Winner of Best Animated Film at the 2025 Oscars Was Made on Free Software

Express Tribune14-03-2025

The 2025 Academy Award for Best Animated Film went to Flow, a groundbreaking and emotionally powerful animated feature that has taken the world by storm.
The film tells the poignant story of a solitary black cat and other animals struggling to survive in a world submerged by rising floodwaters.
In a powerful commentary on environmental disaster and survival, Flow combines breathtaking animation with a deeply moving narrative.
What makes Flow even more remarkable is its modest budget and the use of entirely free, open-source software.
With a production budget of only $3.5 million, which may sound like a lot to some, it's actually a very minimal sum when compared to the astronomical costs of typical animated features.
For context, the much-anticipated Inside Out 2 had a massive budget of $200 million, yet Flow managed to surpass it in both artistic merit and storytelling.
Winning the Oscar is not just a triumph for the film but for the entire Latvian film industry—Flow is Latvia's first-ever Oscar winner in the Best Animated Film category, making this victory a historic milestone for the nation.
Perhaps the most impressive part of Flow's production is that it was entirely created using Blender, a free, open-source animation software.
Blender has long been favored by independent animators and small studios, and this victory shows just how far it can take a creative vision. The use of Blender in Flow is a testament to the power of open-source tools and how they can level the playing field, offering filmmakers the ability to create stunning visuals without the need for a high-budget, proprietary animation platform.
Director Gints Zilbalodis, who was also responsible for the film's concept, began the project with just a simple sketch for the main character. 'It was just a sketch to start, and the rest of the world was designed and modeled directly in 3D. It was faster and easier to do it this way,' Zilbalodis said.
The only concept photo.
This direct approach to 3D modeling and design was not only efficient but allowed the team to focus more on the emotional depth of the film rather than getting bogged down by intricate details.
The result was a stunningly unique, immersive experience that captivated audiences and critics alike.
Flow's success shows that big budgets are not always necessary to tell a powerful story, and that the right creative tools—like Blender—can allow an indie production to compete on the world's biggest stage.
The film's Oscar win is a victory for both animation and the independent filmmaking community, proving that with passion, talent, and the right tools, anything is possible.

While the couple's wedding ceremony is taking place on Friday, the highlight of the weekend will be the party, which will feature a performance by DJ Cassidy, a celebrity favorite known for his high-profile appearances. Cassidy, who played at Beyoncé and Jay-Z's 2008 wedding, has also spun tunes at events like Elton John's Oscar party, both of President Barack Obama's inaugurations, and the 2024 Democratic National Convention. The party will be held in the historic Arsenale area, with a star-studded guest list that includes Oprah Winfrey, Gayle King, Tom Brady, Bill Gates, Diane Von Furstenberg, Kim Kardashian, and Kris Jenner, among others. Cassidy's past gigs also include performances for Naomi Campbell, President Joe Biden, and Jennifer Lopez, further solidifying his status as one of the most sought-after DJs in the industry. His 'Pass the Mic Live' tour was even turned into a special for BET. Speculation about other possible performers includes Sir Elton John and Lady Gaga, with rumors circulating that they might take the stage at one of the couple's events over the course of the three-day celebration. On Friday, the couple's wedding ceremony will take place on San Giorgio Maggiore island, featuring a performance by Matteo Bocelli, the son of renowned Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli. Guests for the event have been kept in the dark about the precise locations, with sources confirming they were only given the event times, not details. Earlier, Bezos and Sánchez hosted a welcome party at Madonna dell'Orto church, which was abruptly cut short due to a thunderstorm. Despite the rain, the event was attended by VIP guests including Orlando Bloom, Kendall Jenner, Kylie Jenner, and Ivanka Trump.

Anna Wintour steps down as US Vogue editor after nearly 40 years

NEW YORK: Magazine legend Anna Wintour stepped down as editor of US Vogue on Thursday after 37 years during which she was often hailed as the single most influential figure in the fashion world. Wintour, 75, was famous for making Vogue's front covers an authoritative statement on contemporary fashion, and for her total control over the glamorous pages inside. She will no longer run day-to-day editing of the fashion bible, but magazine group owner Conde Nast was quick to scotch suggestions that she was retiring. She will continue to hold senior roles at the group and remain Vogue's global editorial director, a company source said. British-born Wintour came to wider public renown as the inspiration for 'The Devil Wears Prada,' a hit 2003 novel and 2006 movie, for which Meryl Streep earned an Oscar nomination for her role as tyrannical magazine editor Miranda Priestly. Wintour announced at a staff meeting in New York that the monthly publication would seek a new head of editorial content, several US media reported. Fashion flagship She was made a British dame in 2017 and in February this year became a companion of honour, joining a select group never numbering more than 65 recognized for major contributions in their field. At the ceremony in London in February, Wintour removed her trademark sunglasses to receive the award and said she had told King Charles III that she had no plans to stop working. Wintour, who was raised in the UK by a British father and an American mother, reigned over Vogue in the heyday of glossy magazines. US Vogue was a staid title when she took it over in 1988 and transformed it into a powerhouse that set trends – and make or break designers, celebrities and brands. She took the title to a global audience, with huge budgets to spend on models, design, photographs and journalism funded by lavish advertisements and high subscription rates. Vogue remains fashion's flagship magazine but, like many print publications, has struggled to adapt to the digital era. Wintour was known for decisive leadership, such as axing work without discussion, and as a fixture in the front row at catwalk shows with her unchanging bob haircut. A 2015 documentary 'The September Issue' about the magazine pointed to her ice queen image and steely ambition but also revealed a warmer human side. Wintour has for many years also run the Met Gala, an extravagant Manhattan fundraiser that attracts an A-list of dressed-up stars from the worlds of fashion, film, politics and sports. As Conde Nast's chief content officer, she will continue to oversee publications including Vogue, Wired, Vanity Fair, GQ, Conde Nast Traveler and Glamour. For many years, Wintour declined to comment on 'The Devil Wears Prada,' which was written by one of Wintour's former assistants, Lauren Weisberger. But when it was turned into a musical and opened in London in 2024, she told the BBC that it was 'for the audience and for the people I work with to decide if there are any similarities between me and Miranda Priestly.' Explaining her sunglasses, she told the outlet that 'they help me see and they help me not see. They help me be seen and not be seen. They are a prop, I would say.'
