Achuthanandan died on Monday at the age of 101.
New Delhi, Jul 21 (PTI) Left leaders paid rich tributes to former Kerala chief minister V S Achuthanandan on Monday, with CPI(M) general secretary M A Baby saying the veteran leader's demise marks the 'end of an era'.
'Comrade V S Achuthanandan's passing marks the end of an era,' Baby said.

'He had to quit school. Working at a coir factory, he was initiated into the trade union movement and joined the Communist Party at a young age,' Baby said.
'Synonymous with the Punnapra-Vayalar uprising, he was brutally tortured by the police. He was the last surviving member of the 32 who walked out of CPI National Council in 1964 and founded the CPI(M). His 101 years were a saga of struggle for justice and equality,' the CPI(M) general secretary added.
Paying homage to the veteran leader, CPI general secretary D Raja said Achuthanandan's 'principled life, simplicity, and dedication to the people will remain an inspiration to the coming generations'.
'Comrade Achuthanandan's political journey, spanning more than eight decades, stands as a testament to unwavering commitment to the ideals of socialism, secularism, and people's rights,' Raja said.
He said Achuthanandan was widely respected across party lines and by the people of Kerala.
'The CPI extends its deep condolences to his family, friends, admirers and to the CPI(M),' he added.
CPI(ML) Liberation general secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya also paid tributes to the former Kerala chief minister.
'Just got the news of the passing of Comrade V S Achuthanandan, former P B member of CPI(M) and CM of Kerala, and one of the tallest leaders of the communist movement. Our deepest respect to the legendary leader and condolences to his family and comrades,' Bhattacharya said in a post on X.
The CPI(M), in a statement, called Achuthanandan an outstanding leader and a veteran of the country's Communist movement.
'The Politburo of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) dips its red banner in salute to V S Achuthanandan. It conveys its heartfelt condolences to his wife, son and daughter,' the statement said.
Achuthanandan, one of India's most-respected Left leaders and a key figure in Kerala's political history, died in a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram while undergoing treatment following a cardiac arrest. PTI AO RC

Thailand-Cambodia Clashes: Toll Rises, Both Sides Blame Each Other For Preventing Ceasefire

World Tens of thousands of people living along the Southeast Asian neighbours' border have fled the violence. Thai residents evacuate from their homes following clashes between Thai and Cambodian soldiers in Sisaket province, Thailand, July 25, 2025. Photo: AP/PTI. New Delhi: Thailand and Cambodia were engaged in military hostilities along their border for the second day on Friday (July 25), with deaths reported on both sides and tens of thousands of people fleeing the violence. Thailand's army said six soldiers were killed on Thursday and Friday. Reuters reports that the total toll in the country is 19, with a Cambodian provincial official reporting one death on their side. Both sides have blamed each other for initiating the hostilities, which occur against the backdrop of tensions along their long-disputed border. The situation escalated after a Cambodian soldier was killed in an exchange of fire with Thai troops while he dug trenches along the border in May. Earlier this week, a landmine explosion had injured several Thai soldiers, following which the two countries expelled each other's ambassadors in tit-for-tat moves and downgraded diplomatic ties. While Anwar Ibrahim, Prime Minister of Malaysia – which currently chairs the ASEAN bloc that Thailand and Cambodia are members of – said he spoke to the Thai acting prime minister and his Cambodian opposite number calling for a ceasefire, both those leaders on Friday laid the blame at the other side for continuing hostilities. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet said on Friday that he agreed with Ibrahim's proposal for a ceasefire and had heard from him that Thai Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai too was on board, but that the Thai side ultimately 'reversed their position', choosing instead to 'wait for a later date'. Meanwhile, Thailand's foreign ministry said on Friday evening that although Bangkok 'fully agrees with' Ibrahim's proposal and 'will consider it', 'Cambodian forces have continued their indiscriminate attacks on Thai territory', showing Phnom Penh's 'lack of good faith'. Bangkok said in a statement on Friday afternoon that 'the current situation is a dispute between the governments and armed forces of both countries and not between the people'. 'This is not a declaration of war but merely a clash along the border in order to protect our sovereignty and territorial integrity and to respond to the aggression,' it added. The UN Security Council was scheduled to discuss the conflict in New York at 3 pm local time (12:30 am on Saturday Indian time) in a closed emergency meeting. Following the eruption of hostilities on Thursday, over 58,000 people fled from villages to temporary shelters, per the Thai public health ministry. Cambodian authorities said more than 23,000 people evacuated from the border region. Thailand has declared martial law in eight districts bordering Cambodia. With inputs from DW. Look at your own country: Bombay High Court raps CPI(M) over Gaza protest petition

