Super Bowl Champion Willie Colon Drives Discovery at 2025 Annual Lupus Research Alliance Golf Fundraiser
SUMMIT, N.J., June 24, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- The Lupus Research Alliance, the world's largest private funder of lupus research, partnered with Super Bowl Champion and current Fox Sports 1 co-host Willie Colon on the 11th Annual Willie Colon Golf Outing – raising an incredible $450,000 for lupus research.
The sold-out event on June 23 brought together over 300 golfers in honor of Colon's late mother Jean Davis, who had lupus, a chronic, complex autoimmune disease that affects millions worldwide. To date, the event has raised nearly $3 million to help the LRA fund and fuel innovative breakthroughs that aim to improve the lives of those living with lupus.
"Eleven years ago, my family chose to partner with the Lupus Research Alliance with this golf outing – all in the hopes of supporting lupus research that can improve treatments and find a cure," said Colon, a long-time and highly committed LRA board member. A host of sports stars joined Colon, the former Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Jets lineman, aiming to score a hole-in-one for lupus research. Those in attendance included Craig Carton (FS1), Greg Giannoti (WFAN), Brian Custer (ESPN), and Connor Hughes (SNY). Former New York Jets players in attendance include Ryan Fitzpatrick, Brandon Marshall, David Harris, Erik Coleman, Fred Baxter, Dave Szott, Matt Simms, and Chris Ivory. Other sports celebrities supporting the event include Darnell Stapleton (Pittsburgh Steelers), Brandon Hunt (Las Vegas Raiders), Adalius Thomas (Baltimore Ravens), Kendall Simmons (Pittsburgh Steelers), Chris Canty (New York Giants), and Mike Adams (Carolina Panthers).
At the event, Colon thanked the five chairs who helped organize the outing -- Xavier V. Shedeur Sanders unfazed by lack of first-team reps at Browns camp
Associated Press BEREA, Ohio (AP) — If Shedeur Sanders is frustrated about not receiving any snaps with the first team during the first week of the Cleveland Browns' training camp, he isn't showing it. Sanders said on Friday that it is out of his control and not his place to answer why he has worked mainly with the third and fourth teams during the first three days of practice. 'I'm not even going to think about that or have that even in my thought process of why it is,' Sanders said. 'It doesn't make me feel down or it doesn't make me feel left out or anything because I know who I am as a person. I know who I am as an individual, and I know what I could bring to this team.' Sanders — selected by the Browns in the fifth round after a precipitous fall in April's draft — did get some work with the second team for the first time on Friday. He had one of the best throws of the 80-minute practice on a completion down the middle to tight end Blake Whiteheart during 11-on-11 drills. Sanders showed he could bounce back after a bad day of practice. He was unable to throw a pass during a four-play red zone drill on Thursday after snap issues on two plays, a false start, and what would have been a sack. 'I know whenever I get my opportunity, I've got to maximize it,' he said. 'I just got to think about what I could do to get better even if I'm not getting reps.' Coach Kevin Stefanski didn't say if Sanders would receive any first-team snaps. Stefanski did note, though, that he has been happy with Sanders' progress over the past couple of months. 'Yeah, I think Shedeur does a nice job of keeping the main thing, the main thing. He's working hard and keeping his head down,' Stefanski said. There have been 13 sets of 11-on-11 drills during the first three days. Joe Flacco has had the most work with the first team with seven, Kenny Pickett has had five and third-round pick Dillon Gabriel one. Flacco and Pickett are the two main combatants in the four-man competition to see who will be the starter for the Sept. 7 opener against the Cincinnati Bengals. All four are getting plenty of snaps on the two practice fields, but there is a difference in who they are working with. Sanders said the one advantage of not getting many snaps is that he has had the opportunity to learn more in-depth about everything instead of on the fly like he did at Jackson State and Colorado, where his father, Hall of Fame cornerback Deion Sanders, instantly made him the starter. Shedeur Sanders added that the area where he has made the most improvement is being more comfortable with the playbook. 'It's always consistent growth, and it always feels like I just solved a puzzle or anything, like, all the time,' he said. Quarterback coach Bill Musgrave — who was Deion Sanders' teammate during San Francisco's Super Bowl-winning season in 1994 — has been impressed with Sanders' ability to call the play in the huddle as well as calling plays under center. He also added he has seen the same progress from Gabriel, a third-round pick. When it comes to the outside pressures Sanders might face — including heightened expectations from fans — Musgrave said that everyone has pressure, but the approach has to remain the same. 'The focus has got to be on the techniques, the five-step drop, the seven-step drop, being accurate with our throws,' Musgrave said. 'If we can focus on our trade, the external factors take a back seat, which is where they should remain.' While some may waver from the expectations, Sanders has embraced them. He has made a couple of appearances in the Cleveland area, including hosting a community event to benefit residents displaced after an apartment complex fire. He also accepted responsibility for two speeding tickets last month. However, things that are happening off the field are the last thing on Sanders' mind over the next five weeks. 'The external is cool. I'm thankful for it,' he said. 'But hey, when I get out there, I'm not thinking about external. About 100 players, two dozen employees face penalty over Super Bowl tickets
