Pros and Cons: Should Mets trade for Griffin Jax?
Already, Jax is being linked in media reports to the Dodgers and Phillies. Other heavyweights figure to be lurking, too. Heck, adding an accomplished reliever at the deadline is a great way for GMs and presidents of baseball operations to feel good about themselves, right? Nothing stings more than a late-inning loss during a playoff push, so bulking up the bridge to the closer is comforting.
With that in mind, here's a look at whether the Mets should try to trade for Jax, setup man extraordinaire. What are the Pros and Cons?
PROS
The Mets were 12th in the majors in bullpen ERA (3.83) entering play Wednesday and they've encountered workload issues in the pen thanks to their starters not pitching deep into games most nights.
When they get to Edwin Díaz, great -- but the Mets must make sure the path through the high-leverage innings before the closer arrives aren't a harrowing adventure, especially if they want to make October noise.
Jax could help. The righty, who is under club control through the 2027 season, is the first graduate of the Air Force Academy to pitch in the major leagues and he's the son of an NFL linebacker. Jax's dad, Garth, played for 10 seasons for the Cowboys and Cardinals, starting in the mid-1980s.
Last year, Jax, who forms a wicked 1-2 combo in Minnesota's bullpen with Jhoan Duran, had an incredible season, recording a 2.03 ERA, a 0.87 WHIP and striking out 95 in 71 innings while walking only 15.
His ERA is much higher this season (4.09), but many underlying numbers still impress. His chase percentage (41.1) is the best in MLB and his whiff percentage and strikeout percentage are both in the 99th percentile, according to Statcast. His walks are up slightly, but he's still stingy there, too -- 2.1 per nine innings.
Jax's 88 mph sweeper is his most-used pitch and hitters are batting just .211 against it. He's been quoted saying he learned the pitch during the pandemic and it's really enhanced his repertoire with its lateral movement. Jax can throw five or six pitches, but another reliable weapon is his changeup, which is 86-plus mph. Batters have a .154 average against that delivery.
Jax has had one taste of the postseason -- in 2023, he made four scoreless appearances over two series for the Twins, allowing just one hit and no walks while striking out five.
Since 2022, when Jax became a full-time reliever, he's accumulated 5.1 WAR, according to baseball-reference.com. Only 15 relievers have been better, including the guy just above Jax on the list -- Díaz, at 5.2.
CONS
Jax is hard to hit. But once batters have been putting the ball in play, they've had success against him this season. Jax is allowing a .367 BABIP and he's giving up more line drives and more hard contact, according to baseball-reference.com. Opponents have fared well against his hard stuff, a 97-mph four-seamer and a sinker.
There may be some luck involved in how his ERA is bigger. While his ERA is where it is, his FIP (fielding independent pitching), sits at 1.91. His expected ERA is 2.88, which is ranked in the 91st percentile in MLB, according to Statcast.
The Mets actually had a hand in making his ERA balloon -- on April 16, they staged a rally against Jax.
Down 3-0 in Minnesota, they scored three times in the eighth off him, thanks to RBI doubles by Pete Alonso and Jesse Winker and an RBI single by Luisangel Acuña. Two nights later, the Braves clobbered him, too.
Over that span, Jax allowed seven runs and seven hits in 1.1 innings.
Since then, though, he has a 2.04 ERA.
VERDICT
Another easy yes, though the usual cost cautions certainly apply as well. Jax is very good, has two more seasons of team control and will be hotly pursued by other contenders. But the Twins don't HAVE to trade him, so this is no pennies-on-the-dollar deal.
Minnesota was 49-52 entering Wednesday and a fringe playoff hopeful, but they'd have Jax for two more pennant races if they kept him.
So how far, in terms of prospect return, would this year's powerhouses be willing to go to help solidify their bullpens, especially when Jax is a long-term asset?
The Dodgers just put Tanner Scott on the IL and their bullpen needs help even more than the Mets' pen does. Los Angeles has already been hunting relievers. The Phillies are ranked 23rd in relief ERA, one slot above the Dodgers. The Yankees and Tigers both have bullpen ERAs above 4.00, too.
The Mets had a rollicking ride to the NLCS last year. Another deep run probably requires more high-end bullpen parts. Jax qualifies.

