SINGAPORE - Prime Minister Lawrence Wong spoke to South Korea's President Lee Jae-myung on June 30 to congratulate him on his recent election win, in their first call since Mr Lee took office.
During the call, the two leaders agreed to establish a strategic partnership as Singapore and South Korea mark 50 years of diplomatic relations in 2025.
In a Facebook post on June 30, Mr Wong said the relationship between the two countries 'has grown steadily over the decades'.
'We are now upgrading our ties to a Strategic Partnership, to deepen cooperation in key areas of mutual interest,' he added.
'I look forward to continuing our conversation when Korea hosts the Apec meeting later this year.'
The Apec meeting will be held in the city of Gyeongju.
In a news release, the South Korean embassy in Singapore said PM Wong conveyed his warm congratulations on the call and 'expressed his expectations for the development of Korea-Singapore relations, as well as his commitment to cooperation during President Lee's term'.
Mr Lee, meanwhile, 'expressed his gladness' on the cooperation achieved by Singapore and South Korea in various fields since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1975.
This includes politics and security, economy, society and culture and regional and international issues.
The embassy also said that in addition to the establishment of a strategic partnership, Singapore and South Korea agreed to accelerate strategic cooperation in comprehensive areas, including peace and stability on the Korean peninsula, as well as future-oriented sectors such as artificial intelligence and digital technology.
It quoted Mr Lee as saying that he looks forward to PM Wong's attendance at the Apec summit.
PM Wong also expressed his confidence that Korea would successfully host the Apec summit, and suggested that both countries maintain active high-level exchanges on various occasions, the embassy added.

ST PHOTO: CHONG JUN LIANG Seniors can claim $800 SG60 vouchers from July 1; adults to get $600 in vouchers from July 22 SINGAPORE - Singaporean seniors aged 60 and above can now claim $800 worth of SG60 vouchers, while adults aged between 21 and 59 will be able to claim $600 worth of the same vouchers from July 22. Unlike CDC vouchers, which are issued to households, these one-off vouchers to celebrate Singapore's 60th year of independence are for individual Singaporeans. They are part of a broader SG60 Package announced at Budget 2025 by Prime Minister Lawrence Wong. Seniors can claim their vouchers at from 10am on July 1, while other adults can do so from 10am on July 22. The vouchers can be used at all businesses that accept CDC vouchers and are valid till Dec 31, 2026. In total, some three million adults will get the vouchers, which are estimated to cost the Government a total of $2.02 billion. 'The SG60 vouchers are our way of recognising the contributions of all Singaporeans in our nation-building journey,' said PM Wong in a social media post on July 1. Each person will also receive in the mail an SG60 postcard designed by differently abled artists. The postcard contains a message from PM Wong and a QR code that can be scanned to claim the vouchers. Seniors will get to claim their vouchers first 'in appreciation of their long-standing contributions to Singapore's growth and success', said the Community Development Council in a statement on July 1. This earlier rollout will also ensure that seniors can get dedicated help to claim their vouchers. The claim and spend process for SG60 Vouchers is the same as that of CDC vouchers – upon claiming the vouchers, the individual will receive an SMS link from ' Those who need help to claim their vouchers can get assistance at community centres and clubs, and at SG Digital Community Hubs. In the first two weeks of the launch until July 11, about 200 volunteers from public agencies and schools such as ITE College West, Nanyang Polytechnic, and Tampines Meridian JC will be stationed at selected CCs alongside CDC ambassadors to assist residents. Half of the vouchers – $400 for seniors and $300 for adults – can be used at participating supermarkets, and the other half at participating hawker stalls and heartland merchants. This covers some 23,000 heartland shops and hawkers, and eight supermarket chains that have over 400 outlets all over Singapore. They are Ang Mo Supermarket, Cold Storage, Giant Singapore, Hao Mart, FairPrice, Prime Supermarket, Sheng Siong and U Stars Supermarket. The SG60 vouchers will support Singaporeans in defraying the cost of living pressures, said Senior Minister of State for Trade and Industry, and Culture, Community and Youth, Ms Low Yen Ling told reporters on June 25, at a briefing on the voucher scheme. Around $1 billion worth of SG60 vouchers will also 'go some way (towards) supporting our heartland shops and hawkers in increasing footfall and also sales', she noted. People can find participating merchants at Ms Low, who is also the chairman of the Mayors' Committee, said: 'The 1½ years of validity period (of the vouchers) will give all Singaporeans greater flexibility to pace, use and spend their SG60 vouchers gradually.' The SG60 vouchers are part of a slew of SG60 goodies announced by PM Wong at Budget 2025. Other initiatives include a personal income tax rebate, a gift for babies born this year, and $100 in SG Culture Pass credits for every Singaporean aged 18 and above in 2025. In 2025, Singaporean households also received $300 worth of CDC vouchers in January, and $500 worth of CDC vouchers in May. These are valid till Dec 31, 2025. Taiwan to simulate Chinese invasion in major drill

