Protesting teachers' march to West Bengal Secretariat halted amid heavy security

Kolkata Thousands of teaching and non-teaching staffers of West Bengal government schools, whose jobs were terminated after the Supreme Court order on April 3, marched to the State Secretariat on Monday. Though they were stopped midway, a group of 20 protesters was allowed to meet Chief Secretary Manoj Pant at Howrah Police Line in Shibpur. Monday's march came in response to the West Bengal School Service Commission starting a fresh recruitment process as per the apex court order. The last date to submit the application was to end on Monday but the WBSSC extended it to July 21. Tight security arrangements were made outside the secretariat and the surrounding areas. A contingent of police and Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel, armed with water cannons, were deployed to stop the protesters. They clashed with the police at several locations while trying to cross the barricades. According to the representatives of 'Joggya Sikkhak Sikkhika Adhikar Mancha' (Deserving Teachers' Rights Forum), they did not fill out the form for fresh recruitment. 'The government is standing beside the people who acquired jobs dishonestly through money, and the ones who deserved it through merit are being deprived and ignored. This is a shame on the administration,' Chinmoy Mondal, a representative of JSSAM, said during the march. The protesters have been demanding that the government publish the OMR (optical mark recognition) sheets of the 2016 examination, along with a complete list of 'untainted' candidates, and an unconditional reinstatement of their jobs. 'The Chief Secretary and Education Secretary were present at the meeting. But the meeting remained inconclusive,' Mehboob Mondal, a representative of the JSSAM, said. The protesters said the Chief Secretary only gave them 10 minutes to discuss the issue, and the government is conducting their own internal meeting with the representatives. The teachers claimed that accessing the list of tainted and untainted teachers is their right and is not a 'handout' by the government. They also vowed to boycott all indoor meetings if no concrete solution on publishing the list of 'untainted' appointees is reached by Monday midnight. Meanwhile, Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari wrote a letter addressing the teachers on social media and stated that the BJP stands by them. 'Today, once again, your call for the Nabanna campaign remained unfulfilled... Mamata Banerjee knows very well how to scatter your movement with deceit and false promises,' Mr. Adhikari wrote on X. Responding to it, Trinamool Congress spokesperson, Kunal Ghosh said that political parties are trying to use the teachers' cause to do politics. 'State government is trying in its own way. We are with the deserving teachers,' Mr. Ghosh said.

1k bodysuits for female cops, 500 anti-riot helmets for personnel on law-&-order duty

Kolkata: The Kolkata Police has taken up an initiative to ensure its personnel's safety with new bodysuits for female personnel, new helmets to protect cops during law-and-order duties, and a fresh training module for officers — even ACPs and OCs — to tackle law-and-order challenges. The move follows multiple incidents of cops being assaulted by protestors, most recently in Nadial and Rabindranagar. While Lalbazar is spending Rs 35.4 lakh on the 1,000 bodysuits, Rs 7.3 lakh will be spent on the 500 helmets. A few lakhs will also be spent on training four teams of the central division in handling mobs, emphasising the use of non-lethal mob-tackling equipment. Coming months before the assembly polls and the Nabanna march, the move aims to ensure the force's safety during law-and-order duties. The force, which often uses cricket helmets in the absence of adequate anti-riot headgear, is most excited about procuring the helmets. The helmets will be handed over after being tested in national laboratories and used by forces in J&K," said an officer. The cops are buying 500 fibreglass-reinforced plastic (FRP) helmets, with 100 blue ones for RAF and 400 green ones for other departments. Lalbazar said these helmets are primarily made from polycarbonate and will weigh no more than 1.5 kg. They feature a transparent cover in the front to ensure clear visibility. The helmets are also designed to be comfortable, with soft, germ-free cushions inside that will absorb sweat. The helmets will cover the ears, and measures are in place to make them scratch-proof. Lalbazar will also introduce a state-of-the-art body protector designed for female officers. The protective gear, weighing approximately 2 kg, features high-grade polyester construction with PU coating and ultraviolet-resistant properties. The ash-coloured outer layer incorporates SF-40 body curvature design plates, providing enhanced protection against brick-batting, knife attacks, and projectiles. The armour includes a 3D-mesh fabric inner layer for sweat absorption and a Velcro-fitted collar with LDPE foam. The protective plates, made of injection-moulded SF40-grade material, are complemented by 9mm fire-resistant trauma foam. There are also ergonomically designed elbow and shin guards, offering impact attenuation above 80%. The gear was tested at NABL-accredited laboratories, and cops said the design prioritises protection and mobility.

