Rawalpindi plans grand Independence Day festivities

Pakistan's 78th Independence Day will be celebrated across Rawalpindi with great enthusiasm, patriotic spirit, and ceremonial grandeur, the district administration formally announced on Tuesday.
The central celebration will be held at Government Viqar-un-Nisa Girls College at 9 am, where Civil Defence volunteers will present a march-past and guard of honour. The commissioner and deputy commissioner will perform the flag-hoisting ceremony, followed by march-pasts by Girl Guides and Boy Scouts.
Across the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad, prominent landmarks — including Parliament House, Aiwan-e-Sadr, the Supreme Court, Secretariat buildings, bazaars, railway stations, Adiala Jail, hospitals, parks, and other public venues — will be adorned with vibrant buntings, decorative lighting, national flags, and portraits of national heroes.
Official buildings, private residences, vehicles, and even motorcycles will proudly display the Pakistani flag, contributing to a citywide atmosphere of national pride.
Cultural floats showcasing the diverse traditions of Punjab, Sindh, Potohar, Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Balochistan, and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) will feature prominently in Independence Day parades and rallies, highlighting the country's rich cultural mosaic.
At the Rawalpindi Arts Council, exhibitions will be held featuring rare photographs from the Pakistan Movement and portraits of key national figures. The festivities will also include thematic tableaux, quiz contests, speech competitions, a sports gala, and a Sufi night at Iqbal Park, which will also host a special Independence Day exhibition.
Flag-raising ceremonies will take place at the Lahore High Court Rawalpindi Bench, district courts, District Bar Association, universities, and the Education Board. From August 1 to August 14, government officials and employees will wear Independence Day badges, and national flags will be prominently hoisted on rooftops across the city.
In celebration of the occasion, sweets will be distributed at hospitals and Adiala Jail, and sentence remissions will be granted to eligible inmates. Awards will be presented to buildings with the most exceptional decorations.
Citywide decorations will commence from August 1, marking the onset of celebrations. A high-level planning meeting, chaired by DC Hassan Waqar Cheema, was held to review and finalise preparations.
During the session, a comprehensive programme of events was officially approved, underscoring the administration's commitment to celebrating Independence Day with unprecedented zeal, unity, and national pride.

"We firmly believe that military means cannot resolve this conflict," Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, permanent representative of Pakistan to the UN, told the 15-member body on Thursday. "The only viable path towards sustainable peace is that of dialogue and diplomacy," he said during a meeting called by Russia to discuss "the prospects of a diplomatic solution to the Ukrainian conflict". It was the last meeting Ambassador Asim Iftikhar presided during Pakistan's presidency of the UN Security Council which ended on July 31. Thursday's meeting was met with scrutiny by a number of Council members, who stressed that it does not represent a genuine step towards renewed diplomacy, but rather serves as a distraction from Moscow's continued violations of international law. But Russia's Deputy Permanent Representative Dmitry Polyanskiy said while many in the West — who have been arming Kyiv to the teeth — are putting on "the sheep's clothing of diplomacy," they do not seem to want to close this "very dangerous chapter" of international peace and security. Moscow has never denied the potential of diplomacy, he asserted, recalling the coup in Kyiv in 2014 and its aftermath. Yet, its appeals to find mutually acceptable ways of resolving the European crisis were ignored, leaving no choice but to initiate the special military operation in February 2022. The United States Representative, John Kelley, recalled the 14 July announcement by President Donald Trump that his country will sell its defensive weapons to NATO allies, "who can then send them on". "Our support for Ukraine's defence cannot be compared to the supply of arms and materials to Russia," which enables the aggressor to continue its full-scale invasion and occupation of Ukrainian territory, the US representative said, citing the support given by North Korea, Iran and China. Russia and Ukraine must negotiate a ceasefire and a durable peace. "It is time to make a deal," he urged, declaring that "this must be done by 8 August". Washington is prepared to implement additional measures to secure peace, Kelley added. In his remarks, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar said Pakistan stood for de-escalation and immediate cessation of hostilities and a comprehensive ceasefire in the Ukrainian conflict. Pakistan, he said, also advocates holding of meaningful negotiations that address mutual security concerns, within the framework of the purposes and principles of the UN Charter; and adopting a path of inclusive and constructive diplomacy, involving key regional and international stakeholders to promote trust and build confidence to pave the way for a just and lasting peace. In conclusion, he added, "Pakistan reiterates its firm support for a peaceful resolution of this conflict and stands ever ready to support all efforts towards that end."

