CPI-M State Secretary V. Srinivasa Rao on Wednesday alleged that the proposed cargo airport is designed only to benefit influential politicians and realtors of Srikakulam district. Along with CPI-M Srikakulam District president D. Govinda Rao, they led a protest rally in Vankaluru of Vajrapukotturu mandal in Srikakulam district opposing the forcible land acquisition for the cargo airport. He said that the public representatives planned to enhance the value of their lands with the support of realtors with the proposed airport. Mr. Srinivasa Rao said: 'There is a clear hidden agenda behind the proposal cargo airport near Mulapadu seaport. The value of the 4,000 acres of lands will go up, though the airport is not required, since the Bhogapuram airport is set to begin functioning soon.' He expressed concerns that cashew groves in Uddanam region would be affected. Rao criticised the local public representatives for neglecting key irrigation projects like the Vamsadhara, while showing enthusiasm for the cargo airport.