West Bengal CM meets new Bangladesh High Commissioner at State Secretariat

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday (June 23, 2025) evening met newly appointed Bangladesh High Commissioner M. Riaz Hamidullah at the Nabanna, the West Bengal government's State Secretariat. Ms. Banerjee asked the High Commissioner to convey warm regards to Professor Muhammad Yunus and hoped for the well-being and prosperity of the people of Bangladesh. According to officials present at the meeting, the deliberations were held in a 'warm and cordial atmosphere' and the Chief Minister reflected her ideas on development of people with the Bangladeshi envoy. Chief Secretary Manoj Pant was also present during the interaction. 'I expressed that both sides of the border—united not just by language but also by a shared love for mangoes and traditional sweetmeats—should always keep the two people bound by shared history in each other's mutual interests,' Mr. Hamidullah said. After the fall of Sheikh Hasina regime in Bangladesh in August 2024, the West Bengal Chief Minister has, on numerous occasions, called for cordial ties between India and Bangladesh and spoken about the cultural and linguistic ties between the people of West Bengal and Bangladesh. The meeting comes days after Ms. Banerjee wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging the Centre to engage with the Bangladesh government to investigate the recent incident of vandalism at the historic Kachari House, the ancestral house of Rabindranath Tagore in Shahzadpur.

Rooftop issue: Get-tough signal from Nabanna to KMC

1 2 Kolkata: A proposal on drawing up an SOP on conditions for approving rooftop facilities, which could have offered a breather to terrace restaurants and pubs in Kolkata, Salt Lake and New Town, was reportedly turned down by Nabanna . The state urban development department, headed by mayor Firhad Hakim, had sent the proposal to state chief secretary Manoj Pant for approval earlier this week. Sources said Pant turned it down, indicating the state's uncompromising stand on the issue. As a result, any immediate relief for rooftop facilities now seems a far need to prepare the SOP was felt after owners of rooftop restaurants and pubs, who had been served notices by KMC, requested the civic authorities to grant them permission to resume operations, once they cleared fire safety checks. J&K CM after explosions heard across Srinagar Acting on a list provided by Kolkata Police, the KMC buildings department sent notices to owners of 83 rooftop establishments under Section 401 of the KMC Act, asking them to keep the operations suspended till further notice. The KMC directed the owners to shut down and enforce strict fire safety regulations and the civic body's building rules. The primary demand by the authorities was to ensure a free and unimpeded access to the terraces. Some of these rooftop restaurants had approached KMC to point out that their establishments were not located on the terrace. While the civic body will conduct a hearing for three rooftop resto pubs that had moved Calcutta High Court, KMC buildings department officials said they would extend the hearing to others who approached them. The buildings department would then forward the findings to the mayor so that he could take an informed decision on whether to allow the rooftop entities to resume business or close down, said a civic official. But now that the state has refused to compromise with fire safety norms and give conditional approval to the facilities, the buildings department will be more active in conducting on-the-spot had earlier said KMC was in favour of closing rooftop restaurants that ran illegally. "To ensure fire safety regulations, we don't have any option but to shut rooftop restaurants," said a KMC official, adding the building rules specified that every terrace of any building should have a common access and should not be his displeasure over rooftop encroachments for commercial gains, Hakim said terraces should be used as fire refuge. "We should take a lesson from the fire on Park Street last June. I still shudder to think of the unfortunate deaths at Stephen Court, many of whom had found the terrace door locked," Hakim said.
