West Bengal CM meets new Bangladesh High Commissioner at State Secretariat

The Hindu23-06-2025
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday (June 23, 2025) evening met newly appointed Bangladesh High Commissioner M. Riaz Hamidullah at the Nabanna, the West Bengal government's State Secretariat.
Ms. Banerjee asked the High Commissioner to convey warm regards to Professor Muhammad Yunus and hoped for the well-being and prosperity of the people of Bangladesh.
According to officials present at the meeting, the deliberations were held in a 'warm and cordial atmosphere' and the Chief Minister reflected her ideas on development of people with the Bangladeshi envoy. Chief Secretary Manoj Pant was also present during the interaction.
'I expressed that both sides of the border—united not just by language but also by a shared love for mangoes and traditional sweetmeats—should always keep the two people bound by shared history in each other's mutual interests,' Mr. Hamidullah said.
After the fall of Sheikh Hasina regime in Bangladesh in August 2024, the West Bengal Chief Minister has, on numerous occasions, called for cordial ties between India and Bangladesh and spoken about the cultural and linguistic ties between the people of West Bengal and Bangladesh.
The meeting comes days after Ms. Banerjee wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging the Centre to engage with the Bangladesh government to investigate the recent incident of vandalism at the historic Kachari House, the ancestral house of Rabindranath Tagore in Shahzadpur.

Bangladesh's BNP functionary lived in Bengal for 30 years, wife held: Police

Kolkata: A functionary of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) was living in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district for the past 30 years as an enrolled voter, police said on Sunday, a day after his wife — who claims to be an Indian national — was arrested. At least 300 Bangladeshis have been apprehended from various districts of West Bengal since December last year. (Representative photo) 'Sherful Mondal, a resident of the district's Bagdah area, said that she married Rezaul Mondal around 30 years ago but came to know later that he was a BNP leader and had entered India illegally,' a police officer, requesting anonymity, said. Sherful said that Rezaul returned to Bangladesh months before a mass uprising forced Awami League leader Sheikh Hasina to resign as Prime Minister and leave the country in July last year. 'Rezaul came under scanner after police started looking for his son, Firoz, for allegedly eloping with a minor girl three months ago. A case was registered against him under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The probe indicated that Firoz is a Bangladeshi national,' the officer said. 'Sherful was arrested for helping an illegal immigrant,' the officer added. Prasun Pramaik, the block development officer (BDO) of Bagdah, said that Rezaul's nationality was exposed when Election Commission officials were doing field work. 'EC officials went to the area to update the electoral roll when the man and his son could not be found,' the BDO said.
