Venus Williams Ahead Of Comeback: 'I'll Play Well, I Am Still The Same Player..'
Venus Williams, 45, returns to tennis at the Washington Open after a 16-month break, and will also compete in doubles with Hailey Baptiste.
As the world eagerly awaits the return of tennis icon Venus Williams, the 45-year-old asserts she is still the same player and is confident she will perform well upon her return at the Washington Open after a 16-month hiatus.
Williams is set to face fellow American Peyton Stearns in the first round. This marks her second appearance at the D.C. event, following a first-round loss in 2022.
'I definitely feel I'll play well. I'm still the same player. I'm a big hitter. I hit big. This is my brand. So it's about hitting big and actually putting it in. So, this will be my effort: put it in the court. That's my main goal," said Williams was quoted as saying at the press conference.
She will also compete in the women's doubles with her partner Hailey Baptiste. Williams last participated in a draw at Miami in March 2024.
Who Is Venus Williams?
A seven-time Grand Slam winner, with two US Open titles and five Wimbledon championships, Williams shared that a trip to England for Wimbledon in June reignited her enthusiasm and excitement for a potential comeback.
'When I went to Wimbledon this year, I was there for a day, and it was so beautiful and exciting. I remembered all the times that I had, and of course, the adrenaline, all those things. I think just the pure fun of playing the game, the fun of the challenge, overcoming — when you play, you overcome so many challenges: your opponents, the conditions, a lot of times you have to overcome yourself. Those things are very exciting," she added.
This year's Washington title will be contested by 28 women, including five Grand Slam singles champions. 'I remember my first time coming here. I was about 13 years old — so definitely a love affair with D.C. This is very special for me to come back and play tennis. I think it's a surprise for the fans and a surprise in general.
'In this last year, I have been through a lot physically, as well. So to come back and be able to play and hopefully enjoy myself is a great opportunity, so I'm very grateful to the tournament for the wild card," Williams concluded.

'I Am Going To Give It My All': Frimpong Aims For Glory With Liverpool
Despite his youth, Frimpong made it clear he's thinking long-term and aiming high. Liverpool's new signing Jeremie Frimpong played a pivotal role in Xabi Alonso's historic, unbeaten Bayer Leverkusen side that clinched their first-ever Bundesliga title in the 2023–24 season. Now, he's setting his sights on making history at Anfield. Liverpool officially signed the Dutch international Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen on a long-term deal worth a reported £30 million. The 23-year-old arrived as a high-profile replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold, who made a headline-grabbing switch to Real Madrid earlier this summer. Speaking to JioHotstar, Frimpong shared how quickly the move came together: 'It all happened quite smoothly. When Liverpool showed interest, for me it was a no-brainer. I told my agents — whatever it takes, just get it done." Despite his youth, Frimpong made it clear he's thinking long-term and aiming high. 'I want to look at my tablet in five years and be able to say — I won this trophy, that trophy, and more. Then, talk to my family, friends, and teammates and say — we have had a great five years. That's the goal," he said. Frimpong also had a passionate message for Liverpool supporters, promising to bring relentless energy and commitment to his new club. 'To all the Liverpool fans — I am going to give my all. My energy, my work rate — everything I have. Hopefully, we can win together, celebrate together, and experience it all as one. I'm just excited to be here. Thank you for welcoming me. I won't let you down, and I'll bring the energy you expect." Frimpong joins a growing Dutch contingent at Anfield, linking up with compatriots Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo, and Ryan Gravenberch under newly appointed Dutch manager Arne Slot. With the 2025–26 Premier League season fast approaching, Liverpool fans will be eager to see how Frimpong fits into Arne Slot's new era — and whether he can help deliver silverware back to Merseyside. view comments First Published: July 25, 2025, 21:08 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Root surpasses Ponting, next in sight is all-time leading run-getter Tendulkar
