8,947 UAPA Cases Filed Between 2018 and 2022, Only 2 Scrapped: Government
Only two cases filed under the stringent anti-terror law, Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, were quashed by courts across the country between 2018 and 2022, Parliament was informed on Wednesday.
In a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai presented data from the latest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report on "Crime in India", which showed that 6,503 individuals were charge-sheeted under the UAPA during the period, while 252 people were convicted for the offences.
The country-wide data presented by the minister showed that two cases were quashed in Kerala in 2022.
Law enforcement agencies arrested a total of 8,947 individuals under the UAPA between 2018 and 2022, with 2,633 arrests in Jammu and Kashmir, followed by 2,162 in Uttar Pradesh.
According to the data, 1,421 arrests were made in the country under the anti-terror law in 2018, 1,948 in 2019, 1,321 in 2020, 1,621 in 2021 and 2,636 in 2022.

Govt. to table private school fee Bill in Monsoon Session: CM
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Saturday said the Delhi government will table a Bill to regulate fee hikes by private schools during the upcoming Monsoon Session of the Assembly, beginning August 4. Amid ongoing protests by parents, the Delhi government had earlier approved a draft of the Bill and proposed bringing an Ordinance, since the Assembly was not in session. Now, it has decided to table the Delhi School Education (Transparency in Fixation and Regulation of Fees) Bill, 2025. 'The Delhi government will table the Bill to regulate fee hikes by private schools in the Monsoon Session of Assembly beginning from August 4,' Ms. Gupta said while addressing the media. The parents' groups, while pointing out issues in the Bill, said that they will send their detailed suggestions to the government on Sunday. Three-level checks A three-level verification will be implemented to regulate fee hikes, according to the Bill seen by The Hindu. First, schools will form an 11-member committee comprising the school management – a management representative and principal – three teachers, five parents from the parent-teacher association, selected by a draw of lots, and a nominee of the Directorate of Education (DoE). A District Fee Appellate Committee will hear appeals against the decisions taken by school-level committees. A similar procedure will be followed with a State-level revision committee, which will be the highest appellate authority. An aggrieved parents' group, which the Bill describes as 15% of the total strength of parents in an affected school, may appeal to the District Fee Appellate Committee within 30 days from the time the fees are approved, against the decisions of school-level committees. The Bill also specifies that if a school is found levying a fee that is not determined in the provisions of the Act, the DoE will direct the school to roll back the fee and refund the excess amount to the parents. The penalty for violators can range between ₹1 lakh and ₹10 lakh. Meanwhile, a fine of ₹50,000 will be levied on schools for harassing students over delayed payment of fees. The Bill also mentions the 10 factors that will determine the fee structure, including the location of the school, infrastructure made available, the education standardof schools, and a reasonable revenue surplus as may be prescribed. Divya Mattey, a parent of a student who studies in Delhi Public School, Dwarka, said, 'It will be difficult to get a minimum of 15% of the parent body to raise a question.' Mr. Mattey said that parents have noted that the penalties might not affect bigger schools, for whom '₹50,000 might be a small amount'. AAP, BJP at odds Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Delhi State president Saurabh Bharadwaj criticised the Bill, saying, 'Until now, even under the 1973 law, if a single parent felt that fees had been unfairly hiked, they could file a complaint with the DoE. Now, that has been scrapped. Under the new law, you'll need a minimum of 15% of parents to raise a complaint. In a school with 3,000 students, that means identifying 450 parents – a near-impossible task.' Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva said, 'It would have been better if Saurabh Bharadwaj had waited until the Bill was tabled in the upcoming session before commenting on it.'

4 of total 16 elections held for vice-president posts won uncontested
NEW DELHI: Four of the total 16 elections held so far to the office of Vice-President of India were won uncontested, three due to rejection of nomination papers of the rival candidates and one due to lack of any opponent. In 1987, Shankar Dayal Sharma was also elected unopposed, but only after the nomination papers filed by 26 other candidates were found to be invalid. There were two contestants in 10 of the Vice-Presidential elections held so far, and three and six contestants in one each. Bhopal: Nearly 10 days after assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Pramod Paawan, 51, died by suicide, police have registered a case against the in charges of two police stations, a constable, and a local resident he accused in a video recorded shortly before his death. No arrests have been made so far. The FIR was filed after a preliminary investigation and legal review of both the video message and a letter written by the deceased on July 22, addressed to the superintendent of police (SP), Datia. In the letter, ASI Paawan made similar allegations of harassment, illegal sand operations, and caste-based abuse. The ASI, who was posted at Godan police station for a year, died by suicide in the early hours of July 22. Just before taking the extreme step, he sent videos to his son and posted them on social media, accusing senior officers and a local sand mafia member of mentally harassing him after he stopped a vehicle involved in illegal sand transportation. In the video, Paawan alleged that the tractor he intercepted belonged to Bablu Yadav, a resident of Godan village, who was allegedly involved in the sand mafia and also operated gambling dens. He claimed that shortly after the vehicle was seized, Godan police station incharge Arvind Singh Bhadoria and constable Roop Narayan Yadav -- allegedly a relative of Bablu Yadav -- had the vehicle released and began harassing him. He also named Thorat police station in charge Hasan, alleging that he too was acting under pressure from Bablu Yadav due to the gambling activities in his jurisdiction. Paawan also stated that he was subjected to caste-based abuse and was being prevented from reaching senior officers. When his son tried to contact him after receiving the videos, Paawan did not respond. The family alerted police, who broke into his govt quarters and found him hanging in his room. Following the incident, SP Datia Suraj Kumar Verma removed Godan police station in charge Bhadoria from his post and assigned the probe to DSP AJK Umesh Garg. Speaking to TOI, DSP Garg said, "A case for abetment to suicide and under relevant sections of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act was registered against the incharges of Godan and Thorat police stations, a constable posted at Godan, and a local named by the deceased in the video, after a detailed probe on Friday night. Arrests are yet to be made."
