Save the date. Here's when Buc-ee's in South Mississippi is scheduled to open
'We are currently set to open in Harrison County, MS on June 9,' the Buc-ee's media department told the Sun Herald.
More details will be announced.
The $50 million travel center, known for its Beaver nuggets, hot brisket and the cleanest restrooms on the road, is along I-10 at Menge Avenue, exit 24. This is the first Buc-ee's in Mississippi.
Groundbreaking for the 74,000 square foot gas station and convenience and gift store — one of the biggest in the country — was in September 2023. The goal was to open in Spring 2025.
Buc-ee's founder Arch 'Beaver' Aplin III opened his first Buc-ee's travel center on I-10 in Texas 41 years ago in 1982. Now there are 50 locations in the U.S.
Crowds of people also lined up on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday for a job fair to fill more than 200 positions at the new Buc-ee's.
Mississippi had more applicants for jobs than any of the job fairs the company has held over the past several years, said Josh Smith, Buc-ee's director of operations for the Southeast. Full-time jobs typically pay $18-$24 an hour plus full benefits.

Customers to get mobile network boost in major 5G rollout
Great Malvern will get a mobile network boost as one of the latest areas to join EE's 5G standalone network. In a major rollout covering more than 34 million people the advanced mobile technology will reach commuter towns, regional hubs, and smaller communities facing mobile pressure due to growing populations, higher data usage, and hybrid working. By the end of August, EE's 5G standalone network will be accessible to more than half of the UK population, including major cities, tourist hotspots, and entertainment venues, making it the UK's largest 5G standalone network less than a year after its launch. EE aims to extend 5G standalone availability to more than 41 million people by spring 2026. In recent weeks, several towns and cities across the UK have seen their mobile connectivity enhanced, with EE activating 5G standalone in locations such as Carlisle, Chesterfield, and York. In the next month, customers in Great Malvern - one of 38 locations - will benefit from improved network performance. EE has also introduced its Voice over 5G standalone (Vo5G) feature for iOS and Android users with compatible devices, allowing voice calls in more areas with quicker setup times, enhancing connectivity. 5G standalone is designed to unleash the full potential of 5G, offering smoother livestreaming, faster loading and upload speeds, better indoor connectivity, and improved video calls and mobile gaming, said EE. The network can deliver up to 100 times more capacity than 4G, making it adept at handling multiple devices simultaneously, ensuring reliable mobile internet even in busy locations. Building a nationwide 5G standalone network is projected to significantly boost the UK economy, unlocking up to £230 billion in benefits and productivity enhancements. "5G standalone on EE makes your experience smoother, faster, and more secure," said Greg McCall, chief networks officer at BT Group. To access 5G standalone, customers need to be in a coverage area, have a compatible device, and an EE 5GSA-ready SIM card or eSIM as part of their plan. This technology is available to all new and upgrading customers on any EE pay monthly handset plan.

Pueblo mayor pitches sales tax increase, changes to half-cent criteria for 2025 ballot
Pueblo Mayor Heather Graham advocated for a grocery tax several months ago, but she acknowledged during a July 21 Pueblo City Council work session that the proposal to generate more revenue has not been popular with city voters. Instead of a grocery tax, Graham is now advocating for a ballot initiative that would increase the city sales and use tax rate from 3.7% to 4.7%. The city estimates a 1% sales tax increase would generate over $26 million annually — more than twice the estimated revenue of a grocery tax. Funds generated by a sales tax increase would alleviate a multi-million dollar budget shortfall while funding city programs, infrastructure maintenance, new amenities, pools, public safety, roads, and "quality of life services," according to a July 21 presentation by Graham and City Attorney Carla Sikes. The sales and use tax rate increase was proposed with another ballot initiative to change the city's half-cent sales tax criteria ordinance, which Graham said could help bring new amenities like a Buc-ees, Costco, or aquatic center to Pueblo. The updated criteria ordinance would add economic catalyst projects, projects to prevent economic leakage, and place-making projects to the list of initiatives eligible for funding through the city's half-cent sales tax. According to Graham and Sikes' presentation, economic catalyst projects are projects that substantially increase city sales tax revenue from "outside dollars"; projects that prevent economic leakage are those that attract businesses that city residents currently leave town to patronize; and place-making projects are those that "improve quality of life" while also bringing in revenue from outside the community. Pueblo City Council previously had the opportunity to enact changes to the criteria ordinance without approval of a ballot initiative on June 23, but rejected it in a 4-3 vote. Dennis Flores, Roger Gomez, Joe Latino and Regina Maestri were the four Pueblo City Council members who voted against changing the half-cent sales tax criteria. "We heard from PEDCO (the Pueblo Economic Development Corporation), our economic development partners, that the criteria ordinance was being changed a little bit too much," Graham told council members. "You wanted to see it go to the vote of the people, so here it is." If approved by city council, the 1% sales tax increase and changes to the half-cent sales tax criteria are scheduled to be on the November 4, 2025, ballot. Council's next regular meeting is on July 28. The Slab reopens: 'The Slab' is back. Buc-ee's discussed opening its westernmost location yet
Buc-ee's has explored the possibility of expanding to Idaho in a move that would give the Texas-based travel center its westernmost location. City officials in Meridian, Idaho met with Buc-ee's representatives on June 12 to discuss the potential of opening a travel center in the city, Meridian Economic Development Administrator Curtis Calder told USA TODAY. However, Buc-ee's has not submitted an application for the project. Though plans for an Idaho Buc-ee's are still hypothetical, Buc-ee's fans online are already eager for the travel center to hit their state. In a heartfelt TikTok video posted on July 9, a woman is told Buc-ee's may expand to Idaho in which she covers her mouth in disbelief. Buc-ee's did not wish to comment when contacted by USA TODAY on Friday, July 18. What's so great about Buc-ee's? Fans love the food, gas pumps, mascot, sparkling bathrooms Buc-ee's continues to expand national footprint Buc-ee's, a travel center known for its long-line of gas pumps, large restrooms and beaver-themed merchandise, was established in Texas by Arch "Beaver" Aplin III in 1982, per the Buc-ee's website. Over the past 40-plus years, Aplin has lead the opening of more than 50 locations, which started in Texas and then began to branch throughout the South, Midwest and now are creeping to the West. An expansion into Idaho would mark the chain's westernmost location, which is currently positioned in Berthoud, Colorado. Shoppers recently celebrated the grand opening of Virginia's first Buc-ee's location, which opened its doors in Mount Crawford on June 30. That location opened just one day before another new store in in Brunswick, on Georgia's southeast coast.
