Weeks ago, I paid Lufthansa £185 for a return flight from London Heathrow to Munich. The fare is non-refundable. But with 30 hours before my flight home, I am obliged to go online to declare that, yes, I fully intend to travel.
It is a disagreeable process – the opposite of the James Bond villain's line: 'I've been expecting you.'
Airlines across the world chorus: 'Just because you've booked a flight doesn't mean we're expecting you.'
Having logged in to the Lufthansa website, as a poor German speaker, I then had to scroll through the homelands on offer before happening on Vereinigtes Königreich ('United Kingdom').
Then came the challenging questions. To the surprise of the German airline, I can reveal that I have not changed my nationality, gender, passport details or reason for travel since I flew out on Saturday.
Perhaps Lufthansa could use the details I provided ahead of the flight out to Germany?
After painstakingly completing all the details from my British passport, it was surprising to be told that for the purposes of entering the UK, 'a national ID card of your home country is not sufficient'.
Then the kicker screen: 'Something went wrong. We are currently experiencing technical difficulties. Please try again later.'
In 2025, what is the purpose of check-in? I can see that in the olden days, it served a purpose. Tickets were ridiculously expensive, but also flexible. Choose to 'no-show'? You'll be able to claim a full refund or travel on any future flight. So it made sense to have a check-in stage at the airport. Most passengers, too, were checking in luggage, so an extra step was acceptable. And the flight coupons had to be physically torn from the ticket and exchanged for an additional document: a boarding pass.
Today, the check-in process looks ridiculous. Every airline inserts an intermediate hurdle that goes, approximately: 'We notice you have bought a ticket for a flight. Are you by any chance intending to travel?' This unnecessary interrogation does not take place on trains and buses (though it did on my recent Stena Line ferry from Harwich to Hook of Holland).
I accept that the booking stage and check-in formalities are subtly different. When you buy a flight online, the airline is not concerned with which document you will be using to travel. On the eve of departure, the carrier certainly wants to know. But I contend most people know that they will be using their current passport on their next flight.
A cynical person might conclude that the reason for the check-in stage is because it gives the airline an opportunity to 'upsell'. Before the Lufthansa check-in system imploded, I was invited: 'Treat yourself to an upgrade from €75.' Compared with some other airlines – particularly Ryanair and Wizz Air – that was a fairly easy exercise in swerving the many invitations to spend more money before being issued with a boarding pass.
I understand that carriers are legally required to provide a complete manifest of who is on board their aircraft; they must reconcile passengers and their baggage; and assign passengers prudently for the purposes of weight and balance.
They must also comply with aviation rules such as: 'The operator shall establish procedures to ensure that passengers are seated where, in the event that an emergency evacuation is required, they are able to assist and not hinder evacuation of the aircraft.'
But all of this could happen at the departure gate. Even if it means getting passengers there 10 minutes earlier, I believe we would accept that in exchange for expunging an unnecessary hurdle.
Which airline will take the radical and profitable step of saving on costs and passenger hassle by dispensing with check-in? I promise to be first on board.

Yes, there are cots available on request, with kids eating breakfast for £1. Is there access for guests with disabilities? There are a number of accessibility rooms at the hotel, including with wet rooms, although it is advised to get in touch with the hotel.

Wimbledon's MP has condemned travel chaos that left tennis fans facing cancellations, severe delays and overcrowding as an 'international embarrassment'. Paul Kohler, the local Liberal Democrat MP, said fans from across the world had struggled to get to SW19 this week because of repeated problems on London Underground's District line. Spectators suffered delays due to signalling failures and a track fire at Southfields – the closest station to the All England Club – as temperatures reached record highs on Monday and Tuesday. Kohler criticised Sadiq Khan, the mayor of London and chair of Transport for London (TfL), saying the issues were an embarrassment to the capital and Wimbledon, which welcomed almost 130,000 spectators over the first three days of the championships. 'This is an international embarrassment,' Kohler said. 'This is one of the jewels in the crown of British sport and people can't even get to the championships on time because the train won't get them there. 'There is such a contrast in how the All England Club run such a tight ship – the championships run like clockwork – and yet getting there is so difficult. 'I have huge sympathy for fans coming from around the world, and it is such a huge embarrassment that something we're so proud of is causing so many difficulties.' He added: 'Sadiq Khan needs to just get a grip. This has been a long-running problem. No one is surprised because this happens time and time again. 'He needs to sort it out because it is an embarrassment to London and to Wimbledon – the eyes of the world are on SW19 right now.' Tennis fans complained of 'sweaty armpits' on crowded trains on Thursday as the District line was beset by severe delays and part suspended for a second day due to a track fault at Tower Hill. Helen and Alex Kaufmann were late for the first match on Court 2 after it took them more than an hour to travel from West Hampstead to Southfields. 'The [Southfields] platform was super busy, really crowded, really hard to get off. We probably waited as long to get off as we did on the train,' Helen said. TfL issued an apology on Thursday, saying it delivered about 75% of the planned service on Monday and Tuesday. In a joint statement with Network Rail, a spokesperson said: 'We're sorry to any District line passengers whose journeys have been affected by recent signalling issues on infrastructure shared between Network Rail and London Underground. 'Over the past two days, we've experienced two separate track circuit failures, which are critical to the signalling system as they tell signallers where trains are on the network. A failure causes signals to default to red for safety, which reduces the number of trains we can run through the affected area. 'In addition, a small fire on the track at Southfields on Tuesday led to a brief suspension of services … We are doing everything we can to minimise disruption, particularly during the Wimbledon championships, and we'd like to thank passengers for their patience and understanding.' Wimbledon bosses declined to comment. But a source said 8,000 more fans a day were expected to visit during the tournament when expansion plans are passed, and that 'transport infrastructure was key'. They plan to expand a park-and-ride system. Simon Wright, 68, who opposes the plans, said this week's overcrowding outside Southfields was the worst he had ever seen. 'Wimbledon are telling people to not arrive by car and TfL are saying they cannot run any more trains. They cannot manage the number of people they have got at the moment. I think it's crazy. It's the worst that I have seen, especially because the District line has been falling over,' he said. A spokesperson for Khan said: 'When there are delays on the network, TfL works at pace to restore the services to normal and minimise disruption to those travelling around our city. The mayor remains focused on delivering the reliable, world-class public transport system Londoners expect and deserve.'

