Nepal's mountaineering community celebrates 72nd anniversary of Mount Everest conquest
Nepal's mountaineering community celebrated the conquest of the world's highest mountain with a rally of climbers, guides and others who gathered for International Everest Day.
The event Thursday marked the 72nd anniversary of the first summit climb of
Mount Everest
on May 29, 1953 by New Zealander Edmund Hillary and Sherpa guide Tenzing Norgay.
Nepal's minister for culture and tourism led the celebration in the capital, Kathmandu, that included a walk around the city and a gathering at the old palace.
"We are celebrating May 29 as the international Sagarmatha (Everest) day because the world needs to continue to recognise the achievement and contribution of Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay," said Ang Tshering, who runs Kathmandu-based Asian Trekking.
The event was not just a celebration for the mountaineering community but also a festival for Nepal and the world, said Tshering, who has helped hundreds of clients scale the Himalayan peaks.
Nepal contains eight of the highest peaks in the world and every year hundreds of foreign climbers fly to the country in South Asia to tackle the mountains. The climbers hire thousands of people in Nepal to assist their climbs by carrying gear, cooking food and generally taking care of them as they spend weeks in the mountains.

Nepal's government collects money from the climbers through permit fees.
The end of May also marks the end of the popular spring mountaineering season, when climbers finish their adventures and retreat from the peaks before the monsoon season brings foul weather.
"This day is celebrated also to mark the end of the climbing season where we gather climbers and the community," Jiban Ghimire of Shangri-La Nepal Trek said.
According to Nepal's Department of Mountaineering, 468 foreign climbers from 57 countries received permits to climb Everest by the end of May, along with a roughly equal number of Nepalese mountain guides.
Many were able to scale the peak, but officials were still working to verify how many reached the 8,849-metre (29,032-foot) summit. Climbers must report to the department with proof they reached the summit and cleared their garbage before they are issued the official certificate.
Famed Sherpa guide Kami Rita reached the Everest summit for the 31st time Tuesday, breaking his own record for the most climbs to the top of the famed mountain.

The majestic Talatal Ghar, a seven-storied palace complex that served as the military base of the Ahom army, will soon get a similar facelift. The Kareng Ghar, another architectural marvel that functioned as the royal palace, is also slated for illumination, along with the serene Sivasagar Pukhuri (Lake) and the sacred Shiva Dol temple. "These monuments represent our glorious past and the advanced civilisation that flourished in Assam centuries ago. The illumination project will help younger generations connect with their heritage, while attracting tourists who appreciate the grandeur of Ahom architecture," Garg added. Morjim turtle nesting site faced threat from illegal beach shacks last season
Panaji: The forest department's marine range forest officer reported that a number of violations were carried out by illegally operating shacks at the Olive Ridley turtle nesting site at Morjim during the last tourist season. Subsequently, an inspection was conducted by experts from the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA), which confirmed that two shacks were illegally erected in the area. The inspection report states that the violations included the setting up of two ground floor wooden structures as shacks, two metal fabricated toilets, 38 beach beds covered with 13 temporary sheds, 12 beach beds covered with umbrellas, and eight uncovered beach beds. Morjim is one of only four Olive Ridley turtle nesting sites in Goa. The turtle nesting season coincides with the peak tourist season in Goa from Nov to Feb. Although a part of the beach is protected through fencing to prevent disturbance to the turtle nests, during the last two nesting seasons, turtles were also reported laying eggs outside the fenced area, with nearly 100 eggs in each nest. 'Recently, there have also been a couple of incidents of cars being driven on this stretch of Morjim beaches by tourists,' said a local. Based on National Green Tribunal's orders, the turtle nesting sites in Goa were declared silence zones in Dec 2020, with strict regulation of tourism activities. This has led to an increase in nesting over the last couple of years. During the recent season, 18,243 eggs were laid along North Goa's coast, a majority of them in Morjim and Mandrem. However, tourism has also continued to grow manifold simultaneously. Meanwhile, the GCZMA will carry out hearings on the violations in Aug. 'The violating shacks have already been dismantled after the last season ended,' said a local. Bhopal loses Haj embarkation point tag, pilgrims to fly from Indore
Bhopal: The state capital faces a significant change in Haj pilgrimage arrangements, losing its status as an embarkation point. Direct flights to Saudi Arabia from Bhopal will not operate next year. Indore stands as the only departure point among 17 designated cities across India. The direct Haj flight service from Bhopal to Saudi Arabia began in 2010. Pilgrims must now travel to Indore to access direct flights to Mecca-Medina, as it remains the sole departure point in the state. Approximately 8,500 people from the state undertook the Haj pilgrimage last year. The revised arrangement particularly affects pilgrims from central and eastern Madhya Pradesh. Residents from Vidisha, Raisen, Sehore, and Hoshangabad districts, who previously benefited from Bhopal's accessibility, now face additional travel requirements. According to the State Haj Committee, nearly 2,000 pilgrims from Bhopal and neighbouring areas must now travel 200 kilometres to reach Indore. The total number of pilgrims from MP was 8,500.
