By: Jonathan Nicholas Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: The Bajau Semporna Bumiputera Association (Perbubas) has called on Sabahans, especially political leaders and voters, to reject Peninsula-based political parties and reclaim the state's political autonomy. Perbubas President Mansor Santiri said Sabah must not continue living in fear of federal leaders and should instead unite behind local parties to restore dignity and real representation as championed by early local movements. 'Whoever becomes minister must be brave. Were not leaving Malaysia so why should we fear the Prime Minister?'Mansor told Daily Express. He lamented that despite STAR and PBS pushing for local political dominance for decades, Sabah continues to fall under the influence of Semenanjung-based parties. He blamed the past introduction of Umno by state Islamic leaders for the side lining of original Sabah-based forces like Usno, leading to the rise of figures like Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor and his predecessor Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal. 'Were not rebelling or seceding, but if we keep fearing Putrajaya, the state will keep losing,' he added. Mansor said the irony is while many Muslim leaders once resisted Umno's entry, they later embraced Peninsula coalitions such as Perikatan Nasional and Barisan Nasional during the 2020 elections. He urged the Chief Minister to show stronger resolve and break away from dependence on federal alliances even with Pakatan Harapan, now part of the GRS-led coalition. 'If they (federal) are serious about MA63, especially on revenue rights, then stop negotiating. Just return what's stipulated in the Constitution. Want to become like Sarawak? Run independently at state level. 'Local parties must prioritise the agenda and national respect will follow but only when Sabah stands firm through its own leadership,' he said. * Read full report in tomorrow's print paper or log in or sign up for e-paper and premium online news access. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss.

Zahid confident Kedah ready for leadership change

ALOR STAR: Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is confident that the people of Kedah are ready to bring about a change in state leadership for the sake of a more stable and prosperous future. Zahid, who is also the Deputy Prime Minister, said that after two challenging and uncertain years, it is time for Kedahans to place their trust in leadership that genuinely prioritises their welfare and long-term interests. "What have the people of Kedah witnessed over the past two years? I pray and hope that things will change. A drastic shift is never easy, but it is not impossible. "InsyaAllah, Kedah will return to better leadership, one that truly cares for the people. Understand? Even if you don't, it's okay," he quipped during his speech at the Kedah Regional Development Authority (Keda) 4P and Rural Youth Planning and Implementation Committee Convention at Albukhary International University (AIU) here today. Zahid, who is also the Rural and Regional Development Minister, expressed hope that the people would remain steadfast and committed in championing comprehensive and consistent reform. He said the role of the people is vital in ensuring the change they hope for becomes a reality through wise and deliberate choices. "If we aspire for change, strive for change, and keep working towards change, then change will come to us sooner rather than later," he said.

Umno man says low turnout at ‘Turun Anwar' rally won't look good for PAS

Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi said PAS will be concerned about whether it can mobilise a large crowd of its supporters to attend tomorrow's rally. PETALING JAYA : Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi says PAS's pride will be bruised if tomorrow's anti-government rally fails to attract at least 500,000 participants. PAS is spearheading the rally in Kuala Lumpur calling for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to step down, with key opposition figures such as former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Perikatan Nasional chairman Muhyiddin Yassin set to deliver speeches. PAS MP Shahidan Kassim has predicted a turnout of between 300,000 and 500,000 people at the 'Turun Anwar' rally, while PN deputy chairman Hamzah Zainudin has claimed that the event could attract one million participants. Puad said that while the rally's goal is to pressure Anwar to resign, PAS would be more concerned about whether it can mobilise a large crowd of its supporters to attend. 'PAS is nervous – not about whether Anwar will step down or not – but whether 500,000 people will attend,' he said in a Facebook post. 'Around 90% of the turnout will depend on PAS members, and PAS's pride will be hurt if the turnout is less than 500,000 people.' On July 12, PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said the party was mobilising its members at every parliamentary and state level ahead of the rally. The rally's participants will gather at five locations – Masjid Negara, Pasar Seni, Masjid Jamek Sultan Abdul Samad, Masjid Jamek Kampung Baru and Sogo shopping mall – before marching to Dataran Merdeka. Police have said no roads will be closed in the capital city due to the rally, which is expected to be attended by between 10,000 and 15,000 participants, but diversions may be made. Puad, who is also the Johor assembly speaker, claimed that tomorrow's rally would be more effective if Umno took part in it. He noted how PAS and Umno helped force the Pakatan Harapan government to reverse its decision to ratify the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD) after a key protest. The anti-ICERD rally in December 2018, which was organised by a coalition of Umno, PAS and Malay-Muslim NGOs, saw more than 30,000 participants gather at Dataran Merdeka. They claimed that ICERD was a threat to Malay rights and Islam.
