Monsoon roars into Gujarat; Bhavnagar, Amreli flooded
The famed Jain pilgrimage town of Palitana was among the worst hit, recording a staggering 286 mm of rainfall between 6 am and 8 pm—the highest in the state. Streets turned into rivers, cutting off the town from nearby Sihor, Mahuva, and Vallabhipur. Uprooted trees and submerged roads led to severe traffic snarls and widespread disruption.
In Mahuva taluka of Bhavnagar, 38 students of Model High School were dramatically rescued after they were trapped by sudden floodwaters near Talgajarda village.
The Rupav river had overflowed due to heavy upstream rain, submerging the Ratol–Talgajarda road. The students took shelter in a riverside house before being rescued by fire personnel using boats and a tractor. A human chain was formed to safely bring all children out.
In Amreli district, 22 people were rescued by a Coast Guard team after being stranded by rising waters at Pipavav Dham. A bus carrying five labourers also got stuck in Savarkundla taluka but was successfully rescued by local villagers.
Two individuals stranded at a riverside temple in Vavera village were also pulled to safety from turbulent waters while passengers from some GSRTC buses were also rescued.
Savarkundla town received over five inches of rain, causing the Navli river check dam to overflow for the fourth time this season. Incessant rain in surrounding villages like Vijpadi and Jabal flooded farmlands and local rivers.
Authorities were forced to open all 16 gates of the Dhatarvadi Dam-2 by three feet each in Rajula, following a sudden surge in inflows.
Most parts of South Gujarat also reeled under the wet spell and waterlogging was reported at many places Surat city. The municipal authorities received reports of water accumulation on the stretch from Punagam to Karanj road.