The Bombay High Court on Friday (July 25, 2025) dismissed a petition filed by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the CPI challenging the Mumbai Police's decision to deny permission for a protest at Azad Maidan against the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The court observed that the Indian political organisations should prioritise domestic issues over international conflicts. A Division Bench comprising Justices Ravindra Ghuge and Gautam Ankhad pulled up the petitioners for focusing on matters outside the country and said, 'Our country has enough issues to deal with. We do not want anything like this. I am sorry to say that you are short-sighted. You are looking at Gaza and Palestine while neglecting what's happening here. Why don't you do something for your own country? Look at your own country. Be patriots. People say they are patriots, but this is not patriotism. Show patriotism for the citizens of our own country first,' the Bench remarked sharply during the hearing. Senior advocate Mihir Desai representing CPI(M), informed the Bench that on June 13, 2025, his clients submitted an application seeking permission from the Azad Maidan police station to hold a peaceful protest and gathering in Azad Maidan to show solidarity with the people of Gaza, who are currently in the midst of a genocide, by calling for a ceasefire. On June 17, denying permission to the All India Peace and Solidarity Foundation (AIPSF) that police informed them that the permission to protest was being denied in exercise of their powers under Section 168 of the Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) and Section 68 of the Maharashtra Police Act, 1951. Mr. Desai informed the Bench that the political parties have time and again taken up several causes that has concerned India and have been conducting health and education camps. The Court noted that the CPI(M), being a registered as Indian political party, should ideally be engaging with local civic concerns. 'You are a registered party in India. Your party could have taken up issues like garbage dumping, pollution, drainage, or flooding. Why are you not protesting on these issues? We are only giving examples. Instead, you want to protest over something happening thousands of miles away and showing concern for Palestine and Gaza,' the Bench observed. The petitioners stated that the Indian government's stance and support of Palestine as a State, has been an integral part of the nation's foreign policy. In 1974, India became the first Non-Arab State to recognize Palestine Liberation Organisation as the sole and legitimate representative of the Palestinian people. In 1988, India was also one of the first countries to recognize Palestine as a State. In April 2024, India voted in favour of the Human Rights Council Resolution on the Right of the Palestinian people to self-determination. Moreover, India is a State signatory to the Genocide Convention, 1948, and the protest which was held to condemn violence and genocide in Gaza, can in no way termed to be the foreign policy of the India State. Mr. Desai further argued that citizens have a fundamental right to protest at designated places and that disagreements with the government's foreign policy cannot be grounds to stifle dissent. He also contended that mere apprehensions of law-and-order issues, without concrete evidence, should not override constitutional freedoms. He also clarified that the protest has nothing to do with Operation Sindoor or India's border relations with neighbouring countries. CPI(M) issues statement Rejecting the petition, the court observed, 'You don't know the dust it could kick up. Whether to take a side for Palestine or Israel is their (Govt of India) work, why do you want to create such a situation that the country has to take sides on this? Why do you want to do this? It's obvious, going by the party you represent, that you don't understand what this could do to the foreign affairs of the country.' The CPI(M) has strongly condemned the Bombay High Court's remarks while dismissing its petition challenging the denial of permission to protest against the Gaza conflict. Calling the Court's comments unconstitutional and politically biased, the CPI(M) criticised the bench for questioning its patriotism and aligning with the Central government's foreign policy stance. 'It is regrettable to say that the Bench appears to be completely unaware of the constitutional provisions that empower political parties or the history of our country and the support and brotherly feelings of the Indian people towards the Palestinian people for their right to a homeland. The statement made by the High Court bench regarding the CPI(M) smacks of the bench aligning itself with the position of the Central Government,' the party said in a statement. The party invoked India's historical support for Palestine and urged citizens to reject what it termed a troubling judicial trend undermining democratic rights. 'We appeal to the freedom and democracy-loving people of the country to stand shoulder to shoulder with us in unequivocally rejecting this objectionable view,' the statement read.

Muslim bodies urge govt to ensure end of Israeli aggression in Gaza

New Delhi, Jul 25 (PTI) Prominent Muslim bodies and Islamic scholars on Friday appealed to the government to stand against injustice and take swift action to ensure that the 'continued Israeli aggression" in Gaza ends, asserting that India has historically aligned itself with the oppressed and it is time to reaffirm that legacy. In a joint statement, prominent Muslim organisations and Islamic scholars called on both the Indian government and global powers to intervene and stop the 'continuing atrocities" in Gaza. 'We, the undersigned leaders of Muslim organisations in India, Islamic scholars and peace-loving citizens strongly condemn the deepening genocide and humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in Gaza. On behalf of over 200 million Indian Muslims and all peace-loving citizens of our beloved country, we express our unwavering support and solidarity with the people of Palestine," the statement said. 'We appeal to the government of India, international leaders, and people of conscience worldwide to stand against the injustice and take swift action to end the continued Israeli aggression," it said. 'The relentless assault on the Palestinian people has taken the form of a brutal genocide, characterised by systematic destruction of homes, hospitals, schools, and refugee camps. Since October 2023, nearly 100,000 innocent Palestinians, including a significant number of women and children, have lost their lives," the statement claimed. The international community cannot afford to remain silent, it said. 'We call upon all states to sever military and economic ties with Israel and back the UN General Assembly's call to end the illegal occupation. We urge all Muslim-majority nations to put strong pressure on Israel and the US to halt this catastrophe," the statement said. 'India has historically aligned itself with the oppressed; this is the moment to reaffirm that legacy," it asserted. 'We call on the Government of India to honour its long-standing moral and diplomatic tradition by standing firmly with the Palestinian people in their struggle. India must denounce Israel's brutal actions, halt all military and strategic cooperation with it, and actively back global efforts to ensure peace and stability in the region," the statement said. The statement was signed by Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind president Maulana Arshad Madani, All India Muslim Personal Law Board president Maulana Khalid Saifullah Rahmani, Jamaat-e-Islami Hind chief Syed Sadatullah Husaini, Markazi Jamiat Ahl-e-Hadees Maulana Ali Asghar Imam Mehdi, Fatehpuri Mosque Imam Mufti Mukarram Ahmad, and former Rajya Sabha MP Maulana Obaidullah Khan Azmi, among others.
