Dither Exhibition At Black Coffee Newtown
Dither, an exhibition by Miramar artist Anna Golden, opened at Black Coffee in Newtown this week. The paintings are created by single dots of acrylic paint placed onto glass, to build a texture and pattern of light and colour, and are new to Golden, who is an editor of award-winning children's fiction. 'I find it meditative,' she says, 'placing each single dot of colour on the glass and bit by bit seeing it develop into something that bursts with its own life and energy. I never know how it's going to turn out and that feels like a little bit of magic. I've dabbled for years, recently migrating back to using Resene test pots because the paint just smells right to me, but it's a dream realised to have my own exhibition. I'm thrilled to have this opportunity to share my work with the community, on the walls of the best little cafe in Newtown. I've been admiring the work on the walls here for years.' The exhibition title 'Dither' came from Golden's husband Steve, referring to a state of flustered excitement or fear, and to the diffusion of colour used to approximate the illusion of unavailable colours. Dithered images are often distinguishable by a characteristic graininess or speckled appearance. The exhibition is on at Black Coffee Newtown until 4 August.
