KCCI urges review of outdated Stamp Act 1949
Published on: Mon, May 26, 2025 Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: The Kadazandusun Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) has called on the Federal Government to conduct a full review of the Stamp Act 1949, describing it as outdated and burdensome, especially for small businesses and rural communities in Sabah. KCCI Supreme Council Member Dennison R. Indang said the Act, which predates Malaysia's independence, continues to impose rigid penalties and complex compliance requirements that disproportionately affect microenterprises and low-income groups. 'In Sabah, many transactions are informal in nature such as family rental agreements or small-scale community loans and these are now vulnerable to harsh enforcement,' he said in a statement today. Dennison proposed several reforms, including stamp duty exemptions or reductions for transactions under RM10,000, an amnesty mechanism for first-time unintentional non-compliance, decentralisation of stamp duty powers to Sabah and Sarawak, bilingual digital platforms for easier access, and the formation of a Parliamentary Select Committee to reassess the Act. 'Our tax laws must empower, not punish, those trying to comply. Warisan to contest all 73 seats

Armizan's child not at SMA Tun Datu Mustafa

In a Facebook post, Ghazali clarified, 'For the record, none of Datuk Armizan's children attend that school.' He added that a police report has been lodged against a TikTok user under the handle 'saka_merah7' for allegedly spreading false and malicious content intended to defame the minister. 'Social media must not be used to spread slander or stir assumptions that lead to dangerous falsehoods,' he said. Ghazali said it is his duty to counter the spread of misinformation, especially when the family of the late student is still grieving. 'This is a time for empathy, not political exploitation. Sabah's political scene is mature. "There's no need to stoop this low. Enough is enough. ACCIM calls for enhanced tax incentives to boost Malaysian exports
PETALING JAYA: While praising the government's efforts to lower tariffs, the Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (ACCIM) urged for increased tax incentives and grants to support exporters and businesses. Its president, Datuk Ng Yih Pyng, said the Allowance for Increased Exports (AIE) should be widened and increased as part of this reduction in tariff. 'Currently, an allowance equal to 10% of the value of increased exports, deductible against 70% of statutory income,' he said in a statement on Friday (Aug 1). He said that the government should also increase the lifetime cap of the Market Development Grant to RM500,000, while raising the per-claim ceiling to RM35,000 for international trade fairs and exhibitions, and RM10,000 for locally held trade fairs and exhibitions. He claimed that the current limits of RM5,000 for local and RM25,000 for overseas reimbursement were not enough. However, he also mentioned that he supports the Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry to help exporters address the current tariffs by improving their efficiency and productivity. At the same time, he also agrees to explore further government support for businesses, particularly those in small and medium enterprises, to adapt to the new baseline tariff rate. Its minister, Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, said they would continue to work closely with stakeholders to maximise the opportunities from this development, including the strong momentum in approved investments, driven by ongoing infrastructure projects, a consistent realisation rate of over 85% for approved investments, as well as catalytic national development initiatives, in a statement on Friday. 'We remain committed to defending Malaysia's trade interests while fostering mutually beneficial partnerships with key economies, including the United States. Malaysia will also continue to pursue its industrial reform and strategic trade diversification initiatives to support the nation's growth,' he said.
