Five people have been charged almost two years on from the bikie-linked fatal shooting of Robert Issa in a Melbourne shopping centre car park.
Mr Issa, 27, had been sitting in a white Mercedes in Craigieburn Central shopping centre car park when gunmen sprayed the car with bullets, killing Mr Issa and wounding his friend Eric Catanese in early October 2023.
A burnt out Black Range Rover was found in the nearby suburb Westmeadows a short time later. Homicide Squad on Thursday arrested five men as part of their investigation into the fatal shooting of Robert Issa in a Craigieburn carpark in 2023. Supplied Credit: Supplied
On Thursday morning, Victoria Police took a 29-year-old Kew man, a 31-year-old Mickleham man, a 33-year-old Pascoe Vale man and two 26-year-old Fawkner men into custody.
Following interviews, all five men were charged with murder, attempted murder and criminal damage by fire.
The reasons behind Mr Issa's killing remain unclear.
However, he was thought to be closely associated with a figure linked to the Comanchero bikie gang, who was suspected of playing a role in a string of retaliatory firebombings targeting businesses and residences throughout Melbourne, the Herald Sun reported. Detective Inspector Dean Thomas said on Thursday the men arrested were likely only 'foot soldiers' and those responsible for planning the attack remained at large.
'We believe these men were likely the foot soldiers who carried out the murder, but we believe there are also people further up the chain who are responsible for ordering this attack,' he said.
'This shooting was incredibly violent and it played out in a shopping centre carpark in the middle of the afternoon on a Saturday.'
Detective Inspector Thomas said despite the arrests, the investigation was not over.
'We will do everything we can to hold accountable every single person involved in this shooting,' he said.
'You know you are part of that chain, now is the time for you to come and speak to us, because this may be your last opportunity.'
The five men were due to appear at Melbourne Magistrates Court on Thursday afternoon.

$1m reward to identify puppet masters of underworld hit

Police are setting their sights on the masterminds of an underworld hit, offering a $1 million reward for information. Robert Issa, 27, was gunned down at Craigieburn Central Shopping Centre in Melbourne's north almost two years ago. Four men wearing balaclavas surrounded Mr Issa's Mercedes SUV in October 2023, firing multiple shots into the passenger side and rear windows. He was killed and another man, a now 30-year-old from Hadfield, was taken to hospital in a serious condition. A black Range Rover was later found burnt out in Westmeadows. Five men were arrested in raids across Melbourne's north and east on Thursday and each charged with murder, attempted murder and criminal damage by fire. Detective Inspector Dean Thomas described the men as "foot soldiers", with police still working to identify those further up the chain who ordered, financed and organised the alleged hit. The murder allegedly involved more than just those in the car, Mr Thomas said. "We know there are others out there and we will take every step in this investigation to identify them," he said. "We have already made clear we will do everything we can to identify every single person involved in both the planning and the execution, and now there are one million reasons to come forward with any information you may have." Police allege Mr Issa had connections to several organised crime groups and suspect the shooting may be linked to Melbourne's long-running illegal tobacco wars. The Director of Public Prosecutions will consider granting indemnification from prosecution to anybody who provides information on the identity of the main offender or offenders.

Synagogue targeted with graffiti by man in Scream mask

A man wearing a mask from the horror movie Scream sprayed offensive graffiti on a historic synagogue in South Yarra five times since March. CCTV footage shows a lone man wearing a white mask approach the Melbourne Hebrew Congregation in South Yarra on an e-scooter before vandalising the synagogue. He then fled on the scooter. Police allege he scrawled graffiti on the synagogue on March 11, June 21, June 22, July 22 and July 30. In the July incidents, he wore a Scream mask, police said, but on other occasions, he wore different face coverings, such as a bandana. 'There is absolutely no place at all in our society for hate-based behaviour,' a Victoria Police spokesperson said. Loading Speaking to The Age after his synagogue was spray-painted with 'Iran is Da Bomb' (during Israel's war on Iran) and 'Free Palestine' in June, Rabbi Shlomo Nathanson said it was 'un-Australian'. 'There's going to be a wide variety of opinions as to the politics in the Middle East and where things stand from one extreme to the other, but to translate that into violent acts and antisemitism and criminal activity here in Australia is un-Australian,' Nathanson said. The synagogue is the oldest Jewish congregation in Melbourne, according to its website, and was formed in 1841.
