EU wheat stuck near contract lows

PARIS: Euronext wheat prices edged down on Friday to trade near contract lows as further signs of Russian export competition reinforced a bearish mood fuelled this week by improving global supply prospects.
September milling wheat, the most active position on Paris-based Euronext, settled at 200.75 euros a metric ton, down 0.6%. It held close to a contract low of 200.25 euros set on Thursday but again remained above the psychological floor of 200 euros.
December futures, also used as a benchmark for the 2025 crop, ended down 0.5% at 212.25 euros, near a contract low of 211.25 euros from early May.
Russia needs to act swiftly to maintain its position as the world's top wheat exporter, Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Patrushev said on Friday, acknowledging a sharp slowdown in wheat exports in the current season.
Patrushev, who is responsible for agriculture in the government, said Russia will export 44.5 million metric tons of wheat in the 2024-2025 season. That was down sharply from last season but still above some analyst estimates for this season.
On Thursday, agricultural consultancy Sovecon raised its forecast for Russia's wheat exports for the 2025-2026 season, citing improved weather conditions for the harvest.
An upturn in Russian export activity could further dim Western European prospects after a slow season. 'With only June remaining in the season, a heavy EU wheat end-stock and a large incoming crop are anticipated,' British merchant Frontier Agriculture said in a note. Rain in parched areas of northern Europe in the past week has eased drought concerns.
French wheat crop conditions declined in the week to May 26 but less sharply than in the previous week, data from farm office FranceAgriMer showed on Friday.
Uncertainty over international trade relations also hung over the market. US President Donald Trump said on Friday that China had violated an agreement with the US to mutually roll back tariffs and trade restrictions for critical minerals.
Volumes on Euronext were light, with some participants taking a long weekend after Thursday's Ascension Day holiday in some European countries.

Palm slips on weak soyoil and crude, lack of fundamental signals

JAKARTA: Malaysian palm oil futures closed lower for the second straight session on Tuesday, tracking soyoil weaknesses in the Dalian and Chicago markets and softer crude oil prices following a lack of fundamental triggers. The benchmark palm oil contract for September delivery on the Bursa Malaysia Derivatives Exchange lost 16 ringgit, or 0.4%, to 3,970 ringgit ($946.14) a metric ton at the close. 'Market sentiment remains cautious amid broader macro uncertainties, awaiting clearer fundamental signals,' said Darren Lim, commodities strategist at Singapore-based brokerage Phillip Nova. 'Subdued crude and edible oil prices, along with a firmer ringgit against the U.S. dollar, had given pressure to palm oil prices in the lack of fresh fundamental triggers.' Dalian's most-active soyoil contract fell 0.03%, while its palm oil contract gained 0.29%. Soyoil prices on the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) slipped 0.02%. Palm oil tracks the price movements of rival edible oils as it competes for a share of the global vegetable oils market. Palm falls on weak rival Dalian oils, crude Oil prices were steady on Tuesday as investors assessed expectations that OPEC+ will announce an output hike for August at an upcoming meeting as well as trade negotiations. Weaker crude oil futures make palm a less attractive option for biodiesel feedstock. The ringgit, palm's currency of trade, strengthened 0.33% against the dollar, making the commodity more expensive for buyers holding foreign currencies. Indonesia's crude and refined palm oil exports soared 53% in May from a year ago, data from the statistics bureau showed, as the tropical oil started trading at a discount to its rivals, boosting demand from key buyers. Indonesia raised its crude palm oil (CPO) reference price to $877.89 per metric ton for July, up from $856.38 per metric ton in June, a trade ministry regulation showed on Monday. Exports of Malaysian palm oil products for June rose 4.3% month-on-month, according to independent inspection companyAmSpec Agri Malaysia, while according to Intertek Testing Services, it grew 4.7%.

Dubai moves one step closer to flying taxis with successful test flight

Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced on Monday the region's first successful test flight of the Joby Aerial Taxi. The test flight was conducted at a designated desert test site in Dubai. The flight was part of a series of daily test operations aimed at evaluating the aircraft's performance within the local environment, in preparation for the commercial rollout of urban air mobility services. The city plans to launch Aerial Taxi station operations near Dubai International Airport next year, during which the inaugural commercial Aerial Taxi flight is scheduled to take place. A journey from Dubai International Airport to Palm Jumeirah, for example, is expected to take just 12 minutes, compared to approximately 45 minutes by car. The Joby Aerial Taxi has vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) capability, which makes it suited for urban environments, requiring minimal horizontal space for take-off and landing at vertiports. According to the RTA, it is a sustainable, environmentally friendly vehicle powered by electricity, generating zero operating emissions. Its design features six rotors and four battery packs, enabling it to achieve a flight range of up to 160 km and a maximum speed of 320 km/h. The flying taxi accommodates four passengers and operates at significantly lower noise levels compared to conventional helicopters, the statement added. H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai, said: 'the integration of aerial mobility into our transport ecosystem is a step towards ensuring the city's infrastructure is built around the needs of future generations.' Meanwhile JoeBen Bevirt, founder and CEO of Joby Aviation, said that as a result of the firm's 'forward-looking strategic partnership with Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority, we are helping shape a future where clean and quiet aviation becomes the new norm.' At the beginning of 2024, RTA signed an agreement to launch the Aerial Taxi service in collaboration with the General Civil Aviation Authority, the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, Skyports Infrastructure, a British company in the development of advanced air mobility infrastructure, and Joby Aviation. 'The agreement positions Dubai as the first city in the world to offer urban air mobility through an advanced network of VTOL infrastructure for Aerial Taxis,' it said.

Renault to report $11.2 billion loss on Nissan stake in first half

PARIS: French carmaker Renault said on Tuesday it will report an extraordinary loss of about 9.5 billion euros ($11.2 billion) on its stake in Nissan Motor in the first half after changing the way it accounts for the investment. The change comes as the two companies loosen their ties and adjust a two-decade long partnership, with Renault gradually lowering its stake in the Japanese firm which is battling slumping sales and scrambling to boost cash. Renault owns 35.7% of Nissan, with 17.05% held directly and the rest through a trust. It said in the future, any change in the value of the holding would be directly recognised in equity and assessed based on Nissan's share price, with no impact on its net income nor on dividends it pays out. Renault suffers net loss of 338mn euros in 2022 due to Russia exit It added that there would be no change to operational projects and collaboration between the two firms. Renault, which reports its first-half results on July 31, is also seeking a new CEO, with current leader Luca de Meo due to depart on July 15 and later take the helm at luxury firm Kering.
