Sofia Carson Embraces Classic Glamour in Richard Quinn Dress at ‘My Oxford Year' Premiere

Yahoo2 days ago
Sofia Carson embraced classic glamour in a Richard Quinn black and white gown for the red carpet premiere of her Netflix film 'My Oxford Year' in Los Angeles on Thursday.
Carson's dress was wholly evocative of style elements and trends reminiscent of the 1950s. The dress, from Richard Quinn's spring 2025 ready-to-wear collection, featured a strapless silhouette with a square neckline and two distinct hemlines.

The external layer of the gown featured a black satin material, which flowed to the floor. Beneath the black layer was a white midi dress with allover embroidered floral elements throughout. The dress featured a cinched waist for added silhouette definition. Carson also added a pair of black opera gloves to her look.
Carson's hair was coiffed in a blunt bob with a side part. Several celebrities have adopted the bob hairstyle over the past few months, including Leslie Bibb, Halle Berry and Jenny Slate, among others. Her makeup included bold brows, lined eyes and a dark lip.
Carson's 'My Oxford Year' premiere dress made its debut as part of London Fashion Week in September 2024. As a designer, Quinn operates with a direct line to his clients, often curating special orders and bridal. The eponymous designer's spring 2025 ready-to-wear collection was curated 'with the most meaningful moments of our lives in mind,' per Miles Socha's WWD review of the collection.
'The collection did not veer far from recent ones, riffing on familiar eveningwear archetypes — regal columns, debutante fit-and-flare ballgowns, fishtail numbers and minidresses — all frosted with dense floral embroideries, neat little satin bows and dramatic frills at the necks and wrist,' Socha wrote of the collection.
Elements of old Hollywood glamour made a comeback on the red carpet. More recently, Pamela Anderson channeled timeless elegance with her custom Rodarte gown for 'The Naked Gun' premiere in London on Tuesday. In December 2024, WWD reported formalwear designers took inspiration from Old Hollywood for their respective pre-fall 2025 collections, including Markarian, Georgina Chapman and Lela Rose, among others.
'My Oxford Year' follows American Rhodes Scholar Anna, played by Carson, who falls for an ailing teach assistant, played by Corey Mylchreest, during her year at Oxford University. The film hits Netflix Aug. 1.

‘Freakier Friday' Star Sophia Hammons on Y2K Style, Eyelash Hacks and Playing Two Characters

