
OTUS Project Collects Critical Surface Wind Data Inside Of Tornadoes

As any seasoned storm chaser or meteorologist will tell you, the business of predicting tornadoes, while better than in the past, is still largely hit or miss.
Supercells, the massive cloud structures that produce twisters, can have all of the traditional weather ingredients required to drop a tornado, but it doesn't happen. At other times, conditions may be less than perfect, and a tornado will suddenly appear. This anomaly, of course, makes it difficult to, in a timely manner, send tornado warnings out to alert the public as to when to shelter.
Part of the problem, says Louis Tucker, a recent business/engineering graduate of Virginia Tech, is that tornadic winds close to the ground are difficult to measure, and therefore aren't fully understood. Radar can measure fairly accurately wind speed and direction higher up, say, above 200 hundred feet. But that doesn't tell the story of what's going on at the surface, the area of a tornado that's most damaging to humans and their dwellings.
What to do? With brother Nelson, Louis devised a system whereby special drones with three-dimensional wind sensors can be flown near, or even into, the cones of tornadoes to take such critical measurements close to the ground.

Louis is a crack drone racer. He won the National Collegiate Drone Racing Championship in 2023. Brother Nelson is a tornado fanatic studying meteorology at Millersville University in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, who can recite the history of epic twisters going all the way back to the early 1900s - the locations of, and the damage they've done. Put the two siblings together and voila, you have OTUS, Observation Of Tornadoes By UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) Systems.
With the help of veteran storm chaser Erik Fox, and aerospace engineer Tanner Beard, OTUS was born in 2024. The group chased with their special drones for two weeks last May with the goal of intercepting a twister or two to prove their concept, and to secure funding. They did penetrate a twister in Duke, Oklahoma, gathering valuable data, and, as a result score some initial public funding. But recent budget cuts to NOAA and government weather services took away most of that.
Undaunted, this past spring the group found and penetrated a half-dozen tornadoes. One, the Spiritwood, North Dakota, wedge earlier this month, was rated at least EF-3 (ratings go from EF-o to EF-5), quite a monster.
Speaking of ratings, another benefit to Tucker's research is to help revamp the controversial EF system. Today, a rating is based on damage a tornado does versus its actual wind speeds. So you can have a violent tornado rated less than it should be just because it travels through a non-populated area - and vice versa. The ability to measure surface wind speeds will help with that.

Tucker estimates that his group has put more than $25,000 of their own money into OTUS. A documentary filmed this past spring, produced by Paradigm Films, is in the works and due out next year. And a detailed report on OTUS surface wind data gathered this year, now being calculated and reviewed, will be out this summer. Hopefully, the report and documentary will help attract more private and public funding, Tucker says.

In the Quest to Shrink NASA, Trump Forgets National Security
On a crisp evening in December 2023, I received an urgent alert: a swarm of unidentified drones had been detected above Langley Air Force Base in Virginia, inside highly restricted airspace. As NASA administrator at the time, I was immediately concerned. Langley is one of the most sensitive sites in the United States — home to F-22 Raptors, supersonic stealth fighters with highly classified capabilities and NORAD operations. It also happens to neighbor NASA's Langley Research Center, where our experimental technology had spotted the drones. Isolated drone sightings around military bases weren't unheard-of, but nothing like this swarm had ever happened before. I called senior Pentagon officials twice and raised the issue with staff at the National Security Council. I noted it was NASA technology that was able to see the drones, and based on our observations, this activity wasn't random: It's plausible the drones launched from a ship or submarine lurking as little as three miles offshore in international waters, or perhaps from trucks or trailers concealed in nearby woodlands. The incursion by the drones lasted 17 days. To my knowledge, we still do not know their origin or purpose, or how much of a threat they posed. But it was thanks to NASA technology that they were even picked up in the first place. The Air Force base did not have that capability. If a drone incursion could do something like this at Langley, what would stop a determined adversary from launching a flock of spacecraft-downing drones at the Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral Space Force Station? Or Vandenberg Space Force Base in California? Or Wallops Island off Virginia? These aren't just sites for launching rockets into space and delivering NASA payloads into orbit — they're strategic targets vital to the defense of our homeland. The events at Langley underscore how although NASA is a civilian agency for space exploration, its role stretches beyond that. Its study of the environment of space makes it possible for the United States to launch and operate satellites vital for spotting unusual things that NASA calls 'anomalies' and allowing communications across the globe. Its technological advancements have made it possible to develop state-of-the-art rockets and aircraft that few other countries can match. Winning the race to the moon bolstered national prestige and geopolitical dominance that helped the United States win the Cold War. NASA's fleet of Earth observation satellites gives vulnerable communities the information they need to plan for an uncertain future under climate change. Severe thunderstorm warning issued for Oklahoma City area: See live radar, weather alerts
A severe thunderstorm warning was issued by the National Weather Service in Norman at 4:13 p.m. on Friday, June 27. This warning applies to Cleveland, Garvin, McClain and Murray counties. Meteorologists warn of winds as strong as 60 mph. Use caution, officials warn of hail as large as 0.75 inches. The NWS warns: "For your protection move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building." At 4:13 p.m., the NWS issued a statement: "The National Weather Service in Norman has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for: Garvin County in southern Oklahoma, Southeastern Cleveland County in central Oklahoma, Northeastern Murray County in southern Oklahoma, Southwestern McClain County in central Oklahoma, Until 5 p.m. CDT. At 4:13 p.m. CDT, severe thunderstorms were located along a line extending from 3 miles southeast of Criner to 6 miles west of Antioch to 4 miles northeast of Hennepin, moving northeast at 15 mph. HAZARD: 60 mph wind gusts. SOURCE: Radar indicated. IMPACT: Expect damage to roofs, siding, and trees. Locations impacted include: Pauls Valley, Purcell, Sulphur, Davis, Slaughterville, Wynnewood, Lexington, Maysville, Elmore City, Wayne, Paoli, Katie, Byars, Foster, Rosedale, Antioch, Criner, Hennepin, Payne, and Whitebead." A severe thunderstorm warning means the area is experiencing or is about to experience a storm with winds of 58 mph or higher or hail an inch in diameter or larger.
