Al-Ittihad take advantage of Al-Hilal stumble to edge closer to Saudi title

Egypt Today22-04-2025
April 21 (Reuters) - Al-Ittihad moved six points clear at the top of the Saudi Pro League after coming from behind to beat Al-Ittifaq 3-2 as title rivals Al-Hilal were held to a 2-2 draw by Al-Shabab on Monday.
Al-Ittihad bounced back from losing 2-0 to Al-Fateh in their previous match to move up to 68 points with five games remaining.
Al-Ittifaq scored first after five minutes when Vitinho had a powerful shot deflected into the net, but Al-Ittihad equalised six minutes later when a low cross from Karim Benzema found Danilo Pereira who slotted it home from close range.
Benzema took matters into his own hands to score their second goal 10 minutes before halftime, when he capitalised on a defensive error to go one-on-one with the keeper and score easily.
Houssem Aouar made it 3-1 for Al-Ittihad just before the interval after a low cross from Moussa Diaby.
Chances were limited in the second half, but the game became nervy in the closing minutes as Al-Ittifaq pulled one back after an own goal from Danilo seven minutes before fulltime.
Al-Hilal stumble
Al-Hilal had reduced the gap at the top to four points last week, but their hopes of retaining their title are now hanging by a thread.
Daniel Podence opened the scoring for Al-Shabab after seven minutes with a precise shot from distance but Sergej Milinkovic-Savic equalised for the home team in the 31st minute after a clever pass from Salem Al-Dawsari to score from close range.
Aleksandar Mitrovic almost put Al-Hilal ahead in the final minute of the first half, but volleyed wide of the left post.
Salem made it 2-1 for Al-Hilal just after halftime, collecting a through-ball from Malcom and firing home from close range.
But defender Mohammed Al-Shuwaikh levelled for Al-Shabab in the 68th minute with a powerful header from a Podence corner.
Yannick Carrasco thought he had scored another goal for Al-Shabab three minutes later, but his effort was ruled out for offside.
Haroun Camara missed a chance to put Al-Shabab ahead in the 82nd minute, shooting wide in a one-on-one.
Al-Hilal pressed fiercely in the remaining minutes in search of a winning goal, but Mitrovic headed against the crossbar from close range and Malcom missed an opportunity in stoppage time with a weak shot.

Ahmed 'Kouka' Hassan joins Saudi side Al-Ettifaq - Talents Abroad

Egyptian towering striker Ahmed "Kouka" Hassan has joined Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Ettifaq on a free transfer, the club announced on Thursday. Although the deal's details were not disclosed, reports suggested that the 32-year-old forward signed a one-year contract. The move could potentially mark the end of his long European journey, following a brief stint with French Ligue 1 side Le Havre, where he made 16 appearances, scoring three goals and registering one assist. Kouka began his European career in 2011, joining Rio Ave's U-19 team from Egyptian giants Ahly, where he broke into the senior squad in 2012. In the summer of 2015, he left Rio Ave to sign for Portuguese side SC Braga. He then embarked on a temporary spell with Greek side Olympiacos, which became permanent in the 2020 season. The nomadic striker moved to Turkey in 2021 on loan to Konyaspor, before playing for Alanyaspor in 2022. He then joined Pendikspor on a free transfer in September 2023. In February 2024, Kouka returned to Alanyaspor after becoming a free agent. His stay was short-lived, as he rejoined Rio Ave in August 2024 on a one-year deal. However, he made another switch in January 2025, signing for Le Havre in a Bosman deal until the end of the season. Al-Ettifaq finished seventh in the 2024/25 Saudi Pro League season. Zamalek Announces New Deal After Al-Juffali's Departure

Amir Haggag Zamalek officials are awaiting the conclusion of negotiations with Pharco Club regarding the signing of Ahmed Al-Juffali, a first-team player, to resolve the team's foreign player crisis. Zamalek currently has five players in its ranks: Mahmoud Bentayj, Chico Banza (new signing), Seif El-Jaziri, Salah Musaddaq, and Ahmed Al-Juffali. Once the Al-Juffali deal with Pharco is completed, Zamalek will announce its new deal to make room for the new player. Pharco Club is close to resolving the crisis with Tunisian Ahmed Al-Juffali, Zamalek's player, after most previous attempts to loan the player to any club in Egypt failed. Tunisian clubs insisted on obtaining his services for free or for a low fee that would not satisfy Zamalek's management. Al-Juffali is keen to continue in the Egyptian Premier League, which has prompted Pharco Club officials to enter serious negotiations to sign the player on loan. This move will relieve pressure on Zamalek regarding the foreign player issue and allow the club to register new foreign players in preparation for the next season. Al-Jafali refuses to leave Zamalek unless he plays in the Egyptian Premier League, as he is committed to playing in Egypt. He was offered to Al-Ittihad Alexandria and Al-Masry Port Said, but Al-Ittihad rejected the player based on the wishes of technical director Ahmed Sami, as well as Al-Masry Club. He was close to joining Pharco in the coming days, provided that all financial details are agreed upon between the two clubs, amid a shared desire to quickly resolve the matter. read more Japan Stun Spain 2-1 to Qualify for World Cup Last 16 World Cup 2022: Get to Know Confirmed Line-ups of Japan and Spain Group E Decider Saudi Arabia Bid Farewell to World Cup after 2-1 Loss to Mexico Tunisia Achieve Historic Win over France but Fail to Qualify Tunisia to Clash against France in World Cup Sports Get to Know Squad of Group D Teams in World Cup Sports Al Ahly Gift EGP 70,000 to Players After Claiming Egyptian Super Cup Title Sports Bencharki Hits First 2 Goals with Al Jazira Since Leaving Zamalek Sports Arsenal Possible Line-up for Nottingham Forest News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani
