Morgantown High quarterback Maddox Twigg earns first D-I offer from Marshall
Twigg, a rising sophomore, is set to lead MHS on its 2025 campaign and says earning the offer is a dream.
'This means the world,' he said. 'It's been my dream since I first touched a football, so it felt great to have that moment.'
Twigg had a shortened season after an injury early on in 2024, but returned to help lead MHS to the Class AAAA state quarterfinals. He rushed for over 500 yards on fewer than 100 attempts and four touchdowns.
For Maddox, this offseason is about building connections and making improvements.
'My biggest goal for the summer is to get a better connection with my receivers,' he said. 'We've been focusing on getting our receivers and quarterbacks ready for the regular season because we are moving into a different kind of offense to be able to throw and run the ball effectively.'
The offer came after Twigg and the Mohigans won the championship of the 7-on-7 tournament hosted by MU last weekend.
'I think one thing 7-on-7 has shown coaches is how athletic some of our guys are and can be,' Twigg said. 'It's more than just going out there and running routes and throwing the ball. It shows how we can do that effectively and how we can adjust to any sort of thing thrown at us.'
Having been on campus, Twigg says he was able to get a glimpse of the area and speak to some of the MU coaches, including first-year head coach Tony Gibson.
'I enjoy the coaching staff and facilities there,' he said. 'During the weekend, a couple of coaches even gave me a couple of tips on what I could do to improve and continue to get better, and that means a lot to me as a player. I think Coach Gibson is a great coach, and I have a tremendous amount of respect for him.'
Twigg's offer does nothing but motivate him even more, says the 2028 prospect.
'This is huge motivation going into my sophomore season,' he said. 'I think this could be a huge year for our team and me. We have what it takes to make a run and have a shot to go far into the playoffs this season. I think we can make a run for a state championship.'
Twigg and the Mohigans will begin the 2025 season at Pony Lewis Field in the Metronews Kickoff game on Thursday, August 29, against Parkersburg.

Oliver Farrell, who was an MU standout from 2015-19, advanced through final qualifying on July 2 to earn a spot in the British Open at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland. COLUMN: MHS, UHS football will significantly benefit from EPAC inclusion and scheduling
MORGANTOWN – With the ever-changing landscape of high school athletics in the state of West Virginia, some decisions need to be made with the thought of the present and future of a program in mind. That's precisely what both Class AAAA schools in Monongalia County have done for the betterment of their football programs, as both Morgantown and University High School have joined the Eastern Panhandle Athletic Conference (EPAC) as members for football. This coming season, MHS will play five games against opponents from the EPAC (excluding Washington). Both schools will begin scheduling all six EPAC schools (Martinsburg, Spring Mills, Jefferson, Hedgesville, Musselman, and Washington) starting in 2026. Last season's HS football season was nothing short of unique, with multiple schools filing injunctions against the WVSSAC for their place in the 2024-2025 reclassification conundrum. With so many schools moving up and down among the four classes, some programs were negatively impacted by their schedule seeming 'weaker' due to opponents moving into a smaller class. One thing this decision does for MHS and UHS is solidify a schedule every year that simply can't be questioned, as all six of the EPAC schools are classified in Class AAAA. Another strong point is that the competition the Mohigans and Hawks will face each week will increase. The state championship last season included two of the six teams from the EPAC: state champion Martinsburg and runner-up Spring Mills. Four of the six teams in the EPAC had winning records last season, with a combined record of 43-30 among the six schools. 'This was done out of necessity and respect,' MHS athletic director John Bowers said. 'Geographically, where we are located, we have a difficult time finding games north of us, like the WPIAL teams. In our state, there are pockets of schools that we should consider scheduling, and one made the most sense for varsity football at MHS. By next year, we and UHS will both be full football members of the EPAC.' There won't be a shortage of college scouts in attendance either, as multiple EPAC schools have produced Division-I signees and prospects. Both the Hawks and Mohigans have their own D-I signees and prospects that now have the chance to be seen by more coaches and schools that they haven't been seen by in the past. Although they may lose sleep preparing for games on Friday night, both the UHS and MHS coaches and players can sleep well knowing that seven of your ten regular-season games on the schedule going forward are guaranteed to be quality opponents that are also Class AAAA schools. It won't be long before we see both programs at Morgantown and University positively impacted by the change. The future of Class AAAA football in Mon County is certainly looking bright.

Missouri football beats out UT, UNC for four-star offensive lineman in Class of 2026
Mizzou is rounding out the week with a big pickup up front. Missouri football landed a commitment from four-star offensive lineman Brandon Anderson on Sunday evening, giving the Tigers a fourth commitment in the past week and their eighth member of their Class of 2026 overall. Advertisement Anderson, a Kennesaw, Georgia, product, chose MU over Tennessee and North Carolina. He officially visited each school in the month of June, spending time in Columbia on the weekend of June 6 before taking trips to both Rocky Top and Chapel Hill. He is the second offensive lineman committed to the Tigers' next recruiting class, following Detroit native Khalief Canty Jr., who committed to MU on Tuesday. Anderson is listed by the recruiting service 247Sports at 6 foot 4, 320 pounds, which is sound size for an SEC lineman. He is rated as the No. 355-overall player in his class by 247Sports' composite rankings, where he also is ranked as the No. 29 interior offensive lineman and the No. 45 player out of Georgia in this cycle. Seven of Mizzou's eight commitments in the 2026 class to date play on the offensive side of the ball: quarterback Gavin Sidwar; wide receivers Jabari Brady and Devyon Hill-Lomax; running back Maxwell Warner; tight end Isaac Jensen; and Anderson and Canty along the O-line.
