Dave Parker, former batting champ and World Series winner, dies at 74
Parker never earned more than 24.5% support in 15 years of Hall of Fame voting by the Baseball Writers' Association of America, well short of the 75% required. But he was named on 14 of 16 ballots in December voting by the Classic Baseball Era Committee and will be elected alongside fellow Pennsylvania legend Dick Allen next month.

A legendary Pirate, Parker spent 11 years in a Pirates uniform, winning 2 batting titles, an MVP award and a World Series Championship in 1979.

But neither will be around to see it. Parker was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2013 and his prominence in the public eye diminished in the decade-plus since.
"I'm a battler," Parker said in 2018.
That was evidenced in his climb to the Hall of Fame, and while he won't be there for induction, he was able to celebrate last December, when his election was announced.
"I've been holding this speech in for 15 years," Parker told MLB Network that night.
Parker left such an impact that he's a member of both the Pirates' and Cincinnati Reds' halls of fame. He was the 1978 NL MVP, when he led the majors in both batting average (.334) and OPS (.979), slammed 30 homers and earned an NL-best 7.0 WAR.
One year later, Parker banged out 193 hits and 20 home runs and, alongside Willie "Pops" Stargell, helped lead the Pirates to their first World Series title since 1960. Parker had a dominant postseason performance, getting four hits in 12 at-bats of an NL Championship Series sweep of the Reds, and was 10-for-29 (.345) and drove in four runs in the Pirates epic seven-game triumph over the Baltimore Orioles.
Parker left Pittsburgh for Cincinnati after the 1983 season but was still in his prime. He led the NL with 42 doubles and 125 RBIs in 1985 and earned All-Star nods in two of his four seasons with Cincinnati.
In 1989, he was the oldest player on a brash, power-hitting Oakland A's team that featured beefed-up sluggers Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire. Parker hit 22 homers as the A's primary DH as he added a second championship to his portfolio. He made his seventh and final All-Star team one year later with Milwaukee.

Minute's silence held at Croke Park for Crossmaglen's Tom McKay
Mr McKay, who passed away following a short illness on Sunday, was the public relations officer (PRO) of Crossmaglen Rangers GAA club for 20 years. The County Down native became PRO at 60 in 1996 and stayed in the role until he was 81. In a past interview with this paper, he said he took the job on a 'temporary basis.' He was part of a key period for the club when Crossmaglen Rangers won 13 Armagh Senior Football Championships in a row from 1996 to 2008 - a record the club still holds. During this time, the team also won seven Ulster Club Championship titles and four All-Ireland Club Championship titles. Crossmaglen Rangers said they were 'deeply saddened' by his passing and paid tribute to his long service. The club stated: 'The Executive, players, members and supporters of Crossmaglen Rangers are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of a true Ranger. 'Tom, PRO for 20 years, lotto promoter, a true supporter and dear friend- he represented the black and amber with pride and distinction, and we thank Tom for his long and dedicated service. 'He was immensely proud of his daughters, Aine and Sinead, son-in-law Joey, and grandson Aaron when they togged out for the Rangers.' Newry Shamrocks GAC, where he also served as a former secretary prior to his tenure in Crossmaglen, paid tribute to the 'true Gael.' In a statement, the club wrote: 'Tom dedicated countless years to our club, working tirelessly behind the scenes with quiet strength, humility, and deep passion for our games. 'His commitment shaped generations of players and volunteers, and his legacy will live on in every corner of Páirc Esler. 'Later, Tom continued his remarkable service with Crossmaglen Rangers, where he was equally admired and respected. Few individuals leave a mark on two great clubs — but Tom was no ordinary man.' The club added: 'To his family, we offer our heartfelt condolences. Thank you for sharing him with us. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam. Rest easy, Tom. You will never be forgotten.' Among other roles, Mr McKay served as chair of the board of governors at St Joseph's High School, where he helped campaign for a new school building. The new facility opened in 2023. At the time, he described the new school as the end of a 'long struggle' to upgrade the 60-year-old building, aiming to 'enhance facilities and ensure young people of South Armagh are educated in a building fit for purpose.' St Joseph's High School also thanked Mr McKay for his efforts, saying, 'We would like to take this opportunity to thank Tom for everything he has done for St Joseph's High School.' For those wishing to pay their respects, the funeral will take place on Wednesday at St Patrick's Church, Crossmaglen, with Requiem Mass at 11am.

Caitlin Clark, Napheesa Collier named WNBA All-Star Game captains

Hall of Fame trainer Lukas dies aged 89
It was announced on Monday that he had been forced to retire due to serious health issues and he was to leave hospital to spend his final days with his family at his home in Louisville, Kentucky. Lukas died on Saturday evening and a statement from his family on read: 'It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of legendary Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas. 'Wayne dedicated his life to Thoroughbred racing — not only through his unmatched success on the track, but through his impact on the people within it. He shaped generations of horsemen and horsewomen, and helped grow the sport with his passion, vision, and leadership. 'Whether he was touting a promising two-year-old or quietly offering advice before a big race, Wayne brought heart, grace, and grit to every part of the game. 'At this time, we ask you to please join us in a moment of silence to honour the memory of D. Wayne Lukas.' Lukas, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1999, won the Kentucky Derby four times among his 15 Triple Crown race wins and had 20 victories at the Breeders' Cup, a record matched only by Aidan O'Brien. It had already been announced that long-serving assistant, Englishman Sebastian 'Bas' Nicholl will take over the running of his stable.
