising. Factional conflict has split the country since 2014. Dbeibah said during the meeting he had tasked his interior ministry with developing a national plan to tackle migration "based on practical cooperation with partners and reflecting a clear political will to build sustainable solutions". Former British PM Rishi Sunak joins Goldman Sachs as adviser

Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox Mr Rishi Sunak was Britain's prime minister between October 2022 and July 2024. LONDON - Former UK Conservative Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has joined investment bank Goldman Sachs as a senior adviser, the company said in a statement on July 8. Mr Sunak, who was prime minister between October 2022 and July 2024, has returned to the bank where he began his career. 'I am excited to welcome Rishi back to Goldman Sachs in his new capacity as a Senior Adviser,' said Goldman Sachs chairman and chief executive David Solomon. He will advise clients 'on the macroeconomic and geopolitical landscape', Mr Solomon added. Mr Sunak was the third UK prime minister to take office in 2022, following Ms Liz Truss' rapid demise and Mr Boris Johnson's resignation before that. After he took office, Mr Sunak faced criticism from political opponents over his vast family wealth and past career in investment funds, with some arguing that he was out of touch with the general population during a rampant cost-of-living crisis. The Conservatives suffered a landslide defeat to Labour in July 2024, ending 14 years in power. AFP Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed.
