Three held for selling fake MCs in Sungai Petani

Malay Maila day ago
SUNGAI PETANI, July 6 —Police have arrested three men believed to be the masterminds behind the sale of fake medical certificates (MCs) in the district over the past two years.
Kuala Muda district police chief ACP Hanyan Ramlan said the group's modus operandi involved issuing MCs without the need for any medical consultation or treatment.
He said the case came to light during a probe into a breach of integrity involving a low-ranking police personnel who had frequently submitted MCs.
'This led to the discovery of the group selling fake MCs,' he told a press conference at the Kuala Muda district police headquarters here today.
According to him, during a raid on a premises in Taman Songket Indah near here at 4.30 am on June 26, police seized various items, including about 20 fake MCs, tablets, rubber stamps bearing the names of doctors, A4-sized paper, a laptop and a printer.
Hanyan said the three unemployed suspects, in their 30s and 40s, sold fake MCs for RM25 to RM30 a day, targeting civil servants as their primary 'customers'.
He said the main suspect was found to be a heart patient currently receiving treatment at a hospital.
'During each hospital visit, the suspect would note down the attending doctor's name and later use it on rubber stamps. Most of the names belonged to actual doctors, but the job titles were inaccurate,' Hanyan said, adding that the case was being investigated under Section 468 of the Penal Code. — Bernama

Hot dog survives locker ordeal at Germany's Neuschwanstein Castle

BERLIN, July 7 — A dog was rescued from a locker for valuables at Neuschwanstein Castle in southern Germany after its owner shut her pet inside over the objections of other tourists so that she could visit the famous attraction, police said yesterday. Neuschwanstein, a picture-postcard castle with surging turrets nestled in the Alps near the border with Austria, is one of Germany's top tourist attractions. Despite it being a hot summer's day and half the locker already having been filled by a pram, the woman locked the dog inside the small space and left to tour the castle, police in the nearby town of Fuessen said in a statement. Security staff were alerted and freed the dog, they added. 'The dog was fortunately unharmed but visibly glad when it was rescued from the already hot locker,' the police statement said, adding that officers deployed to the scene took him back to the police station. The police did not specify what breed the dog was but said it was of 'medium' size and about 60 cm tall at the shoulder. An officer on duty at Fuessen police station contacted by telephone said the dog was a mongrel. Police said they had initiated criminal proceedings against the owner on suspicion of breaking Germany's animal welfare law. — Reuters

Scammers pose as cops, dupe retired Penang bank manager of RM680,000

GEORGE TOWN, July 7 — An elderly retired bank manager lost RM680,781 after falling victim to a phone scam syndicate posing as cybersecurity officers and police. Penang deputy police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said the 80-year-old lodged a report at the Timur Laut Commercial Crime Investigation Division after realising he had been scammed. On June 12, the victim received a call from someone claiming to be from 'Cyber Security Putrajaya,' who said his phone number had been blacklisted for allegedly spreading false information. The call was then transferred to a supposed police officer from the Alor Setar Police Station, who claimed the victim's bank account was involved in money laundering. 'To clear his name and avoid arrest, the victim was instructed to open two new bank accounts. Between June 19 and 23, he transferred a total of RM680,781 into those accounts. 'The scammer also told him to place his ATM and credit cards, along with bank documents, into an envelope and leave it on a Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) electrical box near a bank in Tanjung Bunga,' he said in a statement today. On June 26, after checking his accounts, the victim discovered that all the money had been transferred to unknown third-party accounts. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for fraud. — Bernama

Woman, boyfriend held for murder after 15-month-old dies of suspected abuse in Melaka

KUALA LUMPUR, July 7 — A 15-month-old baby girl was believed to have from suspected abuse by her mother and the woman's boyfriend at a shop in Bandar Satelit, Pulau Sebang last night. The alleged abuse was discovered after the 24-year-old mother, who divorced last year, took her unconscious child to Hospital Tampin at around 11pm, Sinar Harian reported. A source said doctors found bruises on the baby's abdomen and back, along with injuries to the anal area, and subsequently lodged a police report. Initial investigations revealed that the woman, from Kampung Anak Air Durian Daun in Tampin, had brought her daughter to her boyfriend's workplace in Bandar Satelit at about 6.30pm. The mother reportedly left the child in the care of the 20-year-old man, who works at a fishing equipment shop, while she went out to buy food. When she returned to the shop at 10pm, she found her daughter sleeping and her boyfriend managing the premises. Around 10.30pm, the woman claimed she tried to wake her child to return home but discovered the baby unresponsive. She and her boyfriend then rushed the baby to Hospital Tampin, where the child was treated upon arrival at around 11pm. The baby was pronounced dead about 30 minutes later, and a post-mortem was conducted at the hospital's forensic unit. Police arrested the couple last night, and both are expected to be remanded at the Alor Gajah Magistrate's Court today for a murder investigation under Section 302 of the Penal Code.