Jordan Dorso Sophia Hammons has a few things in common with her Freakier Friday character – well, characters – and at the London premiere on July 31, it showed. In the movie, Hammons plays Lily, who is Anna (Lindsay Lohan)'s stepdaughter, and body swaps with 'grandma' Tess (Jamie Lee Curtis). At most of the premieres, she's paid homage to the character's original style with Y2K looks and bright colors, but for this one, she opted for a more figuartive take on the theme: Two different looks by the same designer, Sau Lee. For the carpet, she paired the gown with Kurt Geiger shoes, Sky Diamonds rings, and a David Morris necklace. For the after-party, she switched into a mini dress paired with Sebastian Milano shoes. Ahead, Hammons took Teen Vogue behind the scenes of the premiere, letting us in on her makeup hacks, styling secrets, and everything she learned on set. Teen Vogue: Tell me a little bit about your role in Sophia Hammons: Well, this one's a fun one because I play two roles technically. I start out as Lily, who's a girl from London who just moved to LA, and she loves fashion, loves designing, loves drawing, just a very creative person, and she doesn't really get along with her new stepsisters. And then when I switch bodies, I play Tess, who is a therapist and a grandmother, so kind of polar opposite to Lily. : Were you familiar with the movie originally? When did you first see the original movie? SH: I first saw the original movie when I was 12 or 13. At my school, we would have Freaky Fridays sometimes, where we would swap clothes with our best friends, or teachers would dress up as students, and students would dress up as teachers. So it's very full circle that I get to be a part of this now. : What has it been like as the new generation stepping into this iconic movie franchise? SH: It's a huge honor. I mean, this movie was iconic for me just as it was to anyone else. I think it's timeless; that's the great thing about it. I'm just so grateful and excited. And I think this one, I think we did a good job on not trying to make it a remake, because that's not what it is. It's just an awesome extension of the story, which I think people have been waiting for, so that's it. : Did you have any favorite moments on set when you were filming, when you stopped and were like, "Wow, I can't believe I'm doing this"? SH: I think that moment for me might've been the first week where we were filming. One of the first things we filmed was the switch scene, which is crucial to the film, because without that, we don't have the rest of the plot. And it was all four of us, and we could not stop laughing. It was so much fun. And it really shows on screen how well our chemistry was that day. Then it also set the tone for the rest of the filming process. So I think in that moment, all of us, the director, the rest of the cast members, the producers, the crew, everyone was like, 'Okay, this is going to be great and it's going to work.' : For the premiere, what was the vibe you were going for on the red carpet? How did you decide on the look? SH: We've had the incredible opportunity to have done three premieres, which has been so great. And for each one, I just wanted to keep it fun. I wanted to feel confident, and I couldn't have a better group of people around me. I'm so grateful for my stylist, Jordan Dorso, and my hair and makeup, Jen and Mark. We've been staying very on theme with the colors and the Y2K vibe for the LA and NYC premieres, but for London, I really wanted to go all out and feel like a princess. I was so excited when we found this beautiful baby pink gown from Sau Lee, which just fit me perfectly from the moment I tried it. I was even more excited to know it was from a female-founded Asian-based designer, which felt like a homage to our film that was all run by incredible women. I loved it so much that I even changed into a mini dress version of it for the after-party. : Do you have a favorite part of your day when you're getting ready for a big event like a premiere? SH: Honestly, the glamming process has been so much fun. Always listening to music, always just yapping, and it honestly makes going to the carpet less intimidating because I just have a good group of people around me right before. So I feel very supported, safe, and beautiful. Are you more of a jamming to songs getting ready person, or do you prefer a calm vibe? What's the music playing when you're getting ready? SH: It's so funny because it definitely changes depending on the time of day. In the morning, when we get ready for press, when we were in New York, I was playing Fleetwood Mac and Etta James and all those good vibes. Definitely still jamming out to them, but then versus the London premiere, I was listening to a lot of Charli xcx and Britney Spears and all of those fierce pop girlies. Is there one beauty item that you always have to have in your bag, whether that's on a red carpet or just when you're going out in your day? SH: Well, no matter what, I have some lip product, but I feel like that's a given. But I don't think I could live without an eyelash curler. : Real. SH: Right? If I were going on a desert island, that'd probably be the one thing that I'd bring. : Is there anything you say to yourself before you step out on a red carpet or step out where you're going to be photographed? SH: Honestly, and Jamie even told me this too, I just remind myself to be present, because this is honestly a dream come true. This whole experience, filming it and then now going on this press tour, it's seriously all I've ever dreamt of. And Jamie on set used to say, "Be where your feet are," which has stuck with me because you could be on a carpet taking photos, but your mind could be totally somewhere else. : Were there any fashion or beauty moments in the movie that you got to wear that were your favorite or stuck out to you? SH: Definitely, as Lily, I had lots of fun fashion moments. I actually wore a lot of Vivienne Westwood, which was so fun for me. It was super fun to get to play with wardrobe, because it was one of the main factors that would differentiate our characters when we did the body switch. So for some of the movie I was wearing a cute little skirt and a leather jacket and these awesome tall boots, but then later in the movie I'm wearing glasses and a neck scarf and plaid pants. : How do you describe your personal style? SH: I think I'm very minimal. I love the kind of effortless '90s look right now. I wish I could dress like Lily most days, but I think it's just out of habit that I love a good-fitting jean and a nice white top and some flats. That's usually my go-to. : Very model off duty. I'd really love to know, are there any products, whether fashion or beauty, that you're just loving right now? SH: Ooh. Yeah. Well, every single day for makeup, I use the Armani Luminous Silk Concealer, and I've been using that forever because I was introduced to it on a previous set, and now I don't think I could live without it. I also have a fun little secret eyelash hack. I use the L'Oreal waterproof Lash Paradise. I take an older tube of mascara and apply it to the roots of my lashes, and then I take a newer tube and use it on the tips of my lashes. : Wait, that's smart. SH: I've been doing it for years. As long as I have a little concealer and a good eyelash, I'm honestly good. Oh, and then a lip product. I've been using one of the Chanel... Any Chanel lip product, honestly. Lindsay Lohan Explains Why She Stepped Away from Hollywood: 'I Wanted to Take a Minute'

Dave Benett The Lindsay Lohan 'Lohannassaince' is in full swing as the beloved actor once again returns to the big screen. While she's busy promoting Freakier Friday — the sequel to Freaky Friday — Lohan opened up about why she didn't act for many years, stepping out of the spotlight. In a recent interview with The Sunday Times, Lohan spoke about her decision not to act for nine years between 2013 and 2022, after being a staple in tween and young adult movies in the late 90s and early 2000s. 'I wanted to take a minute,' Lohan told the Times. 'I was losing that feeling of excitement about doing a film, and I wanted to live my own life for a bit, figure out how to have a more private life, a real life. I wanted to wait to get that itch again.' Lohan surprised fans in 2022 when she returned to acting for Netflix's Falling for Christmas — a rom-com that's akin to those made popular on Lifetime and Hallmark. Lohan looked happier than she had in the later years she was in the spotlight, shrouded with controversy and legal troubles. This dubbed her new era as the 'Lohannassaince,' and with her return for Freakier Friday, fans want to see more of her. But the issues she experienced with paparazzi and harsh criticism — much like other superstars of the time, including Britney Spears — Lohan says she still has 'PTSD to the extreme' from those days. 'I don't ever want my family to experience being chased by the paparazzi the way I was. They were terrifying moments I had in my life," she continued. 'The most invasive situations. Really scary. And I pray stuff like that never comes back. It's not safe. It's not fair.' In Freakier Friday, the 39-year-old Lohan is playing a mother for the first time in her career to actor Sophia Hammons' character Lily, who plays her stepdaughter. Much like the original story, there is a body-swap conflict between the two. While Lohan has become known for this genre of film (Parent Trap, Mean Girls, Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen), she also says she felt pigeonholed for much of her career. She references the 2006 film A Prairie Home Companion, which she acted in alongside Meryl Streep, saying that 'even today I have to fight for stuff that is like that, which is frustrating.' 'Because, well, you know me as this — but you also know I can do that. So let me! Give me the chance,' Lohan continued. "I have to break that cycle and open doors to something else, leaving people no choice. And in due time, if Martin Scorsese reaches out, I'm not going to say no.' Now that Lindsay Lohan is back in the spotlight, the Times interviewer asked her what advice she would give to her teenage self. 'I would say, 'Slow down.' Everybody back then was, 'Go! Go! Go!" she said. "I wish somebody could have been behind me, saying, 'You're all right. You can slow down, kid.' Originally Appeared on Teen Vogue Want more great Culture stories from Teen Vogue? 7 new horror movies on Prime Video, Shudder, HBO Max, and more in August 2025