Mr Lai said in recent years Taiwan has been constantly preparing for a 'war without gun smoke' such as Chinese infiltration and disinformation attacks. PHOTO: REUTERS TAIPEI - Taiwan will simulate a Chinese blockade and invasion of the democratic island in its annual military and civil defence drills next week, as President Lai Ching-te warned on July 1 the island was already facing China's 'war without gun smoke'. The annual Han Kuang exercises starting on July 9 will last for 10 days and mobilise more than 22,000 reservists, both unprecedented in length and scale. Taiwan is facing ramped-up military pressure by China which considers the separately governed island as its own despite Taiwan's strong rejection. Addressing soldiers in a video ahead of Han Kuang, Mr Lai said in recent years Taiwan has been constantly preparing for a 'war without gun smoke' such as Chinese infiltration and disinformation attacks. 'However, there is no need to worry because the democratic, free, and prosperous Taiwan of today is the result of the Taiwanese people's courage, conviction, and action in fighting their way through various challenges, and the unity and resilience of the Taiwanese people has been demonstrated.' Mr Tung Chih-hsing, head of the defence ministry's joint combat planning department, said drill scenarios included 'joint fire attack and the sea ferry of the landing group by the Communist Army' and Taiwan's armed forces will practice building up a 'chain of strikes' with naval and air precision attacks. 'We are demonstrating our determination and ability to defend ourselves with practical actions,' Mr Tung told a press briefing in Taipei, adding the armed forces will upgrade its combat readiness level if China launches 'targeted drills' in response. Civil defence drills will be held alongside Han Kuang, including issuing missile alerts and evacuation drills that will temporarily shut business and suspend traffic in major cities including the capital Taipei. China's Taiwan Affairs Office did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. Mr Lai has since June given three speeches in what will be a series of 10 on 'uniting the country' ahead of a July 26 recall vote for around one quarter of parliament's lawmakers - all from the main opposition Kuomintang (KMT) party. Beijing had angrily rebuked some of Mr Lai's recent remarks as the two capitals clashed over their competing interpretations of history in an escalating war of words over what Beijing views as provocations from Taiwan's government. Civil groups involved in the recall campaign has framed the election as a no-confidence vote against what they see as Beijing-friendly lawmakers who are working to undermine Taiwan's democracy, a position strongly rejected by the KMT. Indonesian annual inflation at 1.87% in June, just above expectations

JAKARTA :Indonesia's annual inflation rate was 1.87 per cent in June, the statistics bureau said on Tuesday, just above market expectations. A Reuters poll of analysts had expected an annual inflation rate of 1.80 per cent in June. Bank Indonesia has a target range of 1.5 per cent to 3.5 per cent for inflation. Core inflation data will be released later on Tuesday. The central bank paused its easing cycle at a policy review last month, but said there was still room to cut rates given moderate inflation and the need to support economic activity.