London station announces major expansion plans

The number of passengers using the Eurostar out of London St Pancras to reach the continent looks set to double, after an ambitious new deal between two major partners was announced today. Eurostar and London St. Pancras Highspeed, formerly HS1, signed a 'letter of intent' which could see one of Europe's busiest international stations - St Pancras International - vastly increasing the amount of passengers it can take. Architects have already been asked to take on the task of 'reimagining' the historic London hub so that it can 'future-proof' as the demand for cross-border travel continues to grow. Eurostar plans to increase its current fleet in the next decade, offering services to five countries, including France , Belgium, the Netherlands , Germany and Switzerland. The announcement sees a three-stage plan put in place, with the focus being on the redesigning of the international arrivals and departures area of the station by 2028. There will be investment in border control and security too, with hourly passenger numbers set to increase from around 2,500 now to 5,000 by the time the second stage of the three-part plan concludes in four years' time. The station currently welcomes some 45,000 Eurostar passengers every day, with research commissioned by London St Pancras Highspeed earlier this year concluding that demand looks set to triple by 2040, increasing from 11 million to 35 million passengers per year. London St Pancras Highspeed owns and operates the UK's only international high-speed rail link and the stations along the route including St Pancras International, Stratford International, Ebbsfleet International and Ashford International. Eurostar currently has a fleet of 51 high-speed trains, serving 28 destinations across Europe. British tourists can currently reach Paris, Lille, Brussels, Rotterdam and Amsterdam on direct routes from London. New destinations Geneva and Frankfurt, coming in the early 2030s, are expected to be popular with business travellers as both cities are international finance centres. Andrew Davies, Partner & Transport & Infrastructure lead at architects Hawkins\Brown said the plans were trying to meet the need for 'affordable, high-speed, and sustainable journeys to and from Europe.' Richard Thorp, Chief Operating Officer at London St Pancras Highspeed said of the announcement: 'With growing passenger demand for international train travel, it is important that St Pancras International station is future-proofed and optimised to accommodate this. 'With a shared ambition and collaborative approach, we can ensure our iconic station is ready to support this demand, and we're looking forward to getting started on a new era of connectivity between London and Europe.' Last month, Eurostar announced plans to launch its direct train services from London to Switzerland and Germany. The train journey between London and Frankfurt is likely to take around five hours while the trip between London and Geneva is expected to take five hours and 20 minutes. Eurostar has said it expects to see strong demand from passengers travelling on both routes . The new routes will depend on a fleet of 50 new trains, expected to cost around £1.7bn (€2bn). The operator has yet to reveal which stops each route might include and whether passengers could get off along the way. CEO Gwendoline Cazenave says: 'We're seeing strong demand for train travel across Europe, with customers wanting to go further by rail than ever before and enjoy the unique experience we provide. 'Despite the challenging economic climate, Eurostar is growing and has bold ambitions for the future. 'Our new fleet will make new destinations for customers a reality - notably direct trains between London and Germany and between London and Switzerland for the first time. 'A new golden age of international sustainable travel is here.' The new trains would also allow Eurostar to boost the frequency of existing routes. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander says: 'I am pleased to welcome this exciting investment into Eurostar services, which is a huge step in promoting green travel across Europe and boosting our international rail connections.' In May, the UK signed a 'memorandum of understanding' with Switzerland where both countries committed to working together to launch a new direct train route between the two. In light of the new Eurostar announcement, Alexander adds: 'Last month, I signed a landmark agreement to deliver a direct rail link between London and Switzerland, paving the way for direct commercial services. 'Today's announcement by Eurostar shows that the government's plan for change is rapidly strengthening the links between major cities in counties across Europe, creating more opportunities to travel, work, and socialise.' Eurostar carried 19.5 million passengers in 2024, a rise of 5 per cent on traveller numbers in 2023.
