Mohamed Salah 'broke down crying' in dressing room after harsh double punishment

Ammon News - John Obi Mikel has spoken out about the time Jose Mourinho brought Mohamed Salah to tears. The former Chelsea star defended his former manager's tough approach as a means of challenging his squad.
'The Special One' is known for his stringent methods and high expectations, which have frequently led to success. However, for Salah, his Stamford Bridge stay ended in disappointment, only to later achieve stardom at Liverpool.
Ex-Blues midfielder Mikel recounted a poignant moment from a 2014 clash against Norwich City when Mourinho's harsh words during a half-time substitution caused Salah to cry, signalling a turning point in their rapport.
Speaking on That Peter Crouch Podcast, Mikel began by praising Mourinho, saying: "Fantastic guy, amazing. Not just [as] a coach, but a human being as well.
"He's someone you can speak to, someone you can connect with. But [he] obviously has his ways of trying to get the best out of players.
"He did that with Mo Salah when he had a go at him in the dressing room, and Mo Salah started crying, and he took him off," said Mikel.
"Sometimes when you have a go at players, you just have a go and take them off! Or you have a go and let them go back into the game and try to correct whatever mistake it was. But sometimes he does that and tells you, 'You're not going back in.' It's a double whammy, isn't it?"
Salah's less-than-stellar performance that day was partly attributed to being played out of position in midfield. Following his substitution, Eden Hazard, his replacement, failed to make a significant impact as the match ended in a goalless draw.
The Egyptian winger's time at Chelsea was short-lived. After making only a handful of appearances, he was loaned out to Fiorentina in February 2015. This marked the beginning of the end of his first stint in English football. The Mirror

Fluminense shock Inter 2-0 to reach Club World Cup quarter-finals

Ammon News - Fluminense reached the Club World Cup quarter-finals with a stunning 2–0 win over Inter Milan as German Cano's early goal and substitute Hercules' stoppage-time strike toppled the Champions League runners-up in sweltering heat on Monday. Coach Renato's decision to line up a three-man defense paid off, catching Inter off guard and leaving the 2023 Copa Libertadores champions largely untroubled throughout the match. 'I put it in their heads that it would work. Inter is a great team. They have much more money than us, but on the field it's 11 against 11,' Renato told DAZN. 'The team believed, fought, and stayed focused for the 90 minutes.' Fluminense struck after three minutes when Cano pounced on a deflected cross and headed in from close range, putting the ball through goalkeeper Yann Sommer's legs for a dream start. Inter dominated possession, but Fluminense created the better chances, with Colombian forward Jhon Arias causing all sorts of trouble for the Italian side's defense and Sommer. Ignacio thought he had doubled their lead in the 39th minute as he nodded in from close range after a series of headers in the box, but his effort was ruled out for offside. The Italians pushed for an equalizer after the break but were frustrated by a well-organized defense, while Stefan de Vrij missed a glorious chance after Lautaro Martinez set him up in the six-yard box after 69 minutes. The 44-year-old Fluminense keeper Fabio also had a stellar performance, pulling off some key saves including denying substitute Sebastiano Esposito with his feet before Martinez struck the post late on. Hercules sealed the win for Fluminense three minutes into added time, calmly slotting home from the edge of the box to send the Brazilians through to a last-eight clash with either Manchester City or Al Hilal on Friday in Orlando. 'The coach told us it was going to be a very difficult game, we knew that,' midfielder Hercules said. 'But we were very focused on the game, that's what we work for. And that's it. The result is there.'

Guardiola left to rue missed opportunities as Manchester City exit Club World Cup

Ammon News - Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola was left to rue his side's inability to capitalize on a host of first-half chances as the Premier League side suffered a shock elimination from the Club World Cup against Saudi Arabia's Al-Hilal on Monday. Marcos Leonardo scored twice, including the 112th minute winner, as the Riyadh-based outfit won 4-3 in extra-time in Orlando with the first-half performance of goalkeeper Yassine Bounou proving pivotal in Al-Hilal's win. "The level in this competition is a World Cup," said Guardiola, who led City to the Club World Cup title in 2023. "The only regret I have is that we allowed them to run a little bit more than expected. "Against a team that defended so deep, the wingers have been brilliant. The chances that we had in many, many departments. Bounou made a lot of saves and, in the end, you have to score, you have to be clinical." City had taken a ninth minute lead through Bernardo Silva but a string of saves from Bounou in what remained of the opening 45 minutes kept the Saudis in contention. Leonardo and Malcom scored inside the first six minutes of the second half to turn the tables on Guardiola's side before Erling Haaland levelled in the 55th minute, taking the game into extra-time. Kalidou Koulibaly's header put Al-Hilal back in front, only for Phil Foden to equalise again for City, and Leonardo eventually killed off the Premier League side eight minutes from the end of extra-time. The win takes Al-Hilal through to a quarter-final meeting with Brazil's Fluminense while City return to England. "We would have loved to continue, it's not easy to be here once every four years," said Guardiola. "The team still has that feeling, that the team is doing well. But we go home and now it's time to rest, to refresh our minds and come back for next season." Reuters
