TCS and MIT Sloan Unveil New Research on Human-AI Collaboration in Business

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), in collaboration with MIT Sloan Management Review, has launched a new research series exploring the evolving relationship between humans and artificial intelligence (AI) in large enterprises. As more companies adopt AI-driven solutions, the focus is shifting from automation to strategic decision-making support.
The year-long study, titled Human-Centric AI , examines how AI is transforming industries by enabling better decisions rather than simply optimizing processes. Covering six major sectors—manufacturing, retail and consumer goods, banking and finance, healthcare, energy, and technology—the research identifies how AI can create what it calls "intelligent choice architectures" (ICAs). These systems help organizations not only analyze data but shape the environment in which decisions are made.
The research draws insights from major global organizations such as Walmart, Meta, MasterCard, BT, Cummins, and Pernod Ricard. For example, Pernod Ricard uses generative AI to test marketing content more effectively, while Walmart applies AI in HR to identify and nurture internal talent. In manufacturing, Cummins is using AI to simulate extreme engineering scenarios and improve product resilience. Mastercard has integrated AI across onboarding, customer care, and sales, while Liberty Mutual's LibertyGPT has saved over 200,000 employee hours by summarizing and responding to complex queries.
Healthcare companies are also leveraging AI to accelerate drug discovery, reducing timelines by up to 30% and cutting associated costs by nearly 40%. Meanwhile, telecommunications provider BT has introduced an AI assistant named Aimee, which manages half of its 60,000 weekly customer interactions.
The report emphasizes that AI's role is evolving from being a task assistant to becoming a co-architect in decision-making frameworks. 'ICAs flip the script,' said Michael Schrage, research fellow at MIT Sloan. 'They do not just learn from decisions — they learn how to improve the environment in which decisions are made.'
TCS, already a key player in digital transformation, has been actively supporting enterprises on their AI journey. Its GenAI platform, WisdomNext™ 2.0, was recently enhanced with agent-based capabilities, and the company received the NVIDIA Rising Star Consulting Partner of the Year Award for AI Innovation.
This new research series reinforces the growing importance of AI in helping enterprises navigate complex choices, optimize strategies, and build more accountable, human-centered decision systems.

Indian IT giant Tata Consultancy Services said on Sunday it will cut around two percent of its global workforce, or about 12,000 jobs, as demand contracts in the sector it leads. The software services firm — India's largest by market cap — said the reductions would mainly affect employees in middle and senior roles and would be rolled out over the course of this year. TCS employs 613,000 people worldwide, and the IT services sector is one of India's biggest employers and revenue earners. The company said the move was part of efforts to become a "future-ready" organisation as it enters new markets and scales up its use of artificial intelligence. "As part of this journey, we will also be releasing associates from the organisation whose deployment may not be feasible," TCS said in a statement. It said the restructuring was being carried out with "due care" to avoid disruption to client services. After TCS's June-quarter revenue fell short of expectations, CEO K Krithivasan said this month that "continued global macro-economic and geopolitical uncertainties caused a demand contraction". IT services are the most visible part of India's modern economy and historically one of its biggest white-collar job creators, driving the expansion of the middle class. But a slowdown in the sector has seen hundreds of thousands of new graduates struggle to find work.

27 July 2025 08:55 GENEVA (AFP)The world urgently needs to find a global approach on regulating artificial intelligence, the United Nations' top tech chief said this week, warning that fragmentation could deepen risks and Bogdan-Martin, head of the UN's International Telecommunications Union (ITU) agency, told AFP she hoped that AI "can actually benefit humanity".But as concerns mount over the risks posed by the fast-moving technology -- including fears of mass job losses, the spread of deepfakes and disinformation, and society's fabric fraying -- she insisted that regulation was key."There's an urgency to try to get... the right framework in place," she said, stressing the need for "a global approach".Her comments came after US President Donald Trump this week unveiled an aggressive, low-regulation strategy aimed at ensuring the United States stays ahead of China on more than 90 proposals, Trump's plan calls for sweeping deregulation, with the administration promising to "remove red tape and onerous regulation" that could hinder private sector AI if she had concerns about an approach that urges less, not more, regulation of AI technologies, Bogdan-Martin refrained from commenting."I think there are different approaches," she said."We have the EU approach. We have the Chinese approach. Now we're seeing the US approach. I think what's needed is for those approaches to dialogue," she the same time, she highlighted that "85 percent of countries don't yet have AI policies or strategies".A consistent theme among those strategies that do exist is the focus on innovation, capacity building and infrastructure investments, Bogdan-Martin said."But where I think the debate still needs to happen at a global level is trying to figure out how much regulation, how little regulation, is needed," she who grew up in New Jersey and has spent most of her more than three-decade career at the ITU, insisted the Geneva-based telecoms agency that sets standards for new technologies was well-placed to help facilitate much-needed dialogue on the issue."The need for a global approach I think is critical," she said, cautioning that "fragmented approaches will not help serve and reach all".The ITU chief hailed "mind-blowing" advances within artificial intelligence, with the potential to improve everything from education to agriculture to health care -- but insisted the benefits must be a concerted effort, there is a risk that AI will end up standing for "advancing inequalities", she warned, cautioning against deepening an already dire digital divide worldwide."We have 2.6 billion people that have no access to the internet, which means they have no access to artificial intelligence", Bogdan-Martin pointed out."We have to tackle those divides if we're actually going to have something that is beneficial to all of humanity." Bogdan-Martin, the first woman to serve as ITU secretary-general in the organisation's nearly 160-year history, also stressed the need to get more women into the digital space.
