Karnataka BJP MLC moves High Court to cancel case over vulgar remark on officer

India Today2 days ago
BJP legislator N Ravi Kumar has approached the Karnataka High Court seeking to quash the First Information Report (FIR) filed against him by Congress workers over his vulgar and defamatory remarks against state Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh.Earlier, in a statement issued on Thursday, Ravi Kumar denied the allegations and said he was 'shocked' to see news reports and video footage suggesting he had insulted the Chief Secretary. 'I have not made any derogatory statements against the Honourable Chief Secretary. The reports being spread about me are completely baseless, misleading, malicious, and defamatory,' he said.advertisementRavi Kumar claimed he was in Hyderabad for the past three days for official work and never made any such statement. 'On June 30, 2025, we staged a protest in front of the Gandhi statue to oppose the Forest Department's eviction of Dalit families in Kadugodi.'
He asserted that during the protest, he neither spoke against the Chief Secretary nor addressed the media, insisting there was no question of him making any defamatory statement.'I tried to meet the Chief Minister and the Chief Secretary, but they were unavailable. I only said the Chief Secretary is busy with government work,' he clarified. On July 1, Ravi Kumar, while addressing BJP leaders gathered near the Gandhi statue in Vidhana Soudha for a protest, was caught on video saying with a smirk: 'The Chief Secretary works at night for the state government and all day for the Chief Minister.'Criticising the BJP legislator over his remarks, Karnataka Minister Lakshmi Hebbalkar said, 'BJP MLC Ravi Kumar has spoken against one of the finest women officers. BJP leaders read the Ramayana but their actions are of Ravana.' Joining the criticism, Minister Priyank Kharge, said, 'Ravi Kumar has a dirty heart, dirty mind and dirty tongue.' He further added, 'It shows what training he's received from the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).'On Thursday, the IAS officers' association met Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and demanded action against the BJP MLC.- Ends

Trump Signs ‘One Big Beautiful Bill Act': What It Means For Indians And High-Income Americans

Last Updated: The bill, passed by both chambers of Congress, includes several measures that will impact Indian families and workers abroad US President Donald Trump signed into law the 'One Big Beautiful Bill Act" on Friday during a Fourth of July picnic at the White House, bringing sweeping changes to taxes, remittances, and federal spending. The bill, passed by both chambers of Congress, includes several measures that will impact Indian families and workers abroad, as well as raise fresh questions about tax breaks for high-income Americans. 'This is the most patriotic bill ever passed," Trump said during the signing. 'We are putting American families, American jobs, and American values first." Impact On Indians: Remittance Tax One of the bill's key provisions is a 1 per cent levy on international money transfers made by non-US citizens, including green card holders and workers on temporary visas. The tax applies to remittances sent using cash, money orders, or cashier's cheques. India, the world's largest remittance recipient, could be significantly affected. According to the Reserve Bank of India, Indian nationals received $32.9 billion in remittances from the US in 2023-24, accounting for nearly 28 per cent of total inflows. The new levy, even at a reduced rate of 1 per cent — down from an earlier proposed 5 per cent— may strain households in states like Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar, where remittances support education, healthcare, and housing. Tax Cuts For The Wealthy The law allows up to $10,000 in interest deductions on loans for buying new American-made vehicles. However, federal tax credits for electric vehicles — which offered up to $7,500 in incentives — will now end in September, four years ahead of schedule. Meanwhile, clean energy tax credits from the Biden era will be phased out entirely by 2028. Defence And Immigration Spending The bill also boosts military and immigration enforcement budgets, with $150 billion allocated for shipbuilding and missile defence, including Trump's 'Golden Dome" project. Another $100 billion has been directed to US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to ramp up immigration crackdowns. One campaign promise that did make it through — a tax exemption on service industry tips — was included in the final law. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that the new law will add $3.3 trillion to the federal deficit over the next decade. Notably, for many Indian families reliant on US remittances, even a modest 1 per cent tax could add up. At the same time, the law renews Trump-era tax cuts for the rich, intensifying debates over fiscal priorities and economic equity. BJP asks CM to apologise for linking COVID vaccines with heart attacks as expert panel rejects claim

BJP on Sunday demanded an apology from Chief Minister Siddaramaiah for attributing a spate of cardiac arrests in Karnataka—particularly in Hassan district—to COVID-19 vaccination, after an expert panel found no evidence to support the claim. A panel constituted by the government concluded that there is no single cause behind the observed increase in sudden cardiac deaths. Rather, it described the phenomenon as multifactorial, with behavioural, genetic, and environmental risk factors contributing. The BJP said the Chief Minister must issue an unconditional apology for making what it called a 'baseless allegation.'

"Safety is myth under BJP rule": Congress' Pawan Khera targets NDA govt over murder of businessman Gopal Khemka

Congress leader Pawan Khera came down heavily on the NDA government in Bihar over the prevailing law and order situation in the state, saying that safety has become a "myth" under their rule. His remarks came days after businessman Gopal Khemka was shot dead near the main gate of his residence in Patna's Gandhi Maidan area. In a social media post on X, Khera wrote, "The BJP's governance model is Goonda Raj wrapped in a velvet glove of PR about "development". All optics, no order." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like If you have a mouse, play this game for 1 minute Navy Quest Alleging that 65,000 people have been murdered under NDA's watch, Khera took a jibe at Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar , stating that the Chief Minister has now become "Chief Spectator" of a daily carnage. The social media post reads, "In Bihar also, the NDA government never misses a chance to pat itself on the back for "improving" law and order - all while conveniently ignoring that, even as per official figures, nearly 65,000 people have been murdered under NDA's watch. The Chief Minister in reality is the Chief Spectator of a daily carnage." Live Events "Now, with the killing of businessman Gopal Khemka in Patna's posh Gandhi Maidan area, it's clear that under BJP rule, safety is a myth. No amount of money, influence, or power can ensure your safety and that of your loved ones. The bottomline is: BJP doesn't value human life. It only chases headlines, and even those are fake," the Congress leader alleged. Earlier today, Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha , Rahul Gandhi launched an all-out attack on the Nitish Kumar-led NDA government in Bihar, alleging that Bihar has become "crime-capital" of India. The murder of the businessman has evoked sharp political reactions from the opposition parties and put the spotlight back on the law and order situation in the State, which is going to the polls in the next few months. In a post on social media platform X in hindi, Rahul Gandhi said, "The brazen murder of businessman Gopal Khemka in Patna has once again proven - the BJP and Nitish Kumar together have turned Bihar into "India's crime capital." Today, Bihar lives in the shadow of loot, gunfire, and murder. Crime has become the 'new normal' here - and the government is utterly ineffective" "Brothers and sisters of Bihar, this injustice can no longer be tolerated," he said. The former Congress President observed that a government that cannot ensure the safety of your children cannot be entrusted with your future either. "Every murder, every loot, every bullet - is a cry for change. Now is the time for a new Bihar - where there is no fear, only progress. This time, the vote is not just to change the government, but to save Bihar," he called on the voters ahead of the assembly elections. Bihar Police has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the murder case of businessman Gopal Khemka, who was allegedly shot dead in the south area of the Gandhi Maidan in Patna on Friday.
