Addressing the Parliament of Ghana, the PM said the global order created after World War II was changing fast and the revolution in technology, the rise of the Global South and the shifting demographics were contributing to its pace and scale.
"Progress cannot come without giving voice to the 'Global South'. We need more than slogans. We need action. That is why, during India's G20 Presidency, we worked with the vision - One Earth, One Family, One Future.''
The 'Global South' is a term used to broadly describe countries with lower levels of economic development, often located in the Southern Hemisphere, primarily in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. It's a way to categorise nations based on socio-economic and political characteristics rather than solely geographical location. The term is often used in contrast to the "Global North", which typically includes wealthier, more industrialized nations.
The Prime Minister regretted that challenges like colonial rule that humanity had faced in the earlier centuries, still persisted in different forms.
He said the world is facing new and complex crises like terrorism, climate change pandemics and cybersecurity and institutions created in the last century were struggling to respond. "The changing circumstances demand credible and effective reforms in global governance.''
"We put emphasis on Africa's rightful place at the global high table. We are proud that the African Union became a permanent member of the G20 during our Presidency,'' the Prime Minister added in his address.

NDB should play a catalytic role in unlocking private sector capital," she focus must be on tailored support for small and medium enterprises, especially women-led enterprises, to ensure inclusive participation, economic development and promote gender equity, Sitharaman also highlighted the importance of strengthening the NDB's financial capacity to meet the scale and urgency of development financing needs. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on Friday conferred with 'The Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago' - the country's highest civilian honour. Modi, who is on a two-day visit to the Caribbean island nation on the second leg of his five-nation tour, was bestowed the award in recognition of his global leadership, his deep engagement with the Indian diaspora, and his humanitarian efforts during the Covid-19 pandemic. "Honoured to be conferred with 'The Order of the Republic of Trinidad & Tobago'. I accept it on behalf of 140 crore Indians," Modi said. The award was announced by Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar on Thursday, who described Modi's visit as a moment of shared pride and historical connection. This is Modi's first visit to the country as prime minister and the first Indian bilateral visit at the prime ministerial level to Trinidad and Tobago since 1999. Modi arrived here from Ghana, where he was conferred with 'The Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana', the country's national honour. The award was conferred on the prime minister in recognition of his "distinguished statesmanship and influential global leadership", the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a statement.

Quality of urban governance key to ease of living: Rajya Sabha Dy Chairman Harivansh
Manesar (Haryana) [India], July 4 (ANI): Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh addressed the valedictory session of the National Level Conference of Chairpersons of Urban Local Bodies in Manesar, Haryana on Friday. In his remarks, Deputy Chairman RS Harivansh touched upon the importance of civic governance in improving the quality of life and highlighted the broader objective of 'Ease of Living' set by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Harivansh also lauded the innovative efforts of various Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) in addressing several local challenges through the use of technology and the efficient utilisation of available resources. 'Since 2014, alongside the emphasis on Ease of Doing Business, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also worked towards Ease of Living. In this regard, the role of Urban Local bodies is even more important,' he added. Addressing various demands for civic amenities, providing easy access to essential services through digitisation, and building capacity in solid waste management are some steps where urban local bodies have a key role to play. He urged the heads of various urban bodies to make their governance more participatory by maintaining transparency in budget allocations and measuring their outcomes. In the past, there have been recommendations to improve the accounting and auditing standards of ULBs. In his remarks, Dy Chairman Rajya Sabha Harivansh spoke about the need for state governments to decentralise and empower local bodies to ensure the 73rd and 74th amendments to the constitution are implemented in letter and spirit. He said, 'Many states have not fully taken the recommendations of the State Finance Commissions to empower local bodies financially and administratively. It is the urban schemes planned by the Union Government and the efforts of the Union Finance Commission that have supported the implementation of key projects at the city level.' As cities increase their contribution to GDP, he urged the elected representatives of various cities to focus on preparing for future challenges. 'With the increase in economic activities in urban areas, our emissions will rise too. Therefore, addressing the concerns arising out of climate change and implementing sustainable practices in our urban areas are also important,' he said. In his concluding remarks, Harivansh stated that the governance of urban areas will be crucial in achieving the nation's goal of becoming a developed country by 2047. In this regard, governance should be more inclusive and participatory to make it a people's movement. The two-day programme held in Manesar was also addressed by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and Chief Minister of Haryana, Nayab Singh Saini. The conference included presentations from various cities displaying best practices in different segments of civic governance. (ANI)
