UAE-based Gulftainer boosts operations at Iraq's Umm Qasr
Baghdad ( – Gulftainer, a global port operator and logistics company headquartered in the UAE, is expanding its operational capabilities at the Iraq Container Terminal (ICT) in Umm Qasr. The UAE-based firm recently received three Kalmar container reach stackers as part of its continuous efforts to improve terminal efficiency in response to increased cargo loads, according to The Maritime Standard (TMS). Gulftainer affirmed that the upgrade will result in shorter container processing times and better utilization of terminal space through increased stacking capabilities. The new container handling equipment has a rotating cabin, customizable spreaders, hydraulically powered lifting and stacking systems, and energy-efficient engines that minimize fuel consumption. The container handlers are equipped with various safety features, including load-sensing technology, stability control systems, and integrated cameras. The Managing Director for Iraq Operations at Gulftainer, Nic Gray, stated that the company's continuing investment in infrastructure demonstrates its commitment to helping Iraq's growing commerce industry. According to Gray, the new reach stackers will enhance ICT's capacity to deliver efficient and dependable services.

Iraq studies green hydrogen, low-emissions cement initiatives
Baghdad ( – Iraq has launched a study that will examine the feasibility of green hydrogen generation as part of its clean energy policy. According to the state-run news agency (INA), the Ministry of Industry and Minerals is conducting the research in partnership with the Ministry of Electricity and the Ministry of Oil, as well as the National Investment Commission (NIC), with the participation of the private sector in the initiative. The Iraqi government is also studying approaches to build low-emission cement-producing plants. These efforts are part of Iraq's national energy strategy, which aims to reduce emissions by improving the utilization of energy and expanding the use of renewable sources, notably solar energy, in industrial operations. The ministry stated that its affiliated firms are prepared to develop solar power projects, with the government's goal of generating 12,000 megawatts of electricity from solar energy by 2030, as indicated in the statement. The Iraqi government is establishing a solar power plant in the central desert area as part of attempts to alleviate persistent electricity shortages caused by declining gas supplies from neighboring Iran. The new solar power plant will generate 300 megawatts of electricity using 500,000 solar panels, 39,000 of which have already been installed.

Iraq carries out 19 major projects to increase oil and gas output
Baghdad ( – Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani stated on Thursday that the Ministry of Oil has completed 14 significant projects and is now working on 19 more across oil fields, refineries, and the gas industry. During a meeting with senior officials in Iraq's oil industry, al-Sudani emphasized the necessity of monitoring project progress, overcoming obstacles, presenting special reports, and organizing committees to address issues hampering project completion, according to a statement released by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO). According to al-Sudani, the most important projects completed are the development of the Al-Faihaa field, the construction of an oil pipeline network in Baghdad, the installation of gas compressors in the East Baghdad fields, the implementation of the second phase of the Artawi oil complex, the completion of the Halfaya gas processing project, the rehabilitation project of the northern refinery, and the installation of the isomerization unit in the Basra refinery. The undersecretary of the Iraqi Ministry of Oil, Ali Maaraj, revealed in January that the ministry aims to increase oil production to about seven million barrels per day over the next five years. Increasing production capacity, which will reach seven million barrels per day over the next five years, is one of the primary objectives of the Iraqi Oil Ministry, according to Maaraj. In the upcoming timeframe, Maaraj noted, the ministry also hopes to completely end gas flaring and the importation of oil derivatives. The Deputy Minister for Extraction Affairs, Basim Khudair, revealed last September that the ministry has an ambitious plan to boost oil production to six million barrels per day to secure sufficient quantities for export. The ministry also seeks to achieve self-sufficiency in the produced gas needed for industrial purposes and electricity generation, according to Khudair. From 2005 to 2019, the country's oil output generally increased, peaking at about 4.78 million barrels per day. Iraq's annual oil production has been continuously declining since that time.
