Xbox Just Added 50+ Classic Activision Games To Game Pass
On May 21, Xbox announced that over 50 retro Activision games were now available via a new app called Retro Classics. The new app is available only via Xbox Game Pass for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and streaming. It is available to all Game Pass subscribers, including Game Pass Core members (unless you live in Japan). Let's ignore that it should obviously have been called Xbox Retro Arcade, and instead focus on the new app.
According to Xbox, Retro Classics is powered by Antstream Arcade's streaming game tech, which is a mostly solid way to instantly play tons of old games across many different platforms. The new app supports challenges, multiplayer, multiple saves, weekly tournaments, user profiles, and leaderboards. And yes, Retro Classics has achievements. Finally, you can get a nifty Xbox achievement for playing River Raid.
'This initiative is a step in our commitment to game preservation and backwards compatibility, allowing players to experience many timeless games on modern devices,' said Xbox in a post on the company's website.
So what games are currently available on the Retro /Arcade/ Classics app? Here's some I spotted and tested: Kaboom!, Pitfall, Pitfall 2, River Raid, Grand Prix, Commando, Barnstorming, Fishing Derby, and Mech Warrior 2. Oh and Freddy Pharkas: Frontier Pharmacist is available, too. That's a game that a young Geoff Keighley helped test back in the day, long before he had a whole game award show.
According to Xbox, this is just the start. It plans on adding more Acitivison and Blizzard games to the app in the future. While I'm not a huge fan of streaming old games like this, and would prefer actual downloads and offline play, this is still better than nothing. It's nice to see Xbox finally digging into Activision's deep library of classic games and doing something with them after buying the publisher back in 2023. If Microsoft wants to own the entire game industry, the least it can do is make it easier to legally play the old stuff it gobbled up in the process.

Xbox Has a New Hollow Knight: Silksong Demo Playable at Gamescom
Long-awaited indie sequel Hollow Knight: Silksong will be publicly playable at Gamescom on Microsoft's Xbox booth, before its highly-anticipated launch, due sometime before the end of 2025. Silksong sounds like it will be one of the booth's biggest draws, alongside a first public outing for the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X — the third-party portable Xbox consoles also out later this year. The Outer Worlds 2, Xbox's biggest first-party game for the rest of this year that's not Call of Duty, meanwhile gets a "theater experience", which sounds like it'll be hands-off demo. In terms of other playable stuff, well, Obsidian's garden sequel Grounded 2 will be there, if you don't want to just play the Game Preview version at home. More excitingly, Ninja Gaiden 4 gets a first public hands-on appearance, while Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is there with an "exciting city update". Keen to play the new Indiana Jones and the Great Circle DLC? Us too, though on the Gamescom show floor Microsoft is simply showing the base game. (It's very good but, uh, we played it last year.) From non-Xbox studios, meanwhile, Microsoft has a long list of playable demos — including the likes of Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater and Borderlands 4, plus the Xbox versions of Final Fantasy 16 and Final Fantasy 7 Remake Integrade. If you're visiting Gamescom, the world's biggest video games show in terms of its public attendance, Xbox will reside in its usual home within Hall 7 of the Koelnmesse in Cologne, Germany from August 21 to 24. Alternatively, keep an eye on IGN for all of our coverage direct from the show floor. ‘Starfield' And A New Expansion Heading To PS5 In 2026, Says Report
While once upon a time, Xbox seemed determined to keep a new first party IP like Starfield to itself, since there have been massive changes to its platform philosophy, it has felt like a matter of time until it ended up on PS5. Well, that time may be coming. According to a new report from MP1st, their sources say that Starfield will be coming to PS5 in the spring of 2026, and at the same time, will release a second expansion for all platforms, along with Quality of Life updates. I would consider this more than just a random rumor, as MP1st has correctly reported on other Xbox stories ahead of the fact like the Oblivion Remastered and Persona 4 Remake reveals ahead of time. That would indicate Xbox sourcing that would in fact know something like this. Of course, nothing is a guarantee, and past that, existing plans can change. Starfield has been a strange game. It was touted as having the most players for a Bethesda launch ever, but that was of course in part due to it being on Game Pass. Its Metacritic score of an 83 was well below most other Bethesda games. Its user scores were worse, and it is sometimes viewed by fans as a game they wish Bethesda hadn't made instead of getting Elder Scrolls VI out five years sooner. Again, it seems like Bethesda should be 100% focused on Elder Scrolls or other future projects. Even as someone who liked the game more than most, its first Shattered Space expansion was quite bad, and it was a mere blip on its playercount charts, indicating that vast majority of Starfield owners didn't bother with it. So they actually made another one? I'd be shocked. Despite all this, Starfield on PS5 is almost certain to do pretty well as a AAA Bethesda game at baseline. Microsoft's controversial multiplatform release strategy has so far panned out, like this past year creating a bizarre situation where Xbox is the number one publisher of games on PlayStation. Imagine telling people that ten years ago. Even with Xbox releasing many games on PS5, this one would be one of the most significant. Back when Microsoft was arguing about Call of Duty exclusivity in court, they specifically cited Starfield as a game that would remain exclusive as a new, original IP under the Bethesda they now owned.