The NFL is fining roughly 100 players and two dozen club employees for violating the NFL's policy for selling Super Bowl 59 tickets above face value, a person familiar with the situation told USA TODAY Sports. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter. The Associated Press was first to report the news. A memo sent to teams by NFL chief compliance officer Sabrina Perel and obtained by USA TODAY said the investigation is ongoing. "Our initial investigation has determined that a number of NFL players and coaches, employed by several NFL clubs, sold Super Bowl tickets for more than the ticket's face value in violation of the policy. This longstanding league policy, which is specifically incorporated into the collective bargaining agreement, prohibits league or club employees, including players, from selling NFL game tickets acquired from their employer for more than the ticket's face value or for an amount greater than the employee originally paid for the ticket, whichever is less," the memo read. "We are in the process of completing our investigation into this matter, but the investigation has revealed that club employees and players sold their tickets to a small number of 'bundlers' who were working with a ticket reseller to sell the Super Bowl tickets above face value." The Associated Press reported that players who resold their tickets to bundlers will have to pay a fine of 1 1/2 times the face value they paid. They also won't be permitted to buy tickets for the next two Super Bowls unless they are playing in the game. Team employees who violated the league's policy will be fined two times face value. Those who worked to bundle the tickets will also face increased penalties. The Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22 in Super Bowl 59. "In advance of Super Bowl 60, we will be enhancing the mandatory compliance training regarding the policy for all league personnel, which will emphasize the specific requirements of the policy and the broader principle that no one should profit personally from their NFL affiliation at the expense of our fans," the memo stated. AI makes game-by-game predictions for Patriots 2025 season
For the last few years, the New England Patriots have somehow managed to draw the short straw from the NFL scheduling gods. They've been one of the worst teams in the league faced with one of the hardest schedules. But their fortunes have seemingly changed for the better. Not only did coach Mike Vrabel throw on the red cape to help save the flailing franchise, but the scheduling gods blessed them with one of the easiest schedules in the league. Of course, that doesn't mean much if the team fails to live up to expectations. I shared my game-by-game predictions for the Patriots in 2025 after the schedule release back in May. This time, we are turning to the AI assistant Grok to predict the Patriots' final record at the end of the season. Week 1: Sept. 7 vs. Las Vegas Raiders (1:00 p.m. ET CBS) The Patriots open the season at home against the visiting Las Vegas Raiders. Much has changed for the Raiders in the offseason with Pete Carroll stepping in as the new head coach and the team signing veteran quarterback Geno Smith. Will that be enough to change their fortunes in 2025? Week 2: Sept. 14 at Miami Dolphins (1:00 p.m. ET CBS) The Dolphins seem to be falling apart before the season even begins. They traded tight end Jonnu Smith and cornerback Jalen Ramsey to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Veteran corner Artie Burns also recently went down with a scary knee injury. With that said, this game is in Miami, and even when Tom Brady was under center, South Beach has long been a house of horrors for New England. Week 3: Sept. 21 vs. Pittsburgh Steelers (1:00 p.m. ET CBS) The Pittsburgh Steelers went all in on a potential Super Bowl run in the offseason, including signing legendary quarterback Aaron Rodgers to a deal. This isn't the same Rodgers from the glory days, and even though the team is loaded defensively, there are still serious offensive concerns. Week 4: Sept. 28 vs. Carolina Panthers (1:00 p.m. ET FOX) The Carolina Panthers were one of the worst teams in the league last season. There is no such thing as a sure thing in the NFL, but these are the kinds of games the Patriots need to start winning more consistently to demonstrate a real culture shift. This feels like a must-win game at home if New England hopes to make some real noise this season. Week 5: Oct. 5 at Buffalo Bills (8:20 p.m. ET NBC) The Patriots have