Delhi University's EC clears all curriculum changes amid faculty dissent
The revisions follow recommendations by the standing committee on academic affairs and had earlier received assent from the Academic Council (AC).
Departments affected include Psychology, Sociology, and History. In Psychology, topics such as sexual orientation, dating apps, caste and religious identity, Kashmir, and the Israel-Palestine conflict were reportedly marked for removal. In their place, the committee proposed the inclusion of the Mahabharata and Bhagavad Gita to explore the 'psychology of peace.'
'After considering the recommendations made in the DU Academic Council meeting held on May 10, the curriculum of various departments and programmes were also approved by the EC,' said a university official, requesting anonymity.
The standing committee had earlier cleared these revisions over three meetings on May 2, 6, and 8. However, those meetings were marked by dissent from faculty members, including department heads, who alleged interference and a lack of disciplinary expertise on the committee.
Mithuraaj Dhusiya, an elected EC member, submitted a dissent note during Friday's meeting, criticising the process.
'The conduct of the three meetings… in the run-up to the AC meeting clearly undermined the autonomy of the departments. The university officials, none of whom have expertise in disciplines like Psychology, Philosophy, Sociology and History, directed HoDs of these departments to make changes in various papers which are arbitrary, unacademic and out of sync with the overall learning objectives,' the note read.
The EC also addressed the contentious issue of determining teacher seniority within departments. DU clarified in a statement that when relative qualifications are equal, seniority will now be based on age. If age is also identical, it will be determined using the Academic Performance Indicator (API) score.
However, the proposed reliance on API scores drew criticism from faculty.
'DU is trying to use the API score to determine seniority of teachers in case of a tie between teachers across categories. It is pertinent to mention here that the selection of teachers across colleges and the University departments did not happen as per API score. The final selection of candidates happened because of 100% weightage given to the selection committee,' said a DU Teachers' Association member, Rudrashish Chakraborty.
Other decisions approved at the meeting include the introduction of a BSc in Nuclear Medicine Technology at Army Hospital (R&R), Delhi Cantt, under the Faculty of Medical Sciences. Additionally, the MA Journalism programme will now be jointly offered by the Hindi and English departments.

Iran signals shift in cooperation with IAEA after war with Israel
Iran's 12-day war with Israel last month, sparked by an Israeli bombing campaign that hit military and nuclear sites as well as residential areas, rattled its already shaky relationship with the UN nuclear watchdog read more A satellite overview shows the Fordow Fuel Enrichment Facility, amid the Iran-Israel conflict, near Qom, Iran, June 29, 2025. Maxar Technologies/Handout via Reuters Iran said Saturday its cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency 'will take on a new form', expressing a desire for a diplomatic solution to resolve concerns over its nuclear programme. Iran's 12-day war with Israel last month, sparked by an Israeli bombing campaign that hit military and nuclear sites as well as residential areas, rattled its already shaky relationship with the UN nuclear watchdog. The attacks began days before a planned meeting between Tehran and Washington aimed at reviving nuclear negotiations, which have since stalled. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Saturday that Iran's cooperation with the IAEA 'has not stopped, but will take on a new form', after the Islamic republic formally ended cooperation with the UN watchdog in early July. Iran has blamed the IAEA in part for the June attacks on its nuclear facilities, which Israel says it launched to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon – an ambition Tehran has repeatedly denied. The United States, which had been in talks with Iran since April 12, joined Israel in carrying out its own strikes on June 22, targeting Iranian nuclear facilities at Fordo, Isfahan and Natanz. Araghchi said requests to monitor nuclear sites 'will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis… taking into account safety and security issues', and be managed by Iran's Supreme National Security Council. 'Assurances' In early July, a team of IAEA inspectors left Iran to return to the organisation's headquarters in Vienna after Tehran suspended cooperation. The talks were aimed at regulating Iran's nuclear activites in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions. Before agreeing to any new meeting, 'we are examining its timing, its location, its form, its ingredients, the assurances it requires', said Araghchi, who also serves as Iran's lead negotiator. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD He said that any talks would focus only on Iran's nuclear activities, not its military capabilities. 'If negotiations are held… the subject of the negotiations will be only nuclear and creating confidence in Iran's nuclear programme in return for the lifting of sanctions,' he told diplomats in Tehran. 'No other issues will be subject to negotiation.' Araghchi also warned that reimposing UN sanctions could eliminate Europe's role in the process. Enrichment 'Such measures would signify the end of Europe's role in the Iranian nuclear dossier,' Araghchi said. A clause in the 2015 nuclear agreement, which US President Donald Trump withdrew from during his first term, allows for UN sanctions to be reimposed if Iran is found to be in breach of the deal. Araghchi stressed that any new nuclear deal must uphold Iran's right under the Non-Proliferation Treaty to enrich uranium for peaceful purposes. 'I would like to emphasise that in any negotiated solution, the rights of the Iranian people on the nuclear issue, including the right to enrichment, must be respected,' he said. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'We will not have any agreement in which enrichment is not included.' Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said at the BRICS summit in Rio on Monday that Moscow would remain a committed ally of Iran and support its nuclear programme. 'Russia has technological solutions for uranium depletion and is ready to work with Iran in this field,' Lavrov said, as reported by Russian state news outlet TASS.

