She said this includes introducing the Progressive Rukun Tetangga Area (KRT) concept, which involves community-based economic projects aimed at increasing household income, particularly among young people.
'This year marks the 50th anniversary of RT. What started as a community safety team has now grown to include initiatives such as the Unity Squad and patrol units, among others.
'Therefore, we are encouraging more young people to join RT so they can play an active role within their communities,' she told reporters after officiating the Terengganu-level Unity Week celebration at Arena Square here today.
Also present was state Welfare, Women's Development, Family and National Unity Committee chairman Maliaman Kassim.
Saraswathy said there are currently 8,565 KRT nationwide, including more than 500 in Terengganu, serving as the backbone of the government's efforts to foster community unity.
She said this reflects the growing spirit of volunteerism and consensus among Malaysians.
'RTs also play an important role in addressing issues or tensions within communities, including incidents that go viral on social media. They consistently work together with authorities such as the Royal Malaysia Police to help defuse such situations,' she said.

The youth wing's chief, Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden argued that such a project represents a misplaced priority at a time when Malaysia is grappling with subsidy reductions and a worsening fiscal deficit. He highlighted concerns that the project, despite an estimated cost of RM4 billion, could incur a substantially higher financial burden if funded through a private finance initiative (PFI). The PFI model, he noted, has historically drawn criticism for potentially masking a government's true debt obligations in official records. Afnan called on the administration to disclose the precise cost of the project, including annual commitments stretching over the next 20 to 25 years. "What tangible benefits can the people expect, especially the younger generation who will inherit the weight of this debt? "Why is such a extravagant project being prioritised when funding for education, healthcare, food security and social welfare continues to diminish?" Afnan questioned in a statement today. The Alor Setar MP also raised objections to the involvement of Putrajaya Holdings Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Petronas, as the project's primary driver. He pointed out that this comes at a time when the national oil and gas corporation faces declining profits, workforce reductions and increasing investment pressures across various sectors. "The government should be safeguarding Petronas, not transforming the company into a 'political ATM' to finance elitist projects that do not offer equitable commercial returns," Afnan added. Calling for an immediate halt to the Putrajaya government quarters project, Afnan demanded that a comprehensive cost-benefit analysis be presented in Parliament. "If the government insists on proceeding, it will become evident that the true purpose behind Kota Madani is not national advancement, but rather the pursuit of political ambition and the legacy of a particular individual," he concluded. On June 26, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim officially launched the Kota Madani project, conceived as a smart city initiative designed to be people-centric and environmentally sustainable. Reports indicate the project will operate on a build, lease, maintain and transfer model, meaning the government will not directly bear maintenance costs but will pay through a long-term lease arrangement. The initial phase of development, spanning 41.28 hectares in Precinct 19, is slated to commence in September 2025 and is projected for completion by the end of 2027. This phase will comprise 10,000 high-density vertical residential units, designed to accommodate over 30,000 residents.

Malaysia Leads ASEAN Push for Regional Peace and Human Rights Advancement
WORLD KUALA LUMPUR, July 1 (Bernama) -- ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) on Tuesday launched its Thematic Study on the Right to Peace, marking a significant milestone in ASEAN's move towards implementing a rights-based approach to peace agenda. In a statement, the Foreign Ministry said the study also offers key policy recommendations to support ASEAN initiatives to respect human rights and implement practices to secure regional peace and security in line with the ASEAN Community Vision 2025. It also reaffirmed that the right to peace is a fundamental human right, and is essential for sustainable development, human dignity, and the enjoyment of all other rights. Speaking at the launch of the study, Malaysia's representative to AICHR and AICHR Chair 2025, Edmund Bon Tai Soon, commended the study, describing it as a springboard for actions that strengthen ASEAN's broad commitment to peace and respect for human rights. "This thematic study is very important as there are still many regional problems and conflict in ASEAN and also globally. "Spillover conflict issues that become region-centric cannot always be considered internal affairs of ASEAN Member States. This is reflected in the ASEAN Community Vision 2045 and ASEAN's initiatives on conflict prevention, as well as civilian and human rights protection.' He added that ASEAN is working to address regional and international challenges, including the situation in Gaza and situational conflicts within the region, by taking positions to improve conditions on the ground. Meanwhile, AICHR will organise a six-part AICHR Regional Training Programme on Human Rights on July 2 to build capacity of ASEAN officials in conflict prevention and to promote sustainable peace through the practical application of human rights principles. The programme, tilted 'Workshops on Intersection Between Conflict and Human Rights: Pathways and Approaches to Peace in ASEAN' also aims to strengthen ASEAN's collective ability to implement proactive peacebuilding strategies.

Govt to table amendments to Peaceful Assembly Act in next Parliament sitting
KUALA LUMPUR: Amendments to the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 will be tabled in the next parliamentary sitting which begins this month. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the amendments will be to Section 11 of the act which requires organisers of peaceful assemblies to seek the consent of venue owners for such gatherings to take place. "The Madani government holds high the princicples of democracy and the supremacy of the Constitution by ensuring that the rights of the people to gather peacefully are protected, "Since 2023, more than 10,000 assemblies have been held and 98 per cent of them took place without any restrictions. In 2024, this went up to 99 per cent. "This shows that Malaysians are growing more mature in using their rights to assemble peacefully and responsibly," he said in a statement. Saifuddin said the prime minister, as the leader of the government's reform agenda, had announced the cabinet's decision to implement a moratorium on any prosecution under Section 9(5) of the Peaceful Assembly Act which requires organisers to inform police of any gathering five days in advance. "This was an initial step towards a comprehensive reform of laws related to the right to assemble. In line with this commitment, the Home Ministry will also table amendments to Section 11 of the act in the upcoming parliamentary sitting," he said. Saifuddin's statement comes in the wake of the Federal Court decision earlier today that Section 9(5) of the act was unconstitutional. He said the ministry acknowledges the apex court's decision and would scrutinise it for further action. "This includes considering proposed amendments to the affected legal provisions, so that they align with the requirements of the Constitution and are consistent with the decision of the nation's highest court. "The Madani government will continue to ensure a balance between individual freedoms and the need to need to maintain public order and safety. "It is a priority for the government to ensure that every right of the people, guaranteed by the Constitution, can be exercised in a peaceful, orderly, and responsible manner."
