The Union government's initiative to introduce the National Sports Governance Bill, 2025, in the Lok Sabha is a significant stride in reforming the functioning of National Sports Federations (NSFs). While the Bill is intended to apply uniformly across all recognised NSFs, its implications are particularly pronounced in the context of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), which has historically repelled governmental oversight due to cricket's popularity and financial dominance. The BCCI has maintained that since it does not take any financial grant from the government, it is not subject to policies applicable to other sporting federations. This stand has met with challenges, notably in the landmark BCCI vs the Cricket Association of Bihar 2016 judgment, where the Supreme Court held that the BCCI functions due to a tacit recognition by the Government of India, and the government has the power to regulate its activities through legislation. That legislation is finally near.

U.S. is the largest market for some of the Indian textile and engineering goods, say exporters

Exporters of textiles, garments, and engineering goods fear that the 25% tariff imposed by the U.S. will not only lead to loss of orders but also put them in a quandary as no other market has the high volume demand as the U.S. The Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal met delegations from the textile and engineering export councils on Friday. 'We have impressed upon the Minister that for some of the textile products, 60% to 70% exports goes to the U.S. We cannot get such high volume from any other market and if we lose the US buyers, companies supplying these products will be hit hard,' said one of the textile exporters. In the case of engineering goods too, the U.S. is the leading buyer for some of the products for several years. 'The competing countries have relatively lesser tariff. Countries that have tariff higher than India are really not competitors. Hence, there should be a detailed study now on the product lines that will be hit by the 25% tariff,' said an engineering exporter. The exporters have urged the government to reintroduce the interest subvention scheme. Indian exporters, mainly the micro, small and medium-scale enterprises, have 2% to 3% disadvantage because of the high interest rates in India compared to the competing countries. Now, they will face higher cost disadvantage because of the tariff. The exporters have also sought supportive measures from the government so that they can supply at competing prices to the U.S. buyers.

'He Has His Reasons...': Shashi Tharoor Reacts To Rahul Gandhi's Remark On Trump Tariffs

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor responded cautiously after Lok Sabha LoP Rahul Gandhi agreed with U.S. President Donald Trump's 'dead economy' remark on India. Tharoor said he wouldn't comment on his party leader's statement but emphasized that India's strategic and economic relationship with the U.S. is vital. Highlighting India's $90 billion worth of exports to the U.S., he warned against any risk to this trade. Tharoor urged support for Indian negotiators to secure a fair deal and advocated expanding exports to other regions to offset potential losses. He underscored the need to protect India's global trade interests amid tense economic commentary.#shashitharoor #rahulgandhi #donaldtrump #indianeconomy #indiaustrade #tradetalks #congress #toi #toibharat
