General Security announces arrest of suspect who fled to Syria after Mais al-Jabal murder
The body of the victim, Lebanese national Ahmad Moustapha Shehab, was found in Mais al-Jabal, on a road near the government hospital. The main suspect, a Syrian born in 1998, had been on the run, but was brought back to Lebanon from Syria and arrested Sunday in the village of Qaa in the Bekaa, according to the statement. He confessed to killing Shehab "to take revenge" in a personal matter before fleeing.
The victim worked in buying and collecting scrap and metals in the area, and his body showed signs of stab wounds. According to preliminary information, the suspect worked with the victim and was seen with him on Sunday in a pickup truck in the streets of Mais al-Jabal, before disappearing. The army and intelligence services continued to search for him. After the crime, the municipality of Mais al-Jabal announced "measures" against Syrians residing and working illegally in the locality and denounced "the state's inability to protect its population."

BEIRUT — The Finance Ministry raised the tone in an unusually stern statement against taxpayers who commit tax fraud, reminding them of the sanctions provided by Lebanese law for such offenses. Targeting "taxpayers subject to taxes and duties collected by the Directorate General of Public Finance as well as taxes collected by the Customs Administration," the ministry assured that it will be "strict in applying the necessary legal measures to combat tax fraud, including those relating to the lifting of banking secrecy when fraud is established, in addition to imposing the criminal penalties provided for by existing laws." The ministry recalled that tax fraud is one of the offenses outlined in Law No. 44 of 2015 concerning the fight against money laundering and the financing of terrorism, and that Law No. 44/2008, the code of tax procedures, provides for a wide array of behaviors that could constitute such an infraction. These include concealing taxable income, creating off-the-books accounts, recording fictitious expenses, or hiding the real beneficiary of a transaction, to name just these four examples. The ministry's warning seems to be part of measures taken to assure the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) of the authorities' willingness and ability to reform the country. However, many businesses that pay their taxes fear that these measures may also serve to increase the pressure on taxpayers who are already compliant, while allowing informal economy actors who completely evade their fiscal obligations — and may be politically protected — to continue to thrive.

Armed altercation after Aug.4 commemoration: Activists targeted
BEIRUT — A memorial march marking the fifth anniversary of the Beirut Port explosion turned violent on Monday night when activists William Noun and Peter Bou Saab — both brothers of victims killed in the 2020 blast — were allegedly targeted by armed men following the ceremony. The Lebanese Army intervened to break up the confrontation, Noun told Al-Jadeed Monday night. The incident occurred near the port shortly after the conclusion of the official gathering organized by families of the victims. According to Noun, he and Saab were leaving the area with their families when a group of three men began arguing with Noun's cousin. The altercation quickly escalated. 'We were leaving the gathering when a group of three men got into a verbal fight with my cousin, who was with us, and they pulled out guns,' Noun said in an interview with Al-Jadeed on Monday night. 'So we did what was normal — we were with our families — we followed them, beat them up, and handed them over to the authorities.' Speaking to This is Lebanon on Monday night, Saab confirmed they were attacked by an armed individual and later went to the Gemmayze police station to report the incident and give statements. Kataeb MP Nadim Gemayel visited Noun afterward to check on his condition, according to a statement from the Kataeb Party. Attempts by L'Orient Today to contact both Noun and Bou Saab for further comment were unsuccessful. During Monday's commemoration, Noun once again called for unity around the cause of justice, stating: 'We hope Hezbollah has returned to its Lebanese roots. We want everyone to stand with us on this issue.' His comment came despite the presence of Hezbollah-affiliated Health Minister Rakan Nassereddine, whom he publicly thanked for attending the ceremony. Hundreds of people, including ministers and former ministers, joined Monday's march to honor the victims and renew calls for accountability five years after one of the most devastating non-nuclear explosions in history rocked Beirut at 6:08 p.m. on Aug. 4, 2020. Noun has been a prominent public figure in the fight for justice since the Aug. 4, 2020, explosion, which killed at least 235 people and injured thousands more. He has regularly led protests calling for accountability and has been vocal in his criticism of political interference in the stalled investigation. In January 2023, Noun was briefly arrested after declaring on live television that he was "ready to blow up the Justice Palace" out of frustration over the lack of progress in the probe. He was later released on bail.

Monday, 04 August 2025 The LAF Command - Directorate of Orientation issued the following statement: A unit of the LAF, supported by a patrol from the Directorate of Intelligence, raided the residence of citizen (A.T.) in the town of Shmestar - Baalbek and arrested him for firing at a person and injuring him. Weapons and military ammunition were seized from him. Additionally, units of the LAF, each supported by a patrol from the Directorate of Intelligence, raided the residences of wanted individuals in the areas of Jabal Al Baddawi, Nabi Yoush'a - Miniyeh, Mechmech - Jbeil, Brital, and Arsal - Tofiqiyeh - Baalbek, and Arqah and Al Owaynat - Akkar, arresting 8 citizens for committing several crimes, including arms trafficking and shooting. A quantity of weapons and military ammunition, as well as military equipment, were seized in their possession. Raids of Syrian refugee camps were also conducted in the area of Qab Elias - Zahle, resulting in the arrest of 19 Syrians for illegally roaming within Lebanese territory. The seized items were handed over, and investigations with the arrestees were initiated under the supervision of the competent judicial authorities.
