Bengal focuses on food processing, horticulture to boost investment
Speaking at an Assocham-organised conclave, Food Processing Industries and Horticulture Minister Arup Roy said the state is focusing on modernising horticulture with advanced planting materials, high-yielding seeds, model nurseries, organic farming, post-harvest management, cold chain infrastructure, and promoting protected cultivation.
Kolkata, Jul 15 (PTI) West Bengal is ramping up efforts to boost its food processing and horticulture sectors through a series of initiatives aimed at attracting investment and modernising farming practices, a state minister said on Tuesday.
He added that the area under maize cultivation will be expanded by 60,000 hectares over the next three years to meet rising demand for animal, poultry and fish feed.
Roy also highlighted the importance of empowering women in agriculture, noting that they make up 70 per cent of the sector's workforce in the state.
Highlighting West Bengal's potential, Smaraki Mahapatra, department secretary, said the state produces about 163 lakh tonnes of vegetables and 40 lakh tonnes of fruits annually, with significant surpluses that can be tapped for exports through investments in cold chains and logistics.
Mahapatra said that the government is supporting tissue culture for crops such as banana, pineapple, blueberry and ginger and sees strong investment opportunities in value addition and post-harvest infrastructure.
'In FY25, 24,213 units in the food processing sector were set up in the state. A partnership between government, farmers, FPOs and entrepreneurs is key to unlocking the sector's full potential,' the officer said.
West Bengal's unique geography, stretching from the Himalayas to the coast, makes it ideal for diverse agricultural activities, including the cultivation of medicinal plants with potential in Ayurvedic treatments, Mahapatra added. PTI BSM NN

Herbal rush: Manipur startups venture beyond caffeinated drinks
Imphal: Aiming to present tea lovers an alternative to caffeine-based beverages, a number of young Manipur entrepreneurs are experimenting with indigenously grown plants to produce flavoured herbal drinks. Sumac berries, gooseberries and banana peels are among the ingredients that go into the making of these unconventional beverages. For Elizabeth Yambem, the founder of 'Dwellers Teas', the longingness for home and the desire to reconnect with childhood memories prompted her to launch her own brand of beverages. "We produce more than 10 varieties of herbal tea and employ 20 women at our Uripok manufacturing unit in Imphal West district. Our products are sold outside the state, too," Yambem told PTI. She said her company procures locally grown indigenous plants cultivated by farmers from various villages and hill districts, including Phayeng in Imphal West and Ukhrul. "I wanted to relive the childhood memories of Sumac berries, gooseberries, the vibrant Red Roselle, and the bittersweet Nong-mang-kha (a traditional medicinal plant) lovingly brewed by our elders in a way that could suit the changing times," she said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy the Dip: Top 5 Dividend Stocks with Growth Potential Seeking Alpha Read More Undo "We started researching for locally grown ingredients, many of which had medicinal properties, in 2016 and launched the company in 2017 in Guwahati. We relocated to Imphal in 2018," Yambem said. Yambem is not alone in the growing number of young entrepreneurs experimenting with unique ingredients to come up with herbal beverages in the northeastern state. Selina Mutum, the founder of 'Nongmadol Beverage', focuses on producing drinks with banana and pineapple peels to which spices are added for extra flavour. "In my locality, I had seen some manufacturing units producing banana chips but wasting the peels. I wanted to promote a sustainable way to use those unused peels as well as bring a new flavour-based beverage that is purely herbal," Mutum told PTI. "We formally launched the product in Jan 2024 at our unit in Heingang in Imphal East district. We have a team of six dedicated women," she said. She, however, said operations are occasionally impacted as packaging materials from outside the state do not arrive on time, due to the crisis caused by the ethnic conflict in Manipur. Yambem and Mutum's companies produce around 500-700 boxes of herbal beverages per month. While the herbal drinks of 'Dwellers Teas' start from Rs 50 a packet, the prices of 'Nongmadol Beverage' range from Rs 50 to Rs 200 per packet. PTI

Trip to Dubai, Spain has opened new avenues for investment, cultural ties: CM Yadav
'The Government of India has declared 2026 as the India-Spain Dual Year to celebrate cultural ties, tourism and cooperation in Artificial Intelligence. In this context, teams from Madhya Pradesh will be sent to Spain and delegations from Spain will be invited to the state to strengthen cultural bonds,' he said. Speaking to reporters after returning from the trip, Yadav said it helped position MP as an investment-friendly state on the global stage. Bhopal, Jul 20 (PTI) Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Sunday said that his weeklong tour to Dubai and Spain, which he termed a 'huge success', has opened new avenues in abundance for investment and cultural exchange. The chief minister also praised Spain's Flamenco dance and said it has similarities to Indian folk traditions. 'People there also say it might have originated from India,' he said, adding that the tour has opened new avenues for investment and cultural exchange. According to a government release issued earlier, Yadav had said that the warmth he received from the Indian diaspora in Barcelona made him feel as though he was in his hometown Ujjain. Prior to this visit, the CM had travelled to the United Kingdom and Germany in November-December last year, and to Japan in January this year to attract investment in Madhya Pradesh. HDFC Bank Q1 net profit dips 1.31 pc, makes Rs 9k cr contingent provisioning
On a standalone basis, the country's largest private sector lender reported a net profit of Rs 18,155 crore for the quarter, up from Rs 16,174 crore a year ago. The lender had reported a net profit of Rs 16,475 crore in the year-ago period. Mumbai, Jul 19 (PTI) HDFC Bank on Saturday posted a 1.31 per cent decline in its consolidated net profit to Rs 16,258 crore for the June 2025 quarter. The core net interest income growth moderated to 5 per cent to Rs 31,400 crore during the quarter, as the net interest margin narrowed to 3.35 per cent from 3.46 per cent in the quarter-ago period amid a 6.7 per cent growth in gross advances. The bank's chief financial officer Srinivasan Vaidyanathan said about 70 per cent of its assets are linked to external benchmarks, which are directly exposed to rate revisions by the RBI, and declined to give an outlook on how it sees the key number going ahead. He said the bank, which has previously disclosed its target to grow advances in sync with the industry, is set to grow its deposit market share this fiscal year. The overall provisions jumped to Rs 14,442 crore from Rs 2,602 crore a year ago, the bank said, adding that this includes a floating provision of Rs 9,000 crore. Vaidyanathan clarified that the excess provisions, which are at par with the gains made by share sale in the HDB Financial Services' initial public offering, are not done keeping any specific event in mind or any build of stress. The gross non-performing assets ratio inched up to 1.4 per cent as of June 30 from 1.33 per cent three months ago, largely because of cyclical reverses in the agricultural portfolio. The fresh slippages increased to RS 9,000 crore from Rs 7,500 crore in the quarter-ago period, including agri advances, while excluding the agri portfolio, the same increased to Rs 6,800 crore from Rs 6,200 crore. The bank seemed to be continuing with its 'circumspect' view on the home mortgage front, where it grew by 9 per cent. The CFO stressed that top cities are seeing home loan finance coming at 7.2 per cent, which HDFC Bank finds very low. At present, 80 per cent of the bank branches sell home loans, and the aim is to take it up to 100 per cent. The overall capital adequacy of the bank was at 19.9 per cent, including the core buffers at 17.4 per cent, as of June 30. PTI AA BAL BAL This report is auto-generated from PTI news service.
