Sadly for the millions who watched the show on ITV the swan song is set to go to one of the streaming giants.
A TV insider said: 'This will be bittersweet news for all the people who would be thrilled at the prospect of seeing all the stars of Downton Abbey coming together one last time.
'Because it means there's likely to be a bidding war between the streamers to get this, probably Netflix, who currently show all the TV episodes, and Prime Video, who have the first two movies.
'With the release of the third film it's 'Goodbye Downton Abbey'. But not everyone is going to be able to take part in that, as only those who have the right subscription will be able to see it.'
I exclusively revealed last year that creator Julian Fellowes and his team were preparing to make Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale.
It will star, for the last time, the likes of Hugh Bonneville and Elizabeth McGovern as the Earl and Countess of Grantham as well as Michelle Dockery as Lady Mary Crawley and Jim Carter as Mr Carson.
They became huge stars on the back of the series which ran for six series from 2010 to 2015.
The new movie will be released in September and the documentary, made by British production company Monkey Kingdom, which has just finished filming will drop around the same time.
It will include behind-the-scenes footage from the set of the film, as well as interviews with the cast and members of the public who'll explain why its such a grand British Institution.
Then they'll just need a subscription to an American streamer to watch it.

HE has seemed a tad elusive since reaching the final of Strictly Come Dancing in 2023.
Now actor Layton Williams is returning to our screens, this time in the second series of the Netflix hit Geek Girl.
It tells the story of awkward adolescent Harriet Manners, played by Emily Carey, who is suddenly plunged into the bizarre world of modelling.
The first series of the comedy drama, which is an adaptation of the children's novels by Holly Smale, debuted last year, while the second is due to air in 2026.
Filming has started in London with Layton joining the cast playing a extravagant fashionista called Onassis.
That must be a real stretch for him.
Scot sitcom to return
AWARD-winning Scottish sitcom Two Doors Down will return with a Christmas special, two years since the last series aired.
The residents of Latimer Crescent will congregate at Beth (Arabella Weir) and Eric's (Alex Norton) house to celebrate.
Others returning include ELAINE C SMITH.

Meanwhile, Stu Richards, director of the show, said: 'I cannot believe we're still getting away with this.
'It is just a ludicrous privilege.'

SEX Education star Gillian Anderson has revealed how playing a therapist in the Netflix drama made her realise she hadn't always dealt with trauma in her own life.
Speaking on Davina McCall's Begin Again podcast she said: 'We have a tendency to brush things under the carpet when traumatic things happen to us.
'I mean I know that I certainly have, I just kind of get on with my life. It's not until somebody with some objectivity says, 'Whoa wait a minute, what's going on here and you need to take care of yourself or you need to address this or you need to report this.''
She added: 'During MeToo, the degree to which women were encouraged to share how many times or how often they had been harassed or attacked or raped indeed.
'It's important we make a fuss. It's not nothing.'

This Morning star makes return to ITV show with exciting wedding update
A This Morning star returned to show with exciting news as she confirmed she's officially married her partner A familiar face from This Morning graced the show with a delightful update, sharing that she has recently exchanged vows with her beau. On the episode aired on Friday (July 18), Dermot O'Leary, who has landed a new presenting gig, returned to our screens alongside his co-host Sian Welby for the ITV favourite. The pair were ready to delve into the day's headline stories, which included a culinary segment with chef Poppy O'Toole, who couldn't hide her excitement as she announced her recent nuptials, reports the Mirror. Dermot introduced the segment by saying: "We've got the nearly married potato queen, Poppy O'Toole." As the camera shifted to the TV cook, she joyfully waved and flaunted her new wedding band. Dermot congratulated her, prompting Poppy to respond with a heartfelt: "Thank you." Intrigued, Dermot inquired: "Did you serve potatoes at your wedding?" The self-styled 'Potato Queen' Poppy confessed: "Ok so as much as I love potatoes I did say not that much so we did just had one truffle potato salad." Poppy took to Instagram to share her joy, admitting that the wedding day didn't go exactly as planned with her partner Tom. Her post read: "Well you know how we organised a wedding in like four weeks... turns out you need to give at least 29 days notice and we forgot haha. Very us." She continued: "Unconventionally we had our 'wedding' two weeks ago where we wrote our own vows and had our friend lead the ceremony (she did amazing) so although it wasn't 'official', it was the best day of my life! ! "So this morning we did all the official stuff at the registry office (shout out Redditch xx) with just our parents. We didn't have a photographer so Tom decided to do a little photoshoot of me in the waiting room on his iPhone. Very glam. Very high fashion. Then our Moms signed the papers as witnesses and it was all very lovely. "Moral of the story: it doesn't matter where you are in the world, if you're with the people you love and having a laugh, you're very very lucky. I had South of France on my mood board but Redditch will do xx." The comments section was brimming with heartfelt congratulations for the newlyweds from admirers and celebrity friends alike. Gemma Collins was quick off the mark with her well-wishes, simply stating: "Congratulations." Andi Oliver chimed in with: "Congratulations lovelies. May the road rise with you!"

Robbie Williams releasing the album he wanted to after quitting Take That
Robbie Williams has reflected on his shock departure from Take That ahead of the release of Britpop, his first album of new material in nine years. The Angels singer, 51, joined the chart-topping boy band in the 1990s, alongside Gary Barlow, Mark Owen, Howard Donald, and Jason Orange. Take That had almost unparalleled success and left their mark on the UK charts forever, landing a whopping eight number one singles between 1993 and 1996. But the good times couldn't last, and Robbie sensationally left the group in 1995, devastating their fans so much that the Samaritans opened up a helpline. As a solo artist, Robbie came into his own almost immediately, with his 1997 debut album Life Thru a Lens going straight to number one in the UK albums chart and a cover of George Michael's Freedom becoming a hit. He's now revealed that upcoming studio release Britpop is closer in style to 'the album he wanted to make' upon leaving the group, which he appears to think didn't go far enough. Ahead of the release of his new single Spies, he said: '[With Britpop] I set out to create the album that I wanted to write and release after I left Take That in 1995. It was the peak of Britpop and a golden age for British music. 'The new record is raw, there are more guitars and it's even more upbeat and anthemic than usual. I'm immensely proud of this as a body of work and I'm excited for fans to hear this album.' The big singles from Life Thru a Lens paid tribute to the Britpop sound, with songs like Let Me Entertain You prioritising rock instrumentation over the pop ballads Take That had become known for. From there, he became one of the most recognisable faces in British pop culture and eventually had his life story turned into musical biopic film Better Man. His success as a solo artist ultimately led him back to Take That, when he briefly rejoined the reformed group for their 2010 album Progress and its subsequent tour. But it appears that despite the fast and successful start to his solo career, Robbie may have wanted things to play out a little differently behind the scenes. The Rock DJ hitmaker only left Take That after being reprimanded for partying with Gallagher brothers Liam and Noel of Oasis, of which Robbie was a huge admirer. While Life Thru a Lens featured Oasis-inspired songs, like Lazy Days and Old Before I Die, the album contained a number of softer songs too – and it seems Robbie wanted things to be louder and heavier than they were. In 2013, Robbie spoke about the album and its tour to BBC Radio 4's Mastertapes series, saying: 'I'm a cabaret artist. For about five minutes in 1997 I wished to be [Radiohead singer] Thom Yorke and Liam Gallagher. More Trending It was ultimately the ballad Angels that became the biggest hit from the album, catapulting Robbie to international fame after its release as a single in late 1997. However, it would take until his second album, I've Been Expecting You, for Robbie to land his first number one, with 1998 single Millennium – the song was co-written by Robbie's frequent collaborator Guy Chambers. While I've Been Expecting You again acknowledged the Britpop sound of Oasis, the album's sound prioritised more pop-oriented instrumentation after the success of Angels. Robbie's album Britpop releases on October 10, 2025. Got a story? NFL legend Drew Brees set for broadcasting comeback with Netflix Christmas game
NFL legend Drew Brees is set for a broadcasting comeback via one of Netflix 's Christmas Day games. Brees, 46, joined NBC in 2021 following his retirement from football, but lasted just one season in the booth after some scrutinized performances. He later told Front Office Sports that he wished to get another chance calling games. And the Saints icon and Super Bowl XLIV champion will reportedly get that shot once again this December. According to The Athletic, Brees will call either the Cowboys- Commanders game or the Lions-Vikings game on Christmas for Netflix. He appeared on the international broadcast for Netflix last year, while he also got the chance to be a guest analyst on ESPN's 'Monday Night Countdown' pregame show. Nonetheless, Brees will surely relish the chance to get back in the booth for Netflix after his stint with NBC didn't quite go to plan. 'I think I could be the absolute best at it, if given the opportunity,' Brees told FOS. 'I valued my time at NBC so much, for that year after I played, I spent most of that time in-studio on Sunday Night Football, having to work with some incredible people. 'But I didn't really get the chance to broadcast NFL games. And that's what I feel like I'm most qualified to do. That's what I feel like I'm most passionate about. And certainly where my knowledge base lies, right? Telling the story of the game, getting you inside the huddle, getting you inside the quarterback's head, letting you know how we're attacking this defense. That to me is something I'd love to do down the road when the time is right.' At NBC, Brees - who is second all-time in passing yards - called several NFL games, Notre Dame college games and also spent time working as a studio analyst. The last game he called was the AFC playoff matchup between the Bengals and Raiders in January 2022, and his performance was widely panned by fans. The Athletic also reported that CBS' Nate Burleson will serve as a game analyst for the second consecutive year, while his colleague, former Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan, was 'under heavy consideration' as well. Top networks have reportedly been hesitant to allow Netflix to utilize their talent, though ESPN's Mina Kimes, CBS' Ian Eagle and Fox's Greg Olsen were part of the streamer's broadcast last year. Netflix signed a three-year deal with the NFL worth a reported $150million to broadcast Christmas Day doubleheaders in 2024, 2025 and 2026.
