Simon Cowell to search for next breakout band in new Netflix docuseries
The 65-year-old announced he was launching a UK-wide search for a new pop group in June 2024.
He told the PA news agency at the time: 'I would pray to find a band as good as One Direction and to find the records as good as they made, there are so many factors involved to make a band successful all over the world.'
Through Cowell's production company, Syco Entertainment, which is known for Britain's Got Talent, The X Factor and The Greatest Dancer, the music mogul has helped to launch the careers of pop bands including One Direction, Little Mix and Fifth Harmony.
One Direction, comprising Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik, were formed on The X Factor in 2010.
The boyband had hits with songs including What Makes You Beautiful and Best Song Ever, before going on an 'extended hiatus' in 2016.
In October 2024, Payne died at the age of 31 after falling from the third-floor balcony of a hotel in Argentina.
The new six-episode docuseries will stream on Netflix in December 2025.
The search was documented by a TV crew from Box To Box Films, the company behind Formula 1: Drive To Survive.
News of the show was announced alongside a slate of new unscripted series, including reality shows Let's Marry Harry and Calabasas Confidential.

Those close to the family are said to be extremely 'concerned about the impact this is having on Sharon,' adding that 'she and Ozzy were such a unique couple [and] them being apart it is heartbreaking'. Insiders previously disclosed to the Daily Mail the growing concerns for Sharon, 72, who has dealt with her own health issues over the years, including a colon cancer diagnosis in 2002 that led to surgery and chemotherapy. The music manager, who has been vocal about her life-long struggle with body image issues, also recently revealed she has struggled to gain weight after stopping popular weight-loss drug Ozempic. Sharon and Ozzy had a tumultuous, high-profile relationship that was well-documented by the media and their reality TV show, The Osbournes. The couple first met in 1970 when Sharon - the daughter of Ozzy's then manager -was only 18. At the time, he was married to his first wife Thelma, with whom he had two children, Louis and Jessica. After Ozzy left Black Sabbath, Sharon took over as his manager, and their epic love story began, with a wedding in Hawaii on July 4, 1982. They weathered countless affair allegations - one of which pushed Sharon to overdose - and celebrated their 43rd wedding anniversary on July 4, one day before Ozzy's farewell concert, Back to the Beginning. But 'Kelly will now be there for Sharon,' because of the 'very unique bond' she shared with her father. The hit song lyrics that Mike Posner says aren't ‘true anymore'
Singer Mike Posner has disowned the lyrics of his 2016 hit song "I Took a Pill in Ibiza", as 'none of them are true anymore'. The 37-year-old musician, whose track topped the UK charts for four weeks, originally wrote the song after taking ecstasy with DJ Avicii in Ibiza, opening with the line: 'I took a pill in Ibiza to show Avicii I was cool'. Posner expressed pride in his personal transformation over the past 11 years, emphasising self-love and a shift away from behaviours he once engaged in to seek approval. He detailed overcoming significant physical and emotional challenges, such as climbing Mount Everest, leading to his healthiest relationship. Elton John and Spin̈al Tap release new version of Stonehenge – and correct stage prop disaster
Elton John and Spin̈al Tap have joined forces on a new version of the band's song Stonehenge – and have finally corrected one of the great scenery-based mishaps in classic rock. The song, performed in the 1984 rock-mockumentary This Is Spin̈al Tap, is at the heart of one of the film's most cherished scenes: when the band, having made a mistake when commissioning an 18ft Stonehenge stage prop, have to make do with an 18in version being lowered from the rafters. After some hired dwarves caper around it, the band's David St Hubbins complains that they looked likely to crush it underfoot. No such problems with the new version made for the long-awaited sequel Spın̈al Tap II: The End Continues, which will be released 12 September in the US and UK (and 25 September in Australia). In the scene, released today along with a recording of the song on streaming services, the band put in a considerably more triumphant performance, complete with full-sized standing stones and the return of the dwarves. Appearing in a cloak from beneath the stage is Elton John, who takes over the lead vocal, singing lyrics such as 'Stonehenge, where a man's a man / and the children dance to the pipes of Pan' with the requisite po-faced grandeur. John is one of a number of starry cameos in the film, along with Paul McCartney, Questlove, Metallica's Lars Ulrich and more. Michael McKean reprises his role as St Hubbins alongside Christopher Guest as Nigel Tufnel and Harry Shearer as Derek Smalls, heading up a supporting cast filled with British comedy stars such as Nina Conti, Chris Addison and Kerry Godliman. The film will have the documentary film-maker Marty DiBergi (played by Rob Reiner) following the group as they prepare for a final reunion show. The first trailer was released earlier this week. An accompanying soundtrack album has also been announced. Elton John will appear again on Flower People, while McCartney joins them for Cups and Cakes, and country music couple Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood perform Big Bottom.