Red carpet rolled out for Iran's president

Photo: APP Listen to article Iranian President Dr Masoud Pezeshkian on Saturday arrived on a two-day state visit to hold bilateral talks with the Pakistani leadership. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Muhammad Ishaq Dar and Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar received the Iranian President and his delegation at the Nur Khan airbase. Dr Pezeshkian is accompanied by a high-level delegation, including Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, senior ministers and other high-ranking officials. Dr Pezeshkian will meet President Asif Ali Zardari and also hold delegation-level talks with Pakistani Prime Minister and his cabinet ministers. A 21-gun salute was accorded in honour of President Dr Pezeshkian on his arrival, and two children dressed in traditional attire, presented bouquets to him. The Foreign Office in a statement said, "This marks Dr Pezeshkian's first official visit to Pakistan as President of Iran." It may be recalled that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif last visited Iran on May 26, 2025. The visit is expected to further strengthen the brotherly relations between Pakistan and Iran. Upon his arrival in Lahore earlier, Dr Pezeshkian was given a warm welcome by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Nawaz Sharif. His visit was marked by high-level meeting and a visit to the mausoleum of Allama Iqbal. Defence ministers The Honourable Minister for Defence of the Islamic Republic of Iran Brig General Aziz Nasir-Zadeh held a bilateral meeting with the Honourable Minister of Defence Khawaja Muhammad Asif in Islamabad. During the meeting, both sides discussed matters of mutual interest, including regional security, counter-terrorism efforts, and avenues to enhance defence cooperation between the two neighbouring countries. The ministers reaffirmed their commitment to strengthen bilateral ties and promote peace and stability in the region. The Defence Minister of Pakistan expressed appreciation for Iran's continued engagement and emphasized the importance of defence diplomacy in addressing shared security challenges. The Iranian Defence Minister thanked the Government of Pakistan for the warm welcome and reiterated Iran's desire to build stronger defence ties based on mutual respect, shared values, and trust. The meeting concluded on a positive note, with both leaders expressing optimism about the future of Pakistan-Iran defence relations and pledging to continue working together for the prosperity and security of the region.

ExxonMobil likely to come back for offshore venture
Listen to article As Pakistan is celebrating US President Donald Trump's announcement of joint development of Pakistan's oil reserves, Washington has not signalled whether its energy giant ExxonMobil will make a comeback to participate in bidding for offshore oil and gas fields. Though Pakistan and the US have a long history of relationship, American oil and gas companies have not remained very active here. Pakistan's two provinces – Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan— are rich in oil and gas deposits, however, security challenges have hindered progress on potential projects. Distrust between Pakistan and the US still prevails as conspiracy theories suggest that offshore fields in Karachi seawaters have significant hydrocarbon reserves. Many people believe that Pakistan did not allow ExxonMobil to go further beyond in sea for offshore exploration during the tenure of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government. Reports indicate that the US company sought access to an additional area in Kekra field to assess prospects of finding oil and gas but Pakistan expressed hesitation. Now, the US president has struck a new agreement for oil and gas field development in Pakistan. It comes at a time when Islamabad is inviting foreign companies to submit bids for offshore fields, which will open on September 30. Background discussions with officials revealed that the US had scores of private energy companies, but there were no signals which one would take part in field development. Pakistan expects ExxonMobil to come back for a new offshore exploration venture. However, Pakistani officials point out that Trump's announcement is just a commitment that US energy companies will come to Pakistan. "It will be clear in the coming days when the two countries will start official-level talks by including energy companies to look for opportunities of joint ventures," remarked an official. This is encouraging news as the US has been inclined towards India in the past. Even Indian oil and gas companies had formed joint ventures with US firms. Earlier, Washington even refused to export liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Pakistan and showed interest in dealing with Delhi. At that time, a US embassy official told media that Indian companies had entered into joint ventures with US firms; therefore, the doors for LNG trade were open for India, not Pakistan. Of late, the US president has hinted at American companies' investment in Pakistan's mineral sector. US Exim Bank is one of the financiers interested in pumping capital into the Reko Diq copper and gold mining project. US companies are also keen to forge joint ventures with Pakistani firms in the mineral sector, which has estimated potential worth $8 trillion. Experts call it a new opening in bilateral relationship between Pakistan and US that will clear the way for notable investment.
