Soccer-Brazilian derby heartbreak leaves Botafogo's Club World Cup dream in tatters
Soccer Football - FIFA Club World Cup - Round of 16 - Palmeiras v Botafogo - Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, U.S. - June 28, 2025 Botafogo's Vitinho in action with Palmeiras' Estevao REUTERS/Susana Vera PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) -Botafogo's Club World Cup run unravelled in the cruellest way as fierce domestic rivals Palmeiras ended their campaign with a 1-0 extra-time victory on Saturday that ended the momentum building around the famous Rio de Janeiro club. Days after stunning European champions Paris St Germain, Botafogo's defensive shell cracked at precisely the wrong moment, leaving a team who had thrived as underdogs to taste bitter elimination at the hands of all-too-familiar foes. A tense, compelling clash wrote another chapter in a captivating and intense rivalry that has gripped the South American nation in recent years. Palmeiras overturned a three-goal deficit to beat Botafogo 4-3 in 2023 on the way to winning the title, and the Rio side responded by beating the Sao Paulo club twice en route to their Copa Libertadores and Brazilian league double the following year. In Philadelphia on Saturday, Palmeiras fought back to end a five-match losing streak against their rivals and halted their remarkable journey through the tournament's Group of Death, in which Atletico Madrid were knocked out. While Palmeiras surged forward with intent throughout, Botafogo's conservative approach backfired spectacularly. The team who had fearlessly taken down Champions League winners PSG suddenly looked bereft of ideas against opponents who know their every weakness. "The idea was to play in a certain way at the beginning and then change to try to surprise Palmeiras," Botafogo coach Renato Paiva said, his voice heavy with disappointment. "The match ended up being decided by an individual play." Paiva rued the chances they missed after Palmeiras, down to 10 men, sat back late in extra time, leaving their tournament journey to end in a whimper of domestic defeat. For the thousands of Botafogo supporters who had dared to dream of further glory, the elimination came with a painful sting – not falling to European royalty but to neighbours from just down the Brazilian football block. The bitter irony of conquering PSG only to stumble against Palmeiras will leave questions lingering over what might have been had Botafogo approached their countrymen with the same fearless spirit that toppled the European champions. "The work Botafogo did in the U.S. should make anyone who is truly a Botafogo fan proud," Paiva said. "In the dressing room, the players were silent and downcast, unable to accept the result. "I will forbid them from looking at the ground. They have to lift their heads and look up. The world now knows Botafogo better, and that is largely due to the work they have done in this tournament." Cunha, Jesus Score in 1st Half as Botafogo Holds on to Beat Sounders 2-1 in Club World Cup
Jair Cunha and Igor Jesus scored in the first half, and Botafogo beat the Seattle Sounders 2–1 at the Club World Cup on Sunday night. Botafogo opened the scoring 28 minutes into the game as Cunha headed in a pass from Alex Telles. It came after a contentious yellow card to Nouhou Tolo gave the visitors a direct free kick just beyond the corner of the penalty box. Sounders players felt the call was unfair, as there had been some unobserved jostling between Tolo and Artur before Tolo shoved his opponent to the ground. Botafogo doubled the lead in the first half's final minutes with another headed goal. Vitinho connected with his 24-year-old star teammate, Igor Jesus, who sent a powerful header to the bottom corner. The Sounders played better in the second half, buoyed by their energetic subs. Four minutes after coming into the match, Paul Rothrock provided the assist for Christian Roldan's header in the 75th minute that deflected off Jesus. Key Moment The Sounders had two shots on target in a row in the final 30 seconds of stoppage time to try to tie the score, but the first was well blocked by a defender before John smothered Rothrock's attempt. Takeaways Seattle will now have to try to win points off the perceived titans of Group B – Atlético Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain – to avoid going out in the group stage. Botafogo played good defense to hold onto its lead and is second in Group B on goal difference.

Al-Ittihad take advantage of Al-Hilal stumble
Al-Ittihad move up to 68 points with five games remaining. Photo: REUTERS Al-Ittihad moved six points clear at the top of the Saudi Pro League after coming from behind to beat Al-Ittifaq 3-2 as title rivals Al-Hilal were held to a 2-2 draw by Al-Shabab on Monday. Al-Ittihad bounced back from losing 2-0 to Al-Fateh in their previous match to move up to 68 points with five games remaining. Al-Ittifaq scored first after five minutes when Vitinho had a powerful shot deflected into the net, but Al-Ittihad equalised six minutes later when a low cross from Karim Benzema found Danilo Pereira who slotted it home from close range. Benzema took matters into his own hands to score their second goal 10 minutes before halftime, when he capitalised on a defensive error to go one-on-one with the keeper and score easily. Houssem Aouar made it 3-1 for Al-Ittihad just before the interval after a low cross from Moussa Diaby. Chances were limited in the second half, but the game became nervy in the closing minutes as Al-Ittifaq pulled one back after an own goal from Danilo seven minutes before fulltime. Al-Hilal had reduced the gap at the top to four points last week, but their hopes of retaining their title are now hanging by a thread. Daniel Podence opened the scoring for Al-Shabab after seven minutes with a precise shot from distance but Sergej Milinkovic-Savic equalised for the home team in the 31st minute after a clever pass from Salem Al-Dawsari to score from close range. Aleksandar Mitrovic almost put Al-Hilal ahead in the final minute of the first half, but volleyed wide of the left post. Salem made it 2-1 for Al-Hilal just after halftime, collecting a through-ball from Malcom and firing home from close range. But defender Mohammed Al-Shuwaikh levelled for Al-Shabab in the 68th minute with a powerful header from a Podence corner. Yannick Carrasco thought he had scored another goal for Al-Shabab three minutes later, but his effort was ruled out for offside. Haroun Camara missed a chance to put Al-Shabab ahead in the 82nd minute, shooting wide in a one-on-one. Al-Hilal pressed fiercely in the remaining minutes in search of a winning goal, but Mitrovic headed against the crossbar from close range and Malcom missed an opportunity in stoppage time with a weak shot.
