Culture minister lays foundation stone for Voltaire Library and Museum

Minister of Culture HE Sheikh Abdulrahman bin Hamad Al Thani and Chairman of the Board of the Qatari-French school Voltaire HE Dr Ali bin Fetais Al Marri laid the foundation stone for the Voltaire Library and Museum in Doha on Sunday.
The inauguration ceremony was held at the Voltaire School's Al Waab branch, in the presence of several cultural and diplomatic figures.
In a statement to Qatar News Agency, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Education and Higher Education HE Dr. Ibrahim bin Saleh Al Nuaimi affirmed the ministry's commitment to educational diversity, noting the presence of several French and other international schools in the country.
He emphasised that the creation of the Voltaire Library and Museum will transform the site into a global hub for French culture in Qatar, benefiting students, researchers, and the broader public.
He added that this project represents a modern and innovative model that connects culture with education across all academic levels, contributing to the intellectual development of students and preparing them to be knowledgeable future citizens.
Dr Al Nuaimi also noted the ministry's support for all schools in Qatar, including Voltaire School, and the state's broader interest in launching significant cultural initiatives like this one - expressing hope that similar projects will be replicated in other schools.
Spanning an area of 8,000 square metres within the school campus, the Voltaire Library and Museum is considered a pioneering cultural initiative aimed at preserving the legacy of the French Enlightenment philosopher Voltaire and promoting intellectual dialogue and cross-cultural exchange.
The project will feature a specialised library, reading and research spaces, and a theatre equipped with state-of-the-art sound technology. The museum will also house personal belongings and letters of Voltaire, offering visitors a unique opportunity to explore various facets of his life and intellectual contributions.

MoJ hosts training courses on IP rights protection and combating money laundering
QNA Doha The Legal and Judicial Studies Center at the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) is organising two training courses for several legal professionals from various ministries and government agencies. The courses centre on legal protection of intellectual property (IP) and combating money laundering and terrorism financing in Qatari law. The legal protection of intellectual property course, which began last Sunday and will continue until Thursday, July 10, aims to introduce participants to intellectual property rights and their legal protection under Qatari law and international agreements. It includes two main themes, defined by reference to Law No. 7 of 2002 on the Protection of Copyright and Related Rights, and related laws, agreements, and treaties. The first axis of the two courses addresses the protection of literary and artistic works under Qatari law and international agreements, while the second axis addresses the protection of industrial property under Qatari law and international agreements. The course on combating money laundering and terrorism financing crimes in Qatari law aims to familiarise participants with the general provisions of the law on combating money laundering and terrorism financing and the authorities involved in combating these crimes. It also explains the investigation mechanism and precautionary measures in accordance with the Code of Criminal Procedure, emphasising the role of international cooperation in combating these crimes and outlining the penalties prescribed for them. The course curriculum includes four axes: the first axis includes the general provisions of the law on combating money laundering and terrorism financing; the second axis addresses the investigation mechanism and precautionary measures; the third axis reviews international cooperation and extradition; and the fourth axis tackles the penalties for money laundering and terrorism financing crimes. Commenting on the courses, Director of the Legal and Judicial Studies Center at the Ministry of Justice Dr. Abdullah Hamad Al Khalidi stressed the importance of these specialised training courses in developing the legal skills of legal researchers and specialists in various ministries and government agencies, noting the importance of these training courses in meeting the ministry's needs and aligning with societal demands and technological and scientific advancements. He pointed out that these developments highlight the need to keep pace with methods of protecting intellectual property rights and combating money laundering crimes. Dr. Al Khalidi indicated that the Legal and Judicial Studies Center at the Ministry of Justice, within the framework of the ministry's vision for development and modernization, under the supervision and oversight of Minister of Justice and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs HE Ibrahim bin Ali Al Mohannadi, and the support provided by the minister to the Center to keep pace with the country's comprehensive development process, has developed training programs that keep pace with the progress and modernization witnessed by the country at the level of development programs and plans, particularly in technical fields that serve to develop the country's legal system and advance it to broader horizons. This is in line with the sectoral plans of the Third National Development Strategy and the objectives of Qatar National Vision 2030. He explained that the Legal and Judicial Studies Center at the Ministry of Justice aims to meet the country's training needs and strengthen its local partnerships to meet the training needs of various governmental and semi-governmental institutions in the country. It also works to develop the legal profession and raise the efficiency of its practitioners. Work is underway to design and offer quality programmes and courses that take into account practical and applied aspects, focusing on preparing qualified national cadres in various legal specialties and fields, as well as related fields, by enhancing the specialised technical skills and expertise of legal professionals in various government agencies.

Ukraine's allies launch new $1.17bn reconstruction fund
DPA Rome Kiev's European partners launched a reconstruction fund to help rebuild war-torn Ukraine at an international conference in Rome on Thursday. The fund, which will also be supported by the private sector, is to be used primarily to repair and rebuild the country's energy infrastructure, which has been ravaged by more than three and a half years of war. In addition, the money can be used to support industrial companies and digital data centres. Germany said the new fund, supported by Berlin, Italy, Poland, France and the European Commission, will initially comprise €1 billion ($1.17 billion). Representatives from around 60 countries, as well as international organizations and private companies, are participating in the two-day meeting in the Italian capital. The Rome meeting is the fourth Ukraine recovery conference since February 2022. According to official figures, the four conferences to date have mobilized more than €16 billion. Speaking at the conference, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called for an international 'coalition for recovery' to help rebuild Ukraine. He renewed his request for a Marshall Plan for Ukraine, modelled on the massive investment provided by the United States for Germany and other countries after World War II. German Chancellor Friedrich Merztold Zelensky: 'Our support for your country is unwavering.' Merz also sent a message to US President Donald Trump at the conference, who has made a series of U-turns on his Ukraine policy since returning to the White House in January. 'Stay with us and stay with the Europeans. We are on the same page. And we are looking for a stable political order in this world,' Merz said. French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer are not attending the conference in person. However, Starmer said in London on Thursday that European plans for a peacekeeping force to aid Ukraine once the war ends are now 'mature' after months of planning. French President Emmanuel Macron meanwhile described the so-called coalition of the willing as 'ready to go' once a ceasefire is agreed. Under the coalition plans, troops from France and the UK would be placed in Ukraine, while other countries would provide logistical support, all with the aim of deterring further Russian aggression. European leaders have insisted the arrangement would be dependent upon a US 'security guarantee,' likely in the form of air support, something President Donald Trump has been unwilling to openly say he would provide. Starmer and Macron dialled into a call with allies who make up the coalition from the UK's military headquarters at Northwood in London. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Zelensky joined the call from the Ukraine Recovery Conference in Rome. Repairing the damage done by more than three years of war will cost more than $1 trillion over a 14-year period, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal told the conference in Rome by video link. Ukraine was looking into the creation of two funds to the amount of around $1 trillion. One fund administered by Kiev should be financed by Russian assets seized abroad for $540 billion, and a second for $460 billion would come from private investors, he said. Meanwhile,the number of Ukrainian civilians killed or injured in Russian attacks reached its highest level in three years in June, according to the United Nations, a report from Kiev said.