StudBudz shoot back after facing fan backlash from Dave Portnoy & Angel Reese controversy
After the WNBA's All-Star weekend, two new stars emerged: Courtney Williams and Natisha Hiedeman, AKA the StudBudz. But after a meteoric rise due to their 72-hour all-access livestream during the All-Star festivities, the Twitch streamers are mired in controversy over Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy. Less than a week after gaining countless new devoted fans because their livestream gave a behind-the-scenes look at the WNBA, the two Minnesota Lynx players are facing backlash from fans who are disappointed that Williams and Hiedeman admitted they would consider having Portnoy come on their Twitch show. The controversy kicked off on July 19, when Portnoy shouted out the StudBudz on X, and the pair said they'd be open to talking to him. Fans were immediately up in arms because of Portnoy's very vocal attacks on Chicago Sky star Angel Reese, but now the StudBudz have addressed the backlash. "Okay, so guess what? When Dave comes on, we're gonna ask him, 'Hey Dave, 'Why are you talking about Angel like that?'" Williams said on a July 23 livestream. "Because we love her, bad," Hiedeman added. "Y'all see how simple that is?" Williams continued. "Y'all all over like here like, 'No, no, no!' We don't run away from [this stuff]. ... I don't think he gonna deny it, he seem like the type of guy that's gonna stand on what he feels." The pair continued to defend themselves on another livestream, where they talked about not wanting 'conditional love' from fans. 'We literally just said we open to having a conversations with anybody and that just made everybody be in like shambles,' Williams said. 'It's like c'mon bro. That conditional love, you can keep that, twin. Keep that conditional love because it's going to be a lot of things me and T probably do that y'all probably ain't gonna like.' Yesterday, Williams also took to X to point out that Reese is not upset with the StudBudz over their comments. 'The Studbudz have talked to Angel and she knows we don't play about her AT ALL End of Story,' she wrote. Who is Dave Portnoy? Portnoy caught the StudBudz attention when he posted on X after having watched their All-Star weekend livestream, writing, "I've never downloaded Twitch or any streaming platform in my life. That was until today. Studbudz has done more marketing for the @WNBA with their 72 hour stream than the bozos running the league have done since its inception. They are hilarious and humanize everybody.' But who is Portnoy? Portnoy is a social media personality and businessman who founded Barstool Sports in 2003. What started as a free sports newspaper with edgy, controversial content has since grown into a media empire worth half a billion dollars. Barstool Sports is well known for popular podcasts like Pardon My Take, for helping to popularize Call Her Daddy before the podcast's controversial exit, and Brianna Chickenfry's BFFs podcast before she left the network. Portnoy also made headlines in the past when he was accused of sexual assault by two women who made allegations that were made public in a 2021 Insider exposé. But it is his ongoing criticism of WNBA star Reese that has fans up in arms with the StudBudz because they feel his comments are racially charged. Angel Reese controversy explained Portnoy is a vocal fan of the WNBA and has been a Caitlin Clark stan since she was first drafted, but has directed a lot of ongoing hate at Reese. He has pushed the narrative that Angel Reese is classless, fueling the racially coded way people talk about Reese. He's called her an 'instigator, agitator, and jacka—,' has said that Reese is jealous of Clark, that she "deserved to get booed,' and has gotten angry at people who say his hatred for Reese has anything to do with race. "I'm sick of ESPN making it a race issue," he said in a video posted to X. "You have a superior basketball player who constantly has someone below taking shots at them, won't shut up, and then plays the victim. … If [Angel] didn't have Caitlin, nobody would know who she is. If Caitlin didn't have Angel, it would be the same popularity for Caitlin." After allegations were made that fans were hurling racist comments at Reese during a game against Clark, Portnoy called the WNBA's investigation into the incident 'bulls–t.' 'It's okay to have a spine @IndianaFever,' Portnoy posted on X,'The 'investigation' was bulls–t. Both you and @WNBA gave credibly [sic] to a very obvious troll. @espn ran with it. @CaitlinClark22 had to defend her fans for no reason. You made something outta nothing. @IndianaFever fans deserve better.' StudBudz fan backlash After the StudBudz's comments about Portnoy, fans quickly took to TikTok and X to criticize the pair for saying they would share their, now very large, platform with someone like Portnoy. "#studbudz threw it all away Portnoy!" "The tragic irony in this….The only reason the Stud Budz are on Portnoy's radar is because they were under Angel Reese all-star weekend & he's obsessed with her! Now they trying to make deals with the [devil emoji] because he bought a Stud Budz jumpsuit." "Before I buy anymore #wnba merch this year.. let's see what players stand by studbudz after this bs especially with them blocking people who are just trying to inform them! David Portnoy is a racist essaier whonis also homophobic!" It was fun while it lasted. I'm off them #studbudz #daveportnoy #wnba #wbb #fyp "studbudz trying to hold portnoy accountable bouta look like this" Dave is a sick man #wnba #wbb #studbudz #courtneywilliams #natishahiedeman #basketball #daveportnoy "i personally don't see what studbudz is trying to do with dave portnoy. you are not going to change his view or mind nor are you doing a service for angel . i would respect more if they said they just want to get him on the stream and call it a day ." Raducanu reaches semi-finals at Washington Open
Britain's Emma Raducanu recovered from 5-2 down in the second set to beat Maria Sakkari in straight sets at the Washington Open and reach her first semi-final of 2025. The 22-year-old, who upset seventh seed Marta Kostyuk in the first round and overcame four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka on Thursday, beat her Greek opponent 6-4 7-5. Raducanu will face either Anna Kalinskaya or fourth seed Clara Tauson in the last four as she bids to reach her first WTA final since winning the US Open in 2021. She told Sky Sports: "I've been doing a lot of good work. Little by little as you get results, you build confidence. "But the amount of work I'm doing behind the scenes, to have that banked, you know you've done it. It takes a little bit of pressure off the results." Raducanu also remains in the hunt for silverware in the women's doubles after reaching the semi-finals with partner Elena Rybanika. They face second seeds Taylor Townsend and Zhang Shuai later on Friday. In hot conditions in Washington DC, both Raducanu and Sakkari struggled to hold their serves in the opening set, with the Briton converting three of her six break points and her opponent two from four. However, at 4-4, Raducanu struck the decisive blow, breaking Sakkari's serve for the third time before converting a second set point. The 29-year-old Sakkari, runner-up at the tournament in 2023, had an opportunity to take the match into a decider after breaking serve in the sixth game of the second set and saving two break points for a 5-2 lead. However, Raducanu roared back to win five consecutive games, including converting two of her five break points, to take the second set 7-5. She received attention from a physio during the second set and later said she felt a "bit wobbly" due to the heat. "It was brutal today," added Raducanu. "It was a long match, the first set was over an hour. You just have to enjoy suffering and leave it all out there on the court. "Maria played an incredible match and the conditions really suit her with the liveliness of her game. "I need to prepare [for the doubles] and get out of the heat. I felt a bit wobbly at the back end of the second set." In the men's doubles, Britain's Neal Skupski and Australian partner John-Patrick Smith reached the semi-finals after coming back from a set down to upset fourth seeds Michael Venus and Yuki Bhambri 3-6 6-4 10-7.