been big-brothered by quarterback Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills ever since Tom Brady took his talents to Tampa Bay. There's hope that the tide could turn at some point with the arrival of Drake Maye. However, a road Sunday Night Football game in Week 5 at Buffalo might be too tough to overcome for a rebuilding Patriots team. Week 6: Oct. 12 at New Orleans Saints (4:25 p.m. ET CBS) The Saints have a rookie coach and rookie quarterback heading into the 2025 season. It's a Hail Mary attempt at breathing new life into a franchise that hasn't been to the playoffs since 2020. Things are far from perfect in New England, but they are in much better shape than the Saints. Week 7: Oct. 19 at Tennessee Titans (1:00 p.m. ET CBS) Patriots coach Mike Vrabel would probably never say it publicly, but he likely has this game circled in red. He will be returning to Tennessee for the first time as an NFL head coach to face the team that fired him in 2024, after six seasons. It would be a measure of revenge to go into Tennessee and hand them a loss in the first matchup between Drake Maye and Titans rookie quarterback Cam Ward. Week 8: Oct. 26 vs. Cleveland Browns (1:00 p.m. ET FOX) The Cleveland Browns are one of the best defensive teams in football, but there are more questions than answers on the offensive side of the ball. This is a team with five quarterbacks currently on its roster. If the Patriots' offense can avoid imploding at the hands of Myles Garrett and company, they'll have a real shot at coming out on top in this AFC matchup. Week 9: Nov. 2 vs. Atlanta Falcons (1:00 p.m. ET CBS) The Atlanta Falcons appear to be moving on from the short-lived Kirk Cousins era and going all in on Michael Penix Jr. as their starting quarterback. Penix appeared in five games last season, but this will be his first year as the guy in Atlanta. That bodes well for a Patriots defensive unit that should be significantly improved in 2025. Week 10: Nov. 9 at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1:00 p.m. ET CBS) Grok has the Patriots' four-game win streak coming to an end on the road against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Quarterback Baker Mayfield has an embarrassment of riches on the offensive side of the ball in Tampa Bay, and a less-than-stellar defensive performance from New England could end badly for the Patriots on the road against a potential playoff contender. Week 11: Nov. 13 vs. New York Jets (8:15 p.m. ET Prime Video) The Patriots will play host to the New York Jets for a Thursday Night Football showdown in November. This will be the NFL Nike Rivalries game, where the Patriots are slated to debut their new rivalries uniform. The Jets have been a walking disaster in recent years, and it's hard to envision that suddenly changing for this matchup. Week 12: Nov. 23 at Cincinnati Bengals (1:00 p.m. ET CBS) Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals still probably have a bad taste in their mouth after being upset by the Jerod Mayo-led Patriots last season. Granted, the Patriots should be significantly better in 2025, but they might be punching above their weight against the Bengals. Barring another stunning drop-off for Cincinnati, it's hard to envision lightning striking twice for the Patriots. Week 13: Dec. 1 vs. New York Giants (8:15 p.m. ET ESPN) There is still no love lost from the New York Giants ending the Patriots' perfect season nearly 20 years ago at Super Bowl XLII. You can rest assured that Mike Vrabel, who played for the 2007 Patriots team, hasn't forgotten. The Giants lost more football games than the Patriots last season, and they'll be counting on rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart to change their fortunes. Week 14: BYE WEEK Week 15: Dec. 14 vs. Buffalo Bills (1:00 p.m. ET CBS) Grok is predicting a clean sweep for the Buffalo Bills in their head-to-head meetings with the Patriots this season. It's hard to bet against Josh Allen, but it also wouldn't be surprising to see the Patriots steal a win at home in this one. They will also likely be the more desperate team in terms of playoff seeding. Week 16: Dec. 21 at Baltimore Ravens (1:00 p.m. ET CBS) Going on the road and knocking off a perennial playoff contender like the Baltimore Ravens might be too much to ask for this Patriots team. The Ravens don't lose often, and it's even tougher beating them at M&T Bank Stadium. Beating a Lamar Jackson-led team on the road would mean the Patriots haven't just improved. They have arrived. Week 17: Dec. 28 at New York Jets (1:00 p.m. ET CBS) This AI simulation has the Patriots sweeping the New York Jets in the regular season series. There are far too many questions on offense for a Jets team still picking up the pieces from their failed Aaron Rodgers experiment. It isn't a great outlook when the team is looking for quarterback Justin Fields to save them. Week 18: Jan. 3/4 vs. Miami Dolphins (TBD) The Patriots getting a warm-weather opponent like the Dolphins at Foxborough in January bodes well for the team to finish the season with another victory. There are serious concerns with Miami's defense with the loss of Jalen Ramsey and Artie Burns. Drake Maye and the Patriots' offense should feast in this one.