Manchester, Jul 25 (PTI) The prolific Joe Root on Friday surpassed Australian legend Ricky Ponting's tally to become the second highest run-getter in the history of Test cricket and next in sight of the England batter is Indian icon Sachin Tendulkar who continues to head the list. On the third day of the fourth Test against India here, Root first leapfrogged legendary Indian Rahul Dravid and South African great Jacques Kallis' aggregate of runs in a space of eight balls and then went past Ponting by steering the ball behind point for a single as the Old Trafford crowd gave him a standing ovation. Ponting had scored 13378 runs in 168 matches at an average of 51.85, while Tendulkar continues to top the list with 15921 runs. It was apt that Ponting was in the commentary box when Root went past him. The 34-year-old Root began his Test career with a 73-run knock on debut during England's tour of India back in 2012 at Nagpur. 'Congrats, Joe Root. Magnificent," a delighted Ponting, doing commentary alongside Ravi Shastri, hailed the Yorkshire man. Root is playing in his 157th Test. It was some sight as England skipper Ben Stokes, who was also in the middle, raised his bat even before Root could take off his helmet and acknowledged the cheers and applause from the crowd and the players Earlier, Root entered the history books by breaking the record of most Test centuries against India with his 12th hundred against the Asian giants, against whom he has played in 34 Tests so far. Overall, the ton at Old Trafford was his 38th in red ball format as he joined former Sri Lanka star Kumar Sangakkara at fourth place in the list of centurions in the game's longest format. Tendulkar (51), Jacques Kallis (45) and Ponting (41) are ahead of him in the hundred's list. Root strikes 38th Test hundred as England pile misery on India
Manchester, Jul 25 (PTI) Joe Root racked up his 38th hundred as England extended their dominance over India by reaching 433 for four at tea on day three of the fourth Test here on Friday. Washington Sundar got the ball to drift and got rid of Ollie Pope (71 off 128 balls) and Harry Brook (3 off 12) after lunch, providing a much needed relief for India after a wicketless morning session. Root (121 batting off 201), however, continued to pile on the runs and reached three figures with a four down the leg side off Anshul Kamboj, laying the foundation for the hosts' 75 runs lead. Minutes later he also surpassed Ricky Ponting to become the second highest run-scorer in Tests, leaving him only behind Sachin Tendulkar, who amassed 15921 runs. India employed spinners Washington and Ravindra Jadeja from both ends despite taking the new ball. The move worked as Sundar had Pope caught at first slip before having Brook stumped as he could not connect on the charge. Root chose to play on the backfoot when the spinners were in operation and used the reverse sweep effectively. Towards the end of the session, Root took a single off Kamboj to get past the great Ponting in the all time leading run getters list. England captain Ben Stokes (36 batting off 68) chugged along at the other end as he and Root shared an unbeaten 84-run alliance for the fifth wicket. Bumrah bowling just one over with the new ball before leaving the field added to India's woes. When he finally returned to bowl, the umpires reminded him that he was only allowed to bowl post tea. In the morning session, the Indian bowlers did not pose enough threat for the seasoned Root and Ollie Pope who steered England to 332 for two at lunch. After a forgettable evening session on day two, the Indian bowling attack once again failed to make inroads into the England batting. Besides an odd ball keeping low from the James Anderson end and another jumping from the opposite side, Bumrah and Co did not trouble Root and Pope. Guilty of offering too many freebies on the leg side on Thursday, the Indian pacers continued to offer loose balls to release pressure on the opposition. Bumrah bowled a full ball into Root's pads to start his day and the England veteran duly flicked it for a four. Later in his spell, Pope and Root were quick to pull Bumrah for a boundary each when the Indian pace spearhead pitched it short. Resuming the day at 225 for two, England eased to 266 for two in the first hour of play. Kamboj, who had an underwhelming start to his Test career on day two, created a chance in his opening spell but Dhruv Jurel could not hold on to a tough chance. Pope was 48 at the time. Washington was introduced as late as the 69th over and Root put him under pressure straightaway by reverse sweeping him for a boundary.
