Former MMEA Director Jailed 20 Months For Bribery
Judge Datuk Ahmad Kamal Arifin Ismail ruled Mohd Zulfadli Nayan, 44, guilty after finding that the prosecution had succeeded in proving its case beyond a reasonable doubt at the end of the defence case.
"After hearing and considering all the evidence, the court opines that the accused failed to raise a reasonable doubt against the prosecution's case. The court ruled that the accused is found guilty and convicted of the charge,' he said and ordered Mohd Zulfadli to serve the sentence from today.
Lawyer Mohd Fazaly Ali Mohd Ghazaly, representing Mohd Zulfadli, formerly Tanjung Sedili Maritime Zone MMEA director, requested for stay of the execution of the jail sentence, but it was dismissed.
Earlier, during mitigation, the lawyer requested the court to impose a fine on his client, who has four children aged three to 11 to support.
He said Mohd Zulfadli was suspended from work as senior assistant director of the International Relations and Coordination Branch at the MMEA Headquarters on May 23, 2021, and had since been working as an e-hailing driver and taking an electrical wiring job, earning between RM2,000 and RM3,000 a month.
"He also suffers from gout, serious migraines and gastritis for which he has to take his medication regularly," said the lawyer.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Zander Lim Wai Keong, from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), appeared for the prosecution.
On May 23, 2021, Mohd Zulfadli claimed trial on a charge of accepting a cash bribe of RM10,000 from a shipping company owner, Wan Mohd Fauzi Wan Kamaruddin, at a restaurant in Jalan Yahya Awal here at 10 pm on Oct 2, 2020.

University lecturer falls victim to two online scams, loses over RM170,000
KUALA TERENGGANU: A senior university lecturer fell victim to two separate scams just days apart — one involving a cryptocurrency investment and the other a parcel scam. Kuala Terengganu district police chief Assistant Commissioner Azli Mohd Noor said the 54-year-old man lost RM162,170 in the cryptocurrency scam and another RM10,000 in the parcel scam. According to him, in the cryptocurrency case, the victim became acquainted with a woman from Hong Kong on a social media app on July 15. She introduced and explained cryptocurrency investments to him. "On July 19, the victim expressed interest and registered with the 'cryptoproe' investment platform. "Between July 19 and 25, he made five transactions from his Luno account to the cryptoproe platform, totalling RM162,170. "The victim only realised he had been scammed when he was unable to withdraw his 'coin' profits from the platform and was instead asked to invest more funds by the syndicate," he said. Azli added that the victim used his savings for the investment. The man filed a police report at 5.07pm yesterday. In the second case, on July 27 at about 7.15am at his residence, the victim said he met someone named Elizabeth on the same social media app and developed an online romantic relationship. He then provided her with his home address so she could send a parcel to Malaysia. "However, someone claiming to be from a courier company contacted the victim, asking for RM4,000 in delivery fees. They also claimed that customs had found cash in the parcel addressed to him. "To resolve the matter, the victim was instructed to pay RM8,500, but he was only able to pay RM6,000 to get the parcel released," Azli explained. He added that when the victim attempted to pay the remaining RM2,500 at an ATM in the city, the transaction failed. Upon checking with the bank's anti-scam unit, it was confirmed that the recipient's account had been flagged for fraudulent activity. Only then did the victim realise he had been deceived, resulting in a total loss of RM10,000 — all from his savings. "The victim filed a second police report at the Kuala Terengganu police station around 3.12pm yesterday. Both cases are being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating," he said.

Dashcam footage shows bus carrying kindergarten pupils crashing in Serdang (VIDEO)
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 3 — A teacher and three kindergarten children were injured after the bus they were travelling in lost control and crashed into a tree along Jalan Persiaran Universiti 1 in Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Selangor. Serdang District Police Chief ACP Muhamad Farid Ahmad said police received a report of the incident at 12.18pm yesterday. 'Initial investigations found that the bus, driven by a 44-year-old man, was on a straight stretch of road when it suddenly lost control and veered left before crashing into a tree,' he said in a statement. Dashboard camera footage of the crash — involving five teachers and 30 children on board — has since gone viral on social media. Muhamad Farid said the three children and the accompanying teacher, who sustained head injuries, received outpatient treatment at Serdang Hospital. He added that the bus driver has been detained and a remand application will be filed tomorrow to facilitate further investigations under Section 42 of the Road Transport Act 1987. Police corporal slashed with machete by mentally unstable man in Felda Bukit Kuantan
KUANTAN, Aug 3 — A police corporal was injured after being slashed with a machete by a man believed to be mentally unstable at a house in Felda Bukit Kuantan yesterday. Pahang police chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman said the incident left Cpl Mohd Shafril Izzwan Ismail, 37, from the Panching police station, with injuries to his back, chin and left fingers. The attack happened around 5.30 pm when a police team rushed to the scene following reports of a man running amok with a machete inside the house. 'While attempting to calm the situation, Mohd Shafril was attacked by the suspect with the weapon. He was taken to Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital and is now being treated in the Yellow Zone,' Yahaya said in a statement today. Police later arrested the 37-year-old unemployed suspect, who is believed to have mental health issues, and seized several sharp weapons from the scene. 'The suspect has been referred to the psychiatric ward for mental health evaluation,' Yahaya added. He has no prior criminal record. The case is being investigated under Section 324 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt with a weapon. — Bernama