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Can you believe it's August already? Me neither, but I'm happy to report it's a great month for horror movies across the best streaming services. Whether you're after nineties classics or critically-acclaimed new releases, I've found seven of the best horror movies you can stream throughout the month. Oh, and there are clowns, lots of clowns. If you're planning a theater trip instead, don't forget to check out our new movies roundup for the biggest and best titles coming this year. Anaconda When: August 1Where: Netflix (US); Rent or buy (UK, AU) If you're scared of snakes, you might want to sit this one out. Or if you're feeling brave, it's now streaming on Netflix. The iconic 1997 movie focuses on a documentary film crew in the Amazon rainforest that is led by a snake hunter. The hunter is looking for a giant, legendary green anaconda, and of course, nothing could possibly go wrong here. With the right mix of action and horror, US audiences are in for a treat. Sadly, it's not streaming in other territories right now. Final Destination Bloodlines When: August 1Where: HBO Max (US); Rent or buy (UK, AU) HBO Max remains an excellent place to find all the latest horror movies. Their newest addition is Final Destination Bloodlines, a sequel that has left fans seriously impressed. Over the years, the franchise has seen mixed Rotten Tomatoes scores, and everyone has their own thoughts on which movie is the best. Currently, Bloodlines is the highest of the bunch with an impressive 93% on the Tomatometer. Following on from the other plots, this one centers on a college student who is plagued by a violent and recurring nightmare. So she tries to stop the cycle of death and save her loved ones. Final Destination fans know this setup well, and you're in for a grisly treat. Happy Death Day When: August 1Where: Peacock (US); Netflix (UK); Stan (AU) Time loop movies have been done to death (excuse the pun) after Groundhog Day, but Happy Death Day is a solid take on reliving the same day over and over. Here, we follow a college student who is murdered on the night of her birthday, but begins to relive the day again and again. In an attempt to break the loop and get her life back, she uses these resets to try and track down the killer. The sequel, Happy Death Day 2U, is just as good, but unfortunately, it's not available to stream. Killer Klowns From Outer Space When: August 1Where: Prime Video (US, UK); Paramount+ (AU) The first of many clown movies this month is Killer Klowns from Outer Space, which is exactly what it says on the tin, really. This well-known sci-fi comedy horror is well worth your time, mashing up plenty of genres with highly entertaining results. These aren't just any clowns, as the title suggests, we're dealing with extraterrestrials that look like clowns who descend on Earth. They invade a small town and begin kidnapping the locals, so they can harvest them for food. This 80s horror was a huge box office success, and it's well worth watching at home, too. Gags the Clown When: August 7Where: Shudder (US); Prime Video (US, UK) The second in our clown-filled horror recommendations this month is Gags the Clown. If clowns weren't already horrifying enough, this one is found footage, which adds that extra layer of feeling uncomfortable. Cool. In this movie, a clown roams the city streets at night, terrorizing the population. This prompts a local news reporter to try and find out his identity and put a stop to the madness. Unfortunately, Gags has inspired a group of schoolkids to create trouble too, and there's chaos around every corner. This is perfect if you want a gritty, realistic horror. The Monkey When: August 7Where: Hulu (US); Rent or buy (UK, AU) The Monkey is Osgood Perkins' latest horror outing after his terrifying Nic Cage-led Longlegs, but this one has very different vibes. Taking a darker comedy approach, The Monkey is based on a Stephen King short story and follows twin brothers whose lives are turned upside down by a cursed toy monkey that causes horrific deaths around them. There's a great cast here with Theo James playing the brothers, and Tatiana Maslany, Elijah Wood, Adam Scott, and Perkins himself round out the cast. Clown in a Cornfield When: August 8Where: Shudder (worldwide) Finally, check out this other literally named clown movie. Clown in a Cornfield follows, er, a clown in a cornfield who emerges to target locals and "cleanse the town of its burdens". Unfortunately for protagonist Quinn and her father, they've just moved to this quiet town where they end up going head to head with this serial killer clown, who is on a rampage after the town has fallen on hard times. Slasher movie fans should have a fun time with this one when it lands on August 8.