Vijayasai Reddy skips SIT appearance in liquor scam case
Vijayawada: Former Rajya Sabha MP Vijayasai Reddy , who was scheduled to appear before the Special Investigation Team (SIT) on Saturday in connection with the ongoing alleged liquor scam investigation, informed officials that he would not be able to attend the inquiry today due to pre-scheduled engagements. According to official sources, he conveyed his inability to attend and assured the SIT that he would communicate a new date for appearance either tomorrow or the day after. This marks the second summons issued to the former MP in connection with the case. Vijayasai Reddy earlier appeared before the SIT on April 18, when he was questioned for several hours. During that interrogation, sources say he provided names of key individuals allegedly involved in the scam, some of whom are believed to have played central roles in the execution and cover-up of the illegal operations. Following the former MP's statements during the April round of questioning, SIT officials intensified their investigation and subsequently arrested 11 individuals linked to the case. All of them are currently in judicial custody. On the same day he was expected to appear before investigators, Vijayasai Reddy posted a cryptic message on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), quoting a verse from the Bhagavad Gita. The post roughly translated to, "Those who act must inevitably bear the consequences," triggering speculation about the timing of the message amid his involvement in the liquor scam probe. The SIT is continuing its investigation into the multi-crore scam, which allegedly involved a network of political figures, bureaucrats, and private contractors engaged in irregularities related to liquor procurement and distribution during the previous administration.

'Attempt to damage ties': Iran denounces social media post on Kashmir
The clarification came in response to an account on X ('Daily Iran News') -- with 400,000 followers and falsely linked to Iran -- claiming Kashmir belongs to Pakistan and Taiwan to China New Delhi A post on X (formerly Twitter) by an account claiming to represent Iran has sparked controversy after it stated that Kashmir is part of Pakistan and Taiwan is part of China. The Iranian Embassy in New Delhi, on Saturday, firmly dismissed the post, calling the account 'fake' and aimed at harming relations between Iran and India. In an official statement, the embassy said, 'Some fake channels, under the name of Iran, are attempting to damage Iran-India relations. This account does not belong to Iran.' The statement was accompanied by maps of both India and China. Some fake channels, under the name of Iran, are attempting to damage Iran-India relations. This account does not belong to Iran. ???????? ???????? — Iran in India (@Iran_in_India) July 12, 2025 The account, called 'Daily Iran News', has nearly 400,000 followers and frequently posts provocative content on global political issues. On Friday, it shared a post that read: 'Taiwan is part of #China & Kashmir is part of #Pakistan. Do you agree?' According to media reports, multiple fake accounts operating in the name of Iran on social media are being run from Pakistan. India-Iran ties remain strong India and Iran have historically maintained strong ties, despite occasional remarks by Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei on Kashmir, an issue India views as a domestic matter. In June, Iran opened its airspace to facilitate India's evacuation efforts during the Iran-Israel conflict. Shortly after, during US strikes on Iranian nuclear sites, Tehran reached out to India, which was among the first nations it contacted. Some fake channels, under the name of Iran, are attempting to damage Iran-India relations. These accounts do not belong to Iran. ???????? ???????? — Iran in India (@Iran_in_India) July 12, 2025 While Ayatollah Khamenei has voiced criticism over Kashmir and the treatment of Muslims in India, Tehran has never acted against Indian interests. India, in turn, continues to invest in key infrastructure like the Chabahar Port and values Iran's strategic location near Afghanistan and Pakistan. Despite India strengthening its defence and technology ties with Israel under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, it has kept steady diplomatic engagement with Iran, even under US sanctions. After Khamenei's comments last year, India expressed its displeasure and has since continued efforts for direct communication with Iranian leadership. Iran's consistent support for China on Taiwan On Taiwan, Iran has consistently supported China's position. Tehran regularly criticises US actions that promote Taiwan's international presence, considering them threats to China's territorial claims. Iran's relationship with China is shaped by economic necessity. Isolated from Western markets due to sanctions, Iran has pursued a 'Look East' policy, making China its main trading partner, oil importer, and investor. China, in turn, views Iran as a key supplier of energy and an essential route in its 'New Silk Road' initiative that links Asia with Europe via the Middle East.
