Increased police presence expected in Rivergrove
A Winnipeg Police Service shoulder patch is seen in Winnipeg, Sept. 2, 2021. THE CANADIAN PRESS/David Lipnowski Winnipeg police are asking public to expect increased police presence in the Rivergrove area along North Main. On Sunday, police made a social media post about the increase, citing the service is aware of the public's concerns. 'We've heard from residents and property owners who are asking for quiet evenings and safe streets. We agree everyone should be able to enjoy their vehicles, but not at the expense of others' peace and safety,' the post read. Police said the specific issues are related to noise, speeding, and reckless driving in area's parking lots on Sunday evenings, in the post. 'Despite efforts by property owners to deter this activity, including the use of barriers and private security, issues persist,' the post added. 'Reports have included aggressive behaviour toward security, tampering with barriers, and unsafe driving.' Police said officers from the Traffic Division and North District Community Support will be present on site to focus on education and enforcement.

Tesla driver arrested after crashing into power pole in Abbotsford
The Abbotsford Police Department shared this photo of a Tesla whose driver was arrested for dangerous driving on Aug. 1, 2025. A speeding Tesla driver was arrested after crashing into a power pole in Abbotsford, according to authorities. Officers spotted the vehicle 'travelling at dangerously high speeds' just after midnight Friday but 'briefly lost sight' of the car when it rounded a corner, the Abbotsford Police Department said in a social media post. Moments later, police came upon the crash scene. 'The 21-year-old driver was arrested at the scene for dangerous driving and is now facing a court date. Two passengers were detained but later released. Fortunately, no injuries were reported,' the social media post said, adding it was lucky no one was injured. The crash knocked out power to hundreds in the area overnight and prompted a lengthy road closure, police added. A conviction for the Criminal Code offence of dangerous driving can result in fines or jail time, depending on the circumstances of the case.

Man dies in Quebec City residential fire
A man died and a woman was injured after a fire erupted in a row housing development in Quebec City on Saturday night. Quebec City's fire department said that at around 10:55 p.m., several calls were made to 911 to report a fire at a residential building on Gingras Street. According to Bill Noonan, spokesperson for the Service de protection contre l'incendie de Québec, dispatch details indicate that flames could be seen escaping from a residence and windows were bursting from the heat. A woman was also reported being on part of the building's front roof. Firefighters at the scene entered the burning building and located an unconscious man on the second floor, brought him outside and began resuscitation, Noonan explained in a statement. But the 54-year-old man was pronounced dead. "No smoke alarm sounds were heard by the first firefighters on the scene," Noonan said. He added that, when the first firefighters arrived, a woman was lying on the ground outside with burns. She was then taken to hospital. The fire was extinguished a few hours after it broke out. Around 60 firefighters were involved in the operation.
