CM Himanta Biswa Sarma 'attacked' with bottles by Congress workers, alleges Assam minister, says ‘goons won't be spared'

Assam Minister and state government spokesperson Piyush Hazarika on Monday slammed the Congress for trying to 'sabotage' democracy in the state and alleged that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was 'attacked with bottles by 'Congress goons'. In a message posted on X, Hazarika said, 'This is how @INCAssam tried to sabotage democracy in Assam. Today their goons attacked the Chief Minister of Assam with bottles, tomorrow these same goons will launch grenades?' 'These cowards will not be spared - both electorally and legally. Mark my word @GauravGogoiAsm,' he wrote while tagging Congress party's Assam chief Gaurav Gogoi. Opposition Congress workers on Monday waved black flags at Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma's convoy in Golaghat district as they were protesting the alleged sale of 90 Gir cows, which were procured by the government, to individuals including a minister's wife. Four people were detained in connection with this incident, the police said. According to a PTI report, the Congress party had launched protests in all district headquarters against the alleged sale of the cows procured during the 2022-23 financial year by the state government for its Garukhuti Agricultural Project. Public Health Engineering Department Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah recently claimed that 90 of these cows were sold off to private individuals as there was 'inadequate infrastructure' to house them. Subsequently, a list was released and the minister's wife had allegedly bought 20 of these cows, the report added. Besides protests, the Congress also filed complaints in various police stations seeking action against the minister for alleged 'misappropriation of public property, cheating and corruption' in connection with the procurement of cows for the project. The chief minister who was on a day-long visit to Golaghat later told reporters: 'The Congress will have to protest. How will they survive otherwise? I really appreciate that they came out in this heat to protest. They too have to answer to their leaders,' he added. Referring to the sale of cows, Sarma said that it is surprising that a party that supports 'Qurbani' during Eid is now protesting against cows who were saved and given shelter, PTI reported. 'It is the BJP's 'dharma' to protect cows and that is what some of them have done. The Congress has no moral right to protest against this,' he said. The cows are alive and are being taken care of and 'those who kill and eat cows are now talking about protecting them,' he said.

Relief for Nawab Malik! Defamation case against ex-Maharashtra minister closed as BJP functionary withdraws complaint

Former Maharashtra minister Nawab Malik on Monday was granted relief by a magistrate court in Mumbai following BJP functionary Mohit Kamboj withdrew his complaint, reported PTI. In the ruling, the court said, as quoted by the PTI, 'The accused stands acquitted of the offence under IPC section 500 (defamation) and the proceeding is hereby closed.' Earlier, the BJP functionary filed the application for withdrawal of the case under section 257 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC). According to Section 257 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), a complainant can withdraw his or her complaint at any time before a final order is passed. However, the magistrate should be satisfied with the grounds for withdrawal and if permitted by the magistrate, then the accused gets acquitted. "Since this court is desirous of keeping the said case on a day-to-day basis, I am desirous to withdraw the case filed against the accused as I will be unable to attend the court on a daily basis," PTI quoted Kamboj saying in his application. "I have voluntarily decided to withdraw the case, and no undue pressure or coercion has been exerted upon me in this regard," it added. Earlier in 2021, Kamboj had filed a complaint in the court alleging Nawab Malik had defamed him and his brother-in-law following the NCB raided a cruise ship in October 2021. In his complaint, Kamboj claimed that Nawab in his press conference on arresting several persons including actor Shah Rukh Khan's son Aryan Khan had 'purposefully and intentionally defamed' him and s brother-in-law Rishab Sachdev. NCP leader and ex-Maharashtra Minister Nawab Malik alleged that Aryan Khan's arrest was a forgery. Kamboj had sought action against Malik for allegedly committing offences under sections 499 and 500 (defamation) of the Indian Penal Code.

‘Complicated, takes time': China on border row with India, says open to delimitation talks

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh meets Chinese Defence Minister Admiral Dong Jun, on sidelines of SCO Defence Ministers' Meeting, in Qingdao. (ANI Photo) NEW DELHI: Days after defence minister Rajnath Singh urged China to act on the ground and follow a structured roadmap to resolve the long-standing border tensions, Beijing has responded with a familiar line: the boundary issue is 'complicated' and will 'take time' to resolve. In its first official reaction to Singh's June 26 meeting with Chinese defence minister Dong Jun on the sidelines of the SCO defence ministers' Conclave in Qingdao, China's foreign ministry reiterated its position that the border problem cannot be solved quickly. 'The boundary question is complicated, and it takes time to settle it,' said spokesperson Mao Ning in Beijing on Monday, while highlighting the importance of continuing talks through established channels like the Special Representatives (SRs) mechanism, reported PTI. Patience, not promises Mao acknowledged the existence of diplomatic and military communication mechanisms, including the 2005 agreement on political parameters for a final settlement. 'China stands ready to maintain communication with India on issues including delimitation negotiation and border management,' she said. However, she made no direct commitment to Singh's proposal for a structured de-escalation process or action to address the 'trust deficit' that India says remains unresolved since the 2020 Ladakh standoff. Singh calls for roadmap, action on the ground In his bilateral with Dong, Singh emphasized the need for 'good neighbourly conditions' and called on China to take tangible steps along the LAC to ease tensions. According to the Indian readout, Singh also discussed the Pahalgam terror attack and India's Operation Sindoor against terror infrastructure in Pakistan, adding a broader regional security dimension to the talks. Talks continue, but resolution remains elusive Despite 23 rounds of SR-level talks, the latest held in December 2024 between NSA Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, a comprehensive resolution remains out of reach. While some disengagement steps have been implemented, including in friction points in eastern Ladakh, the boundary remains undefined, and tensions periodically resurface. Mao's remarks underline a consistent Chinese position: don't expect quick fixes. For now, both sides are focusing on managing tensions rather than resolving them. As Singh noted, without visible progress on the ground, structured dialogues alone may not be enough to rebuild trust.
