When did we offer to team up with you, Bung asks ‘deluded' PBS

Sabah Umno chief Bung Moktar Radin accused PBS acting president Dr Joachim Gunsalam of 'political self-delusion'.
PETALING JAYA : Sabah Umno chief Bung Moktar Radin has denied any offer to work with Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) component Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) in the upcoming state election.
In a statement, Bung took aim at PBS acting president Dr Joachim Gunsalam, accusing him of 'political self-delusion' for suggesting that his party had turned down Barisan Nasional's (BN) offer to team up for the state polls.
'Sabah BN never at any point extended an invitation to PBS to collaborate. This appears to be yet another case of political self-delusion, where one imagines conversations and negotiations that simply never took place.
'You cannot reject a proposal that was never made. Please, don't flatter yourself,' Bung said.
Yesterday, Joachim said the PBS Supreme Council had voted against working with BN in the state polls, adding that the party remained committed to GRS.
PBS was formerly a BN component but left the coalition twice, most recently after the 2018 general election when BN fell from federal power.
Bung, the Kinabatangan MP, said BN had moved on from former allies that had once abandoned the coalition.
'Sabah BN does not pursue alliances with parties that lack a clear political compass or credibility. PBS chose to abandon BN in the past for its own expedient interests. That chapter is closed,' he said.
GRS and PH are currently allies in the Hajiji Noor state government, while BN sits in the opposition in the Sabah legislative assembly.
GRS threatened to go solo in the state polls after the unity government secretariat announced that PH and BN had agreed to an election pact.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, as PH chairman, later called for PH-BN to work with the ruling state coalition.
Bung, who previously rejected working with GRS for the polls, recently said Sabah Umno was open to collaborating with the ruling coalition if it approached seat negotiations with sincerity.

Malaysia backs youth-led ventures as Asean chair, touts digital treaty and NIMP 2030 as key enablers

KUALA LUMPUR, June 28 — The Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) is actively creating more space for young entrepreneurs to thrive, in line with Malaysia's role as Asean chair, said Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz. He said that through initiatives such as the Asean SME Academy and the Digital Economy Framework Agreement (DEFA), the ministry is breaking down barriers so that these entrepreneurs can start, scale, and connect their ventures beyond borders. 'DEFA, the world's first regional digital economy treaty, is projected to grow Asean's digital economy to over US$2 trillion by 2030 and generate millions of jobs. These are not just statistics; they are doorways to your future,' he said in his closing keynote address at the Nusantara Youth Forum 2025 held in Putrajaya today. Tengku Zafrul said that as Malaysia opens doors for young entrepreneurs and innovators, it is important to mention how Malaysia's own long-term strategies align with these regional ambitions. 'Through the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 (NIMP 2030), Malaysia is transforming our industrial landscape by focusing on high value-added sectors, advanced manufacturing, and future-oriented skills. 'NIMP's core mission is to create quality jobs and ensure our industries – especially in electrical and electronics (and) green tech – remain globally competitive, resilient, and sustainable,' he said. According to the minister, national frameworks such as NIMP are not just about Malaysia's progress. 'They also complement Asean initiatives like DEFA and the Asean SME Academy, creating a seamless ecosystem that supports youth, from upskilling and financing to market access, so you can truly take your ideas from the region to the world,' he said. Tengku Zafrul also gave recognition to arts and culture, saying that too often, the creative sector is wrongly treated as secondary to the 'main economy.' 'The truth is, culture and creativity are economic engines, identity builders and bridges between nations,' he said, adding that Asean's creative industries, from music to film, are gaining global attention. The MITI Minister said he cannot overstate the importance of entrepreneurship in driving both economic progress and social transformation. 'Today, the most exciting businesses in Malaysia, and indeed throughout Asean, are being founded, led, and grown by youths. 'Whether you are developing tech solutions, running sustainable farms, designing innovative products, or launching platforms for social impact, you show the world what is possible when ambition is united with purpose,' he added. — Bernama

MACC tracks Daim-linked assets in US, Singapore, Japan, Italy and Jersey

KUALA LUMPUR, June 28 — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has expanded its investigation into high-value assets linked to the late Tun Daim Zainuddin and his family to five more countries. This follows earlier action in the United Kingdom and Malaysia involving several high-profile assets tied to the former finance minister and his proxies, New Straits Times reported this evening. Citing unnamed sources, the newspaper listed the five countries as the United States, Singapore, Japan, Italy and the Crown Dependency of Jersey, an island in the English Channel off the coast of Normandy, France. The assets in question were allegedly not declared to the MACC during its investigation. 'Other nations where assets are allegedly being held will also face similar action,' one unnamed source was quoted as saying. The MACC began probing Daim's financial affairs as part of a wider investigation into unexplained wealth and asset declarations involving politically exposed persons.

Australia Northern Territory minister's visit reinforces relations with Sarawak

Chan (third left) presents a memento to Cahill. At second right is Hii. KUCHING (June 28): The Australia Northern Territory Government hosted a networking dinner here in conjunction with its Minister for Trade, Business and Asian Relations Robyn Cahill's visit to Sarawak recently. Cahill, who led a seven-member delegation, was in the state capital to discuss potential cooperation between Sarawak and the Northern Territory, given their shared interest in a number of common areas. Representing the state government at the event was Deputy State Secretary Datu Hii Chang Kee, said Sarawak Australia Business Chamber president Rodger Chan in a statement today. In his speech at the dinner, Chan said the programme marked Cahill's first visit to Sarawak. 'This is significant as she has skipped other parts of Malaysia. 'This shows the Northern Territory Government's and her seriousness in engaging with Sarawak. 'There is also a Department of Asian Relations in her government, and this shows how the Northern Territory Government is serious about and focusing on Asia,' he said. Chan added that Cahill's visit to Sarawak reignited the long-standing relationship between Australia and Sarawak, noting that this year marked the 70th anniversary of Australia-Malaysia diplomatic relationship. 'It also marks the 80th anniversary of the landing of Australia and ANZAC forces landing in Bario under Operation Semut. In fact, Australia was here more than 80 years ago to help Sarawak in defending the Japanese occupation,' added Chan. He said since the 1950s, many Sarawakians had, under the Colombo Plan programme, benefitted from Australia tertiary education, and many of them had become leaders of Sarawak. 'The guestimate is that over 40,000 Sarawakians were educated in Australia – not counting those who studied in the two Australian university campuses in Sarawak.' Chan said many people were not aware that the Colombo Plan did not stop at education, as it also extended to infrastructures and services. 'An Australian engineering firm designed and built the Satok Bridge under the Colombo Plan. 'I think we should capitalise, monetise and build on this long-standing relationship. 'There are opportunities aplenty in many fields including green energy, digital technologies, tourism, education, health, trade and sports,' he added.
