Kolkata Rape Case: Another Student Accuses Monojit Mishra Of Molestation

India.com21 hours ago
A week after Monojit Mishra was arrested for his alleged involvement in the gang rape of a Kolkata law college student, another student has accused him of molestation. The second-year student has accused him of molesting her and threatening her two years ago.
According to a report, the victim claimed that the incident took place in October 2023, when she had gone to attend a function. She claimed that the accused, Monojeet Mishra, allegedly barged into an empty room where she had gone to make a phone call and molested and threatened her.
Not only this, there have been multiple complaints of molestation, harassment, and extortion lodged against Monojit. Not only girls, but even boys have claimed to have been bullied and harassed by Monojit on campus.
Meanwhile, the West Bengal Bar Council has cancelled the license of Monojit Mishra's lawyer and barred him from practicing law.
The student was allegedly gang raped inside the South Calcutta Law College in Kasba area in the capital city of West Bengal on June 25.
Kolkata High Court on Thursday sought a report from the West Bengal Government on the three Public Interest Litigation (PIL) regarding the alleged gangrape at the South Calcutta Law College in Kasba area.
Earlier, BJP fact-finding committee member Manan Kumar Mishra stated alleged that the police were "hiding" the family of the rape survivor and not allowing anyone to meet the security guard, who is the fourth accused in the incident which took place on June 25 inside the campus of a law college in Kolkata.
He further alleged that there was an attempt to "tamper" with the First Information Report to change the name of the accused.
Mishra told ANI, "We visited everyone there and met other college staff also. When we saw some documents, it showed that some tampering had been done with the FIR. By looking at the document, it looks like someone attempted to change the name of the accused... We tried to talk to the victim, but it looks like the police are hiding the family of the victim and the family members... The guard is the best witness in this case, but they have also arrested him and are not letting him meet anyone..."
"We will submit our report; however, that is a different thing, how the government of Mamata Banerjee will work on this..." he said.
The Alipore court had on Tuesday sent the three main accused to police custody till July 8. The Court also sent the security guard, the fourth accused, to custody till July 4. The accused, Monojit, Pramit, and Zaib, will remain in police custody until July 8. The security guard, Pinaki, will be in custody until July 4.

Supreme Court refuses to intervene in HDFC Bank CEO's plea as Bombay HC lists case on July 14

The Supreme Court on Friday (July 4, 2025) refused to intervene in a plea filed by HDFC Bank CEO and MD Sashidhar Jagdishan to quash a First information Report (FIR) registered against him on the basis of a complaint filed by the Lilavati Kirtilal Mehta Medical Trust, which runs the Mumbai-based Lilavati Hospital. A Bench of Justices PS Narasimha and R. Mahadevan declined to step in after noting that the case was already listed before the Bombay High Court on July 14. 'In view of the listing of the matter on July 14, there is no occasion for us to entertain the special leave petition,' the top court observed. Appearing for Mr. Jagadishan, senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi said the FIR was 'frivolous' and a means to rope in his client and the bank in a personal dispute between the trustees. Mr. Rohatgi said three Benches of the High Court had recused from hearing the case in June, putting the reputation of the bank and Mr. Jagdishan at risk. 'I am suffering. The bank is suffering. I want interim protection till the matter is heard,' Mr. Rohatgi urged. Justice Narasimha said the top court empathised with Mr. Rohatgi's client, however the High Court has already fixed the case on July 14, and it would be improper for the apex court to intervene in the meantime. 'We sympathise with you... Bench after Bench has recused... But now the case is listed for hearing on July 14,' Justice Narasimha remarked. The Bench recorded in its order the multiple instances the case was adjourned in June, and conveyed its 'hope and trust' that the High Court would 'take up' the matter on July 14. A team of lawyers led by senior advocate AM Singhvi appeared for the Trust in the case.

'Mango' Mishra Drank Every Evening At College Union Room, Turned It Into Bar

Kolkata: Monojit Mishra, the key accused in the Kolkata law college rape case, had turned the union room into a bar and a "party" place, his batchmate told NDTV on Friday. Speaking on the condition of anonymity, she said that Mishra, who has been arrested for allegedly raping a 24-year-old student inside the college premises last month, used to drink alcohol with his friends in the union room every evening. The woman, who took admission at the South Calcutta Law College in 2016, a year before Mishra was enrolled, said that he used to harass women. She said Mishra, alias 'Mango', had once thrashed a security guard. He used to threaten to shoot the college staff over every small issue, she said. Mishra, who once held a position in the student union of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress, has multiple police complaints against him, including ripping off the dress of a woman student in July 2019 and molesting a woman in Swinhoe Lane in March 2022. He is also accused of beating up a college guard and damaging college property in a May 2024 case. He first joined the Kolkata college in 2007 and would have finished the course in 2012. During his time, he got involved in campus politics, and when the Trinamool came to power in Bengal in 2011, he dropped out before finishing his course. ' Mango' Mishra took readmission in 2017 and passed out in 2022. A year later, he joined the college as a casual, clerical staff member. The vice principal of the college told NDTV that he received Rs 500 per day for his work. Kolkata Rape Case The survivor in her police complaint has said that two men watched as a third raped her in a guardroom - after having bullied the guard into leaving - at the South Calcutta Law College on the night of June 25. The woman said three men - whom she only identified with the initials 'J', 'M', and 'P' - cornered her at 7.30 pm after a meeting of the ruling Trinamool's student wing. She said 'M' and 'P' locked her in a room with 'J', who tried to rape her. "I fought back... I cried and asked him to let me go... I even touched his feet, but he didn't let me go..." she told the cops. "He tried to force me with the intention of having sex. I kept pushing him back. I asked him to let me go. 'I can't do this, I have a boyfriend and I love him', I said." The main gate, she said, had been locked, and the "guard was helpless and did not help". She said she was then bundled into the guard's room (the guard was thrown out) where "'J' undressed me and started raping me. When I fought, he blackmailed me..." At 10.50 pm, she said in her complaint, the men released her, warning her again about informing the authorities. Four people, including Mishra and a security guard, have so far been arrested in the case.
